Is anyone stock piling yet for coronavirus. I got a few bottles of Calpol this afternoon and some ibuprofen but wondering if I should stock kitchen cupboards. Daily Mail is getting me into a panic !!

And ive rediscovered that tuna and sweetcorn is quite tasty. Not had it for years.

ManonBlackbeak · 28/02/2020 22:33

Im genuinely not worried about it. Im usually a massive worrier, but we've been here before with Sars and Ebola and Swine Flu...I can't help but feel the media are making a mountain out of a molehill. Seasonal Flu has killed more people this winter to get things in perspective.

BlackSwan · 28/02/2020 22:36

Prepping the mumsnet way:

  • Nesti dante soap.
  • Zoflora disinfectant
  • spare moon cup
Shock

I bought extra biscuits Grin

I refuse to buy long life milk as it’s disgusting

Every single uk hospital is dealing with normal flu, I’m not sure why everyone is so hyped over Coronavirus

It's 10 times more lethal than normal flu apparently.

@Sparklingbrook , you could have started a month ago. Or done it anyway in the run up to a possible no deal Brexit last year.

NotALurker2 · 28/02/2020 22:42

Just buy what you would normally eat anyway. Otherwise you'll be left with food you don't want to eat once this blows over.

DirtyDancing · 28/02/2020 22:46

So of course everyone realises that delivery drivers may also need to self isolate. It’s not like we get to lock ourselves safely in our houses by all the driver, people working in factories and part of our supply chain have to keep working to produce loo roll and tinned peas for us. It means the whole supply chain could go down.

bellinisurge · 28/02/2020 22:47

@DirtyDancing , I get the impression people haven't twigged this. Hence the "Netflix and Chill/Sainsburys delivery" nonsense.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 28/02/2020 22:53

Why do people need to stockpile hand gel to self-isolate at home? Don't they have sinks with hot water and soap?

As for the face masks, I don't recall ever seeing these on sale in the UK but in any case they're notoriously ineffective against viruses. You'd be better off wearing gloves.

Skyejuly · 28/02/2020 22:57

Got tons of stuff. Lots of tins, big bags pasta, cereals etc and snacks.

Paracetamol
Ibuprofen
Lemsips
Vicks
Rehydration etc etc
Thermometer

Plus hygiene products
Cat food
Batteries
Matches

Etc.

I know washing hands with soap and water is the best method but I am bedridden with a chronic illness and rely heavily on hand sanitiser. I use eco hydra that claims on its website it’s effective against noro virus and coronavirus. Unfortunately it’s sold out currently.

I'm completely torn tbh, to prep or not to prep

Mummyoftwo91 · 28/02/2020 23:26

None of the doctors I work with are doing this, also what about people that can't afford to buy extras

goingoverground · 28/02/2020 23:31

No bloody hand gel anywhere all sold out

You need a high alcohol/anti viral hand sanitiser anyway. Washing your hands is just as effective if you do it properly. Hand sanitiser is useful if you can't wash your hands though. In an emergency, cologne is 90% alcohol and will work just as well I appreciate that sounds nuts but I learnt it in hostile environments training

Willow2017 · 28/02/2020 23:42

Why do people need to stockpile hand gel to self-isolate at home

Nobody has said that!
Hand gel is for when you are out and about and cant wash your hands or at work, on trains, buses etc.
I work.serving the public and they can be gross. Coughing and sneezing on things they are buying that i have to handle, licking thier fingers before handing over notes.
I am on immunosuppressants i dont want thier germs so this last couple of weeks with all the bugs going around locally just a couple of times a day i use gel.
I bought one small bottle 2 weeks ago now i cant get any more.

apricotnuts · 29/02/2020 00:46

goingoverground, some - not all - alcohol free hand sanitisers are as effective as 60% or more alcohol hand sanitisers. See my information on ecohydra hand sanitiser six comments above this. I really like ecohydra as it doesn’t dry my hands out like alcohol based hand sanitisers do.

An alcohol hand sanitiser must be 60% or above to be effective.

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 01:19

Embrace the ‘not doing it it’s all fear mongering’ brigade, of course it is hun, it’s all a big fake news virus. You just stay at home and carry on as normal, I’ll buy up all your meds and food supplies 🤗😏 Thanks!!!!

Sparklingbrook · 29/02/2020 04:06

You just stay at home and carry on as normal

I thought it was the panic brigade that were going to be staying at home. Grin Or is that once they have cleared the shelves of hand gel and pasta?

eaglejulesk · 29/02/2020 04:40

You do realise that even if you have to self isolate you can either shop online, or get someone to do the shopping for you, and leave it on your doorstep? I really don't understand all this panic buying, it's mad. Where I live we have a few necessities onhand in case of earthquakes, but that is because supplies might not be able to get through in the event of a big one which is quite different.

RosieLancs · 29/02/2020 06:07

My local chemist have several different varieties of hand sanitizer on the shelf, noticed it when picking up my prescription, didnt bother to buy any.
Feel for people who have to use food banks on situations like this, everyone is stocking for armageddon because of media hype and they are wondering where their next meal is coming from.
Be a little less hysterical and throw a few extra tins in the food bank collection.

joffreyscoffees · 29/02/2020 06:42

Our shop this week includes a lot of tins, huge bags of pasta and rice, jars of sauces and paracetamol, ibuprofen, bottles of squash etc. Good thought about Calpol though - will stock up on that.

I've had a cold all week so we bought in a lot of ant-bac gel & sprays so hopefully they'll do for now.

bellinisurge · 29/02/2020 06:44

And what about if, as has happened in Italy, areas and not just individual homes are locked down.
That isn't a "mad" scenario, so maybe you should think about that before pronouncing on how everybody is "mad".

janemaster · 29/02/2020 07:07

You can use a scarf instead of a mask, but wash it after 1 wear.
