The stock market issue is very worrying.

I think WHO is holding off using the P word as they don't want to be seen as making the markets panic more.

In all of this it's not just the physically vulnerable who will suffer most, but the economically vulnerable.

LittleSwede · 28/02/2020 07:59

Thanks for the new thread, only just realised the old one was filled up!

Joining in again. We cancelled our weekend break to Europe this morning.
I’m in the 3rd trimester and didn’t want to risk being stuck out in a quarantine situation let alone catching it at an airport that sees thousands of people each day.

Husband is flying again in a few months but hoping things are more in control by then.

It’s worrying that the stock markets are dropping as this will start to affect livelihoods of many.

The growth factor in China is dropping daily now which is really positive

My only concern is that we won’t see the same drop in rates in Europe without doing the same measures that China did
But at the moment people think that’s too extreme

PicsInRed · 28/02/2020 08:02

I read a tweet a few weeks ago that people in China were being made to euthanize their pets, I wonder if they were already aware of the crossover of infection.

Seems so.

It appears the Chinese are leaving the alarming details out. That or they're disclosing at a diplomatic level and there is media censorship in place to avoid panic - and disruption to food supply.

Frankly, this virus seems rather concerning, but moderate to severe food/services (water/gas etc) supply disruption would still result in many more deaths.

Another theory in early stages of study is that coronavirus infection could affect the testes, leading to male infertility.

I wonder what the use for the Pods popping up at Hospitals is for, I did wonder if it was to isolate affected people that had no way to self isolate at home, like in the example PP said above in a one bed flat with shared toilet and facilities or if one person is infected in a family but would find it hard to isolate from the children etc. Does anyone know what the planned use is for the pods?

Can I ask if you were going to Croatia in May you would cancel or do you think by then things will have calmed down?

@Sassenach85 maybe just start with making sure your cupboards are well stocked - enough to be able to stay inside for a couple of weeks?

maudspellbody · 28/02/2020 08:04

I feel like PHE and then government can't win this one.
It would be like Y2K. If they actually took drastic means like closing borders and schools, then the virus wouldn't spread and loads of people would say 'well that was a big fuss about nothing'

NemophilistRebel · 28/02/2020 08:05

I’d be hoping things had calmed down. 2 / 3 months could be very different

Quartz2208 · 28/02/2020 08:06

No and we could see some worse figures come out of Europe as well. China has a much lower life expectancy at 76 to Italy 86, 9% are over 65 to Italy’s 22%. It’s known to hit that age range the hardest so it’s going to look pretty bad I think

It’s right near us the rumours are it’s the next town down in Surrey

MyPartInHistory · 28/02/2020 08:08

Where abouts in Surrey Quartz?

user34254356 · 28/02/2020 08:09

agree with @newtonpass - think it's already here in some shape or form.

Since about 10 days the entire family has been down. Kids got away with a cough which is still lingering, DH was down with a bad cough and muscle aches for 2-3 days and I was poorly for 5 days with mild temperature, cough, chills and body aches. I haven't felt like this in over 15 years when I had the flu. The cough was also an odd one for me as I normally get chesty coughs but this one has been primarily dry and continues to linger. I spoke to the GP and was told it's a viral.

Potentially those rumours about them all being euthanased in China actually have substance.

@Jenasaurus It's impossible to know. Looking at China, It is possible that it will be having very low cases arising and become much lower risk in say 2 months time. (They still have a lot of active cases). So either we will get a grip in Europe or it will be a minimum of 4-6 months until people can travel again with more certainty.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/02/2020 08:11

Apparently, with enough alcohol, you can disrupt the cellular membrane of the virus and kill it. I'm happy to be told how that works or if I am wrong.

Newjez · 28/02/2020 08:12

I just ordered a new infrared thermometer. It wasn't much more than buying the ear things for our old Braun.

I'm surprised they haven't sold out.

Is anyone else watching their pension fall in value? Make your own decisions but you may be able to protect it. Gfc halved our market values, so there is probably worse to come. It hasn't hit the USA in a big way yet, but their precautions suggest it will. Plus no celebs or political figures have got it yet. There could be much more to play out here.

Newjez · 28/02/2020 08:14

@FourTeaFallOut
Is that drinking the alcohol or rubbing it on your hands?

FingonTheValiant · 28/02/2020 08:16

France Info (major radio station) confirmed this morning that 12 out of the 20 new cases are in Haute Savoie, French man who'd been to Lombardy. And was at a party with 120 people on the 15th February. Haute Savoie now considered an infection zone by the French authorities. So that's a large chunk of French ski resorts.

ifonly4 · 28/02/2020 08:17

Viva it's probably too early to predict if the festival will be stopped. Your in a lovely part of the world and many will be disappointed if it was cancelled.

Worth keeping on eye on other festivals though. I've already mentioned the Gold Cup which attracts twice the population, many from Ireland, France and Italy. The same week is the St Patrick's festival in Ireland, then London marathon. There's going to be so many more in the summer.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/02/2020 08:18

🤣 I posted my post on the wrong thread where the efficiency of hand gel is the topic at hand.

But I think a belt and braces approach should be taken and I'll have a g&t with my hand gel.

Me and DH came down with a nasty virus just after Christmas

  • horrible dry cough that lasted for weeks
  • very very high temps
  • shortness of breath
  • unable to do much at all
  • sore throats

No other symptoms of cold like runny nose etc. The cough lasted for weeks and kept us up at night.
Kids also has it at various points but they seemed to be awful for a day then absolutely fine with a slight lingering cough

Reading about the Coronavirus it sounds very similar! - like a pp it makes me wonder if actually the virus has been around a lot longer but as it wasn’t known people just been thinking they had a winter bug??

NEW: Mexico's Health Ministry says a man has tested positive for coronavirus in an initial test, but they're waiting for results from a 2nd test. If confirmed, it would be Mexico's 1st case and the 2nd in Latin America
