I agree it's probably already more widespread in the UK than we think, because most will have minor symptoms. But I also think that the vast majority of those with a temperature and cough at this time of year are just suffering from seasonal lurgy.

It's nearly spring. I think it'll die off through the summer months but the next couple of months are crucial to see how resilient the virus is.

Skittlesss · 28/02/2020 08:27

I heard on the news that schools may have to close for 2 months.

SansaSnark · 28/02/2020 08:29

Fwiw I had a virus type illness with fever and cough at the start of December, as did quite a few children where I teach (secondary school). This was well before the start of the coronavirus outbreak, so I wouldn't assume all cough and fever is coronavirus.

That said, I am a bit worried - I teach in a school near one of the schools that isolated ski trip students then reversed the decision a day later. Personally, I think isolating them was probably the right course of action - they may have shared flights/Airport space with infected people. Flights in particular are a risk for transmission of illness. By the time they show symptoms it's too late.

My school isn't currently affected, but we are being advised to check travel advice before taking children on overseas trips. I think the big concern from a school POV is not wanting to shut the school during exam season!

DramaQueef · 28/02/2020 08:29

So my DC has just told me someone in his form and one class was in Italy last week. Doesn't know what area. He has been in school 4 days and has now been told to self isolate as he has a 'cold and is sniffling'. Should I assume the school is dealing with as they should?
Or should I ring them?
My DC said they are making jokes about the corona virus so I don't know if this is kids embellishing things as they do?

Coronavirus updates: Dog tests positive for Covid-19 in Hong Kong

A Pomeranian has been diagnosed with having coronavirus after catching it from its owner in Hong Kong.

The dog is now being kept in quarantine for 14 days after rectal, oral and nasal samples came back confirming it had the disease. Owner Yvonne Chow Hau Yee took her dog to a vet in the Happy Valley area of the city.

The results showed that the dog tested weak positive to the virus and it had not shown any symptoms. Officials at the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department ordered for the dog to be kept at Hong Kong’s only quarantine facility where its condition will be monitored and it will continue to be tested.

The AFCD said in a statement that it ‘does not have evidence that pet animals can be infected with Covid-19 virus or can be a source of infection to people’. Pet owners were being reminded to get into the habit of washing their hands after touching their pets.

So sounds like there may be evidence it can jump from humans to dogs. But no evidence it can jump from dogs to humans.

But lack of evidence isn't proof it can't happen and if this is possible there will be a suspicion that the reverse is also possible.

@Sassenach85 it would be worth popping over to the preppers thread for more (it's not people digging a bunker and holing up with their supplies). That's www.mumsnet.com/Talk/preppers/3833646-prepping-for-a-pandemic-7?watched=1&msgid=94286042#94286042

But if you just want to pick up a few bits in the shop, I'd start with:

  • long life staples you use anyway. (Your normal breakfast cereal, pasta/rice plus the sauces you'd normally use, baked beans...)
  • Cold and flu type medications.
  • Loo roll.
  • Alcohol hand gel.

It always makes sense to have a few days of those in anyway, in case you get snowed in or break an ankle or something.

GorkyMcPorky · 28/02/2020 08:31

@Sassenach85, pop over to the preppers board for some guidance.

European stock markets have tumbled at the start of trading. The FTSE 100 index of the biggest UK-listed companies has hit its lowest level since December 2008.

unluckyagain · 28/02/2020 08:34

I don't see how it could be contained, if there's about to be a huge spread, which I'm not convinced there is. I'm in London and it's very busy at the moment, with lots of tourists.

In the last few days I've had face to face conversations with people who've travelled from Greece, Italy, US, Canada, New Zealand, Thailand and France. I've been on trains, tubes and buses, in busy pubs and restaurants and to the theatre. I must have come into contact with thousands of people. I'm not sick, but I don't know if any of those people are carrying the virus.

I don't know how it would be possible to contain it. People need to carry on living their daily lives. The whole country can't stay at home.

ChipotleBlessing · 28/02/2020 08:37

Given that everywhere in the world has restrictions on the number of tests they can carry out, I’m amazed a dog was randomly tested.

I’d guess it’s more likely that the ‘reinfection’ cases are because the tests aren’t particularly reliable at the minute.

Tokyo Disney Resort and Universal Studios Japan will be closed for at least 2 weeks to prevent the spread of coronavirus - NHK

cheninblanc · 28/02/2020 08:40

Is school shuts down I'm concerned for my daughters gcse exams. I work for the nhs, surely we can't all just stay home?!

GorkyMcPorky · 28/02/2020 08:41

I'm amazed that there are some posters who seem unconcerned. As a pp has said, you gave to question their awareness of what has been going on for the last couple of months if they genuinely think it won't have some sort of knock on effect. Lucky them, I suppose.

You don't have to be experiencing raving histrionics to acknowledge that things are looking increasingly uncertain. Now really is the time to make some small preparations.

And today it's reported that actually less than 5% of Wuhan's population is infected. That is a result of draconian containment measures that simply won't happen here. China will probably emerge from this less damaged than the resort of us.

GorkyMcPorky · 28/02/2020 08:42

Oh ffs. Rest of us.

I'm interested in this. The spread hasn't stopped in the sun of Tenerife and surely warm, muggy environments are a breeding ground for germs?

cologne4711 · 28/02/2020 08:46

Reading about the Coronavirus it sounds very similar! - like a pp it makes me wonder if actually the virus has been around a lot longer but as it wasn’t known people just been thinking they had a winter bug

I think so. My mum was saying lots of people in her village seemed to have flu but they'd all had the flu vaccine. So we were discussing the fact that maybe the flu vaccine wasn't very effective this season, but perhaps it was coronavirus. We'll probably never know. This was in December by the way.

cologne4711 · 28/02/2020 08:48

I'd say there's a definite risk of the Olympics being cancelled or scaled down. I feel for the athletes training, it's going to constantly be in the back of your head that the Olympics may not happen.

Tokyo marathon was/is being scaled back to elites only.

London and Boston are coming up fast - they could do the same.

Frazzled2207 · 28/02/2020 08:49

@cheninblanc
I would hope that would be absolute last resort as so many consequences as you say.
I work in schools as a self employed contractor, if schools close my business will just dry up overnight. If my kids school closes I will have to look after them which has the same effect.

Fortunately dp is main breadwinner.

LuluBellaBlue · 28/02/2020 08:49

Does anyone have thoughts re booking travel / holidays?
I was due to book a weekend away in April / May and a 2 week summer break in June to celebrate my son completing his GCSEs but something’s telling me not to - bit worried there might be cancelled flights / flight bans??
Or am I being over cautious?
Any thoughts would be appreciated- thank you
