We're supposed to be going to lake Garda in a couple of weeks , our travel agent has gone suspiciously quiet ,despite repeated emails as obviously we would rather they cancelled as not sure on insurance stance . No way we will be going as DH has heart issues. As for this morning, I'm sat on a train to London and will be squeezed on to the jubilee line wondering if I can hold my breath for 5 stops 😳

WaterSheep · 28/02/2020 07:20

Hundreds of thousands of kids expected. Surely a breeding ground for germs!

Definitely. Thousands of children, the press, police and everyone else going about their business. It only takes one infected person, and you're looking at another surge in cases.

SweetMarmalade · 28/02/2020 07:20

I wasn’t worried then I heard on Radio 4 news that patients in China who had been tested negative and were allowed to leave the hospital were then tested positive.
I’ve copied the first link I’ve come to (Daily Mail sorry)
www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8052173/amp/14-CENT-coronavirus-patients-tested-positive-SECOND-time-one-Chinese-region.html

Oblomov20 · 28/02/2020 07:21

I'm not at all concerned. My only concern,is that maybe I'm supposed to be more concerned?

maudspellbody · 28/02/2020 07:21

Jenasaurus- it's from the BBC app.

nellodee · 28/02/2020 07:24

Black humour alert: Greta is massing her troops to go out and spread the virus. What better way to reduce flights, shrink the economy and minimise carbon emissions?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 28/02/2020 07:25

Pink the advice when self isolating with one toilet is that the infected or possibly infected person should clean it thoroughly after each use with bleach or Dettol. I know how impractical and difficult that would be especially for someone who is ill but that is the advice and does make sense from an infection control standpoint

Thanks. What would happen about sharing the rest of the flat though? No spare bedroom and due to the layout there's no way of making a room an 'isolation room' as you have to walk through the living room to get from the bedroom to the kitchen and bathroom.

QueenofmyPrinces · 28/02/2020 07:25

Morning everyone - I have been following this thread since yesterday. Initially I wasn’t phased by the Corona virus but that was before it was spreading all over the world and now I’m slightly anxious.

I’m meant to be going to Turkey in 6 weeks but I’m feeling very worried about it.

userxx · 28/02/2020 07:26

@Oblomov20 Don't be. I'm not concerned either.

AvocadoOwl · 28/02/2020 07:27

@TheGirlFromStoryville upper respiratory symptoms like a runny nose and sneezing are apparently not typical early Coronavirus symptoms. If memory serves only something like 4% of those affected report a runny nose. Fever and a dry cough are the things to watch out for.

middleager · 28/02/2020 07:32

I wonder if they find that children could host it but not be affected?

I wondered this. My son was skiing in North Italy over half term and half the group got Noro. My son was OK but both DH and I have had a day this wwek where we each felt very sick.
It got me wondering if he was a carrier.

feelingchange · 28/02/2020 07:33

I'm not a worrier about things like this but last night it suddenly hit me... how would I self isolate? My husband and my mum are both on biological medications meaning they have a weakened immune system, I have literally nowhere else I could go and I have no spare money to go stay in a hotel or something. I also have 2 young children. So genuinely what do you do?

lemonjumper · 28/02/2020 07:34

Anyone who has been following the Abels and their medical treatment in Japan will know from a few videos ago that Sally was now testing negative but David was still testing positive. On the most recent video, David confirms that they are both testing positive again. He describes the test as only 'about 70% accurate'!

If that figure of 70% accuracy is correct, it surely means that two negative tests in a row as confirmation of 'recovery' is not in any way sufficient, as chance alone would allow two consecutive tests to be wrongly negative.

CeibaTree · 28/02/2020 07:35

@PinkSparklyPussyCat We only have one bathroom too, and we've just accepted that if one of us gets it we'll all be getting it - there just isn't a practical way to fully isolate a member of the family in our living set-up 🤷🏻‍♀️

Twixes · 28/02/2020 07:42

The hit to the stock market is very worrying. Biggest one day drop in history:

And thanks for the new thread.

Lweji · 28/02/2020 07:48

How can you wash your hands for 20 seconds?
i wash my hands under the running tap, it gets too hot

Wash with cold water?

Ideally, people should have taps that can be turned on and off without their hands.
Even better if they have mixer taps.
I found both difficult to find when living in the UK.

If you have someone ill at home you can indeed reduce the chances of catching anything.
Then it's the time to use masks and gloves and wash very frequently.

If you're just self isolating, you should increase hygiene levels anyway. For example by washing the taps while washing your hands and before you turn them off. Separate towels and wash them at least daily in a very hot wash. Keep to separate parts of the house and leave windows open as much as possible.

amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/02/28/health/coronavirus-us-drug-shortage/index.html?__twitter_impression=true
The US has its first novel coronavirus-related drug shortage

The United States has its first novel coronavirus-related drug shortage, according to the US Food and Drug Administration. The maker of an unnamed drug that has recently been added to the FDA Drug Shortages list told the agency that the shortage is due to the novel coronavirus.

On Tuesday, the FDA warned that these types of shortages could happen, and said it was monitoring the situation closely. The agency identified 20 drugs that either solely sourced their active pharmaceutical ingredients, or produced finished drug products, from or in China.

The unnamed company that notified the FDA about a shortage said the problem is the result of an issue with the manufacturing of an active pharmaceutical ingredient used in the drug

I don't think the situation is quite as bad in the EU for reliance on China for drugs but its still not good.

The article does not name the drug concerned.

Next week is when shortages of various things are likely to start kicking in.

It's not just drugs but drugs are perhaps the most critical. This is where indirect deaths may start to happen.

BackInTime · 28/02/2020 07:52

Thanks all for the threads.

Anyone have any statistics on rates in infection for different ages? Is it higher in older people than children for example? Just hoping that all the school trips recently returned from Italy will not be at risk or spreading this to the wider population.

Newtonpass · 28/02/2020 07:55

To be honest I think it is already here.

Three weeks ago the dc and I and were very unwell. Dry cough, a&e for temps over 40 for ds twice (they told us to take him back if the calpol/nurofen weren't controlling it after the first time).

Both doctors mentioned a viral problem. One said she had 'no idea what is going on with these viruses at the minute', and the other said there were many people coming in with a very nasty one. I ended up on steroids (asthma) and was bedridden for two weeks. Felt like flu, didn't have the slightest energy to move (even trips to the toilet were like climbing everest) and was tripping the grim fandango. Dh got away with a mild case.

Ds best friend in reception is originally from Italy, though I have no idea whether they have been back lately (better but still wiped out - so haven't been to drop off since we got sick)

Snowdropsdelight · 28/02/2020 07:55

Keep dettol or generic brands eg sainsbury or tesco (39p) by loo and pour a little in before you flush and after. Keep detergent spray also by loo and spray loo seat, handle etc.
Keep toothbrushes away.

Either don't touch door handles or use wipe when touching taps etc.

Perhaps wear A bin bag going back to the bedroom? And something over head?

Newtonpass · 28/02/2020 07:56

We are in the Midlands btw.

DominicCummingsForehead · 28/02/2020 07:56

A lot of you probably do too but I watch Peak Prosperity updates as well as Dr Campbell every day --- never been wrong this far.

Sassenach85 · 28/02/2020 07:57

Say you’re just a run of the mill mum toddling about Tesco and you pick up a few things”just in case” can anyone advise where to even start with that train of thought? I am feeling a bit helpless reading and watching it all unfold

Snowdropsdelight · 28/02/2020 07:58

Newton I agree its already here.

The Italian super spreader, its in the mail the catalogue of failings that led to his passing it on to running colleagues, pub goers, family and friends who visited him in hospital.

Glittercandle · 28/02/2020 07:58

Thanks for starting a new thread.

To the poster who mentioned pets being euthanised in China I wonder if it’s to do with a lack of food.
