Some friends are self isolating after the kids returned from Italian ski trip with symptoms. We haven’t seen them recently but it all feels a bit real now!

feesh · 28/02/2020 06:50

@VivaLeBeaver I live in the UAE and it is my understanding that Saudi have now stopped issuing ALL visas. To anyone. Full stop. I might be wrong though, so I would advise your friend to have a google and/or contact the Saudi embassy.

feesh · 28/02/2020 06:52

@SubordinateThatClause I know that bacteria multiply in warm and wet conditions, but I’m not convinced that viruses do. They are just packets of DNA that need a host to replicate.

Skyejuly · 28/02/2020 06:54

Checking in. Always value advice on these threads

Quartz2208 · 28/02/2020 06:54

That makes sense with the children. Though there must be some pretty nasty virus out there never seen so many critically ill children in A&E

Certainly more concerned more regarding quarantine implications so did a big shop prep yesterday.

MyPartInHistory · 28/02/2020 06:55

About masks - clearly, some types of mask must be effective. If they weren’t, clinical staff wouldn’t bother wearing them. However, in my view, they would only be effective if worn with eye goggles.

I believe that the advice for members of the public is as it is for two reasons. Firstly, I have no doubt that governments want to protect stock levels for those who really need them.

Secondly, they will be aware that people don’t really know how to wear them and how to dispose of them. If people think they are protected, they will place themselves in more risky situations and, as they don’t know how to deal with them and, from the photos I’ve seen, hardly ever protect their eyes, they are actually placing themselves, and potentially others, in danger.

I bought a few filtered masks and goggles via Amazon/Ebay a couple of weeks ago. I have no intention of using them unless it kicks off big time here, we are locked down, and someone needs to go out for provisions.

There is no point in me using protection on public transport as my work involves me dealing with a multitude of people I don’t know at close quarters.

To be worried about the Coronavirus Part 6

I'm in Saudi and apparently we have no cases... Yet. We're surrounded though so it's only a matter of time. We have heavy traffic with UAE, Bahrain and Kuwait, all of which have a number of cases.

Current travel advice as below:

On 27 February 2020, Saudi authorities announced measures aimed at limiting the spread of COVID-19. The measures include:

The temporary suspension of entry to the Kingdom for the purpose of Umrah and/or visiting the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. This suspension applies to British Nationals;
The temporary suspension of entry to the Kingdom of individuals with a tourist visa from China, Iran, Italy, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Philippine, Singapore, India, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Somalia and Vietnam. The current suspensions do not include the UK.
The suspension of the use of national identity cards (instead of passports) for travel to and from the Kingdom.

I'm avoiding crossing the causeway to Bahrain in case I get stuck there.

Can I ask a question about self isolation? I can see from the public health site that you should stay in one room and, if possible, use a separate bathroom. I live in a one bed, one bath maisonette with DH so there's no way we could have a separate room and we have nowhere else to go. What would we do in that case, presumably just both isolate ourselves and hope for the best?

Fiberoptic · 28/02/2020 07:02

Can I ask again on this thread as I’m confused.

If you came back from a infected area, felt ill but tested negative - does that mean your out of the woods? But what about the incubation period period? Haven’t people tested negative but retested as positive?

Thanks

DowntownAbby · 28/02/2020 07:03

A couple of weeks ago it was all Carolina Flack. That's now forgotten about.

Now it's all Coronavirus this, Coronavirus that. Zzzzzzz

What will you all start thread, after thread, after thread about next, I wonder.

Intriguing.

SistemaAddict · 28/02/2020 07:05

I'm not one to panic but I'm worried. I don't understand why more isn't being done to prevent the spread. Surely by now borders around the world should be closed? It would be economically damaging though and that's possibly why they haven't done so already. I live not too far from Buxton so it's brought it close to home as there's a confirmed case there. I have asthma and have an elderly mum. We prepped for brexit and have kept prepped as has been invaluable during previous periods of bad weather or illness. But I'm worried.

Jenasaurus · 28/02/2020 07:05

About a month ago when this virus was just appearing in the news and China was locking down towns, my colleague, a manager who sits next to me suddenly stopped coming in to the office. I was advised that he has only one functioning lung from previous illness and wasn't returning to work until the virus was over. I was surprised because this man was very logical and reasoned in his thinking and at the time there wasn't ay cases in the UK, its like he knew where this was heading. He is still not back in work and working from home, which is a credit to our employer that they have taken his health concern seriously and allowing him to do this.

As of 27 February, a total of 7,690 people have been tested in the UK, of which 7,675 were confirmed negative and 15 positive.
from gov.uk website

i am becoming less worried

Do you notice much crossover between those posting on last week's Caroline Flack threads and Coronavirus threads which were filling up all last week too @DowntownAbby?

Jenasaurus · 28/02/2020 07:10

maudspellbody I suppose that is possible, after all if it started in another species of animal, moved to humans then its quite possible that it would mutate and move on to dogs. Where is that source from please.

Pink the advice when self isolating with one toilet is that the infected or possibly infected person should clean it thoroughly after each use with bleach or Dettol. I know how impractical and difficult that would be especially for someone who is ill but that is the advice and does make sense from an infection control standpoint.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 28/02/2020 07:12

If you only have a mild case of cv how would you differentiate it from a normal cold?
I've had a sore throat, blocked nose and occasional sneezing for the last few days, as has DH. Feels like the start of a cold but never fully develops iykwim.

I'm extremely worried about it all.
Dd is at uni in London, she has the confidence of youth that nothings going to affect her and her friends.
Ds has SN.
DM is elderly and has lots of health problems.

I just feel so helpless atm.

catsandlavender · 28/02/2020 07:12

I wasn’t worried at all and now I am. After the news saying schools will shut for up to two months if it gets bad enough - I don’t think they would say that unless they thought it was a distinct possibility. I am NOT one for scaremongering but I actually wonder if I should start stocking up on essentials.

Jenasaurus · 28/02/2020 07:13

I read a tweet a few weeks ago that people in China were being made to euthanize their pets, I wonder if they were already aware of the crossover of infection.

How can you wash your hands for 20 seconds?
i wash my hands under the running tap, it gets too hot,

IceWings · 28/02/2020 07:15

How do you know if you’ve got flu or coronavirus though? Seems like the NHS is only testing people who’ve been to high risk areas. But surely you don’t need to have been abroad, you just need to have unknowingly sat next to an infected person who has been abroad.

MissPoldark · 28/02/2020 07:16

I'm worried about the Bristol school strike today that Greta will be at. Hundreds of thousands of kids expected. Surely a breeding ground for germs!
