It must be absolutely terrifying wheresmymojo. I'm so scared that our country will end up like that. The thought of my son needing care for his condition but there isn't enough staff or equipment....it doesn't bear thinking about.

EmmaBridgewater20 · 29/02/2020 00:07

Anyone know why there’s so many cases in and why it’s spread so rapidly in Italy? Just seen a map with case numbers on an Independent article and it looks like it has the highest number of cases (800+) Outside of the Asian countries and Iran.

I’m frightened now. I have an 20 month who’s looked after by my parents twice a week. My Mum’s an air hostess, I’m scared for her and for her bringing it back to my DC.

wheresmymojo · 29/02/2020 00:20

Emma your DC will most likely be the best off out of everyone.

Studies in China have shown that children don't catch it as often, and when they do they usually have a very mild case.

There's no specific reason it's spread so quickly - people entered who had the virus and didn't know and it's a very contagious virus. It's basically practically inevitable that the same will happen here (if it isn't already).

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 00:21

It’s spread so rapidly because it’s impossible to control. You could be walking around passing it to others and you may not have any symptoms yourself. Unfortunately this is our new reality, doubting eachother and being suspicious of everyone.

RedToothBrush · 29/02/2020 00:30

Telegraph: 1 in 10 could be hospitalised. Plans to use Hyde Park as a morgue
Guardian: St John Ambulance, Red Cross and Army to help in hospitals
Times: Emergency laws suspending health and safety could be brought in. Teachers to have larger class sizes to help with staff absences.

Thanks where’s @wheresmymojo

Well they said it had been circulating since early/mid Jan ......so this is interesting. DC had a really nasty virus, early/mid Jan, hideous cough, fever spiking to 40.5 for over a week (gungy eyes but not red or itchy) and when went to GP red raw throat. 2 weeks later my Dad comes down with same thing, only my Dad can articulate that it’s a dry cough and he’s not felt this ill in about 25 years....3 weeks after I come down with same thing, started with a tickly cough, followed by feeling like absolute shit (almost but not quite fluey) shivers/chilled (so just have had temp) with aching, cough progressed to the most hideous dry cough, never experienced anything like it, 28 days on and my chest and breathing still doesn’t feel right (same with my Dad). We both had the gungey eye thing too. Makes you wonder doesn’t it

ExhaustedGrinch · 29/02/2020 00:40

EmmaBridgewater20 I'm recovering from similar but I've had a runny nose and I haven't heard that as being a symptom of Cov-19 so assuming it's not that

RedToothBrush Terrifying headlines. I'm surprised more people aren't so worried about it. Many on MN seem very laid back and casual about it all.

WhiteWall1 · 29/02/2020 00:45

@ofwarren I know what you mean. It’s so scary that all those books and films about pandemics may actually come true.

I’ve been part of this thread from the beginning under a different user name and seen so many people come and ridicule us. But I’m so grateful that I’m one step ahead of everyone else. As soon as the Italy cases appeared we knew there was something up even though the press weren’t reporting it. This meant I was also able to pull my dc out of school early and I’m so happy I did

Wehttam · 29/02/2020 00:49

Many simply switch off subconsciously because the media, news, social media, word of mouth, here, all have opinions and confusing conflicting messages. It becomes impossible to process. Look at that cover of The Guardian, the top half is all about perfect cakes and the bottom is the coming Plague. The masses can not focus on the coming calamity, the message is there but they don’t see it.

Once we start seeing people being attended to by people in hazmat suits or a dead body in the street like in China then people will soon snap out of the everything will be fine spell.

EmmaBridgewater20 · 29/02/2020 00:52

@ExhaustedGrinch. We didn’t have any other cold symptoms - e.g. congestion or runny nose, sneezing, my DC did but pretty store he had 2 diff things as had the runny nose for about 4/5 days and was fine then the fever started and the cough. Me and my Dad it was just the hideous coughing and feeling like shit, I couldn’t get out of bed for a wk. That’s why it’s made me wonder. Never had anything so nasty without the snots as well. Had a chest infection but that was a horrible phlegmy cough. This was dry and barking almost!

HeIenaDove · 29/02/2020 00:58

Did anyone else see the Victoria Derbyshire show this morning.

On Channel 4 news earlier Cathy Newman said PHE had been invited on to the programme but no one was available Hmm

Newjez · 29/02/2020 02:24

@ofwarren

I'm wondering if I should try and get infected early while the NHS is in a fit state to deal with me. I'm worried they will just tell me they are full by the time it reaches me.

BrieAndChilli · 29/02/2020 02:55

@EmmaBridgewater20

We had something similar just after Xmas. Reading about the symptoms of corona virus it sounds very similar.
No snot etc, very high temp and an awful dry cough that lasted for ages and really hurt every time you moved. Kids had it too but had it for about half a day before feeling fine although cough lasted a lot longer which also fits with the whole kids don’t get corona virus as harshly!!

DominicCummingsForehead · 29/02/2020 06:04

@Potkettlexx yes there was definitely global panic over swine flu. Ultimately when it was over, with all of the estimated mild cases taken into account, the fatality rate was much lower than coranavirus' appears to be at the moment.
Although the WHOs report out of China, worryingly, indicates that there may not be a vast amount of missed, mild, or asymptomatic cases that would dilute the fatality rate in the same way.

What is the most concerning with this coronavirus is the high rate of people needing medical intervention to survive - respiratory failure, septic shock and organ failure....the NHS simply will not be able to save the vast majority of these cases if when this thing takes hold.

Newjez · 29/02/2020 06:27

The virus seems to be breaking in the USA now. From the news it seems their response has been as crappy as the UK. several cases now with no known path of infection. I can see them cutting the west coast off next week. But I'm guessing they have been too slow. I'm anticipating a lot of panic coming from the USA. I wouldn't be surprised if they start getting CV related shootings over there.

keepmoving · 29/02/2020 07:01

@emmabridgewater20

You ask why so many Italians have contracted the virus. I wonder if it is due to cultural behaviour?

Italians can be demonstrative, regular kissing on greeting etc which would enable the spread. There's also the need to educate how important it is to cover mouths when coughing (applicable here to in fairness). We know this virus in highly contagious so we have the opportunity to learn and adjust behaviour as a precaution. Some business are suggesting no hand shaking for example (and certainly no kissing!).

This I'm not sure is true... in Iran is is customary to kiss religious statues? Kissed by many who take it back to their community? And then spread by kissing, shaking hands, coughing on others....

American citizen here who was evacuated from China. Has been released from 14 day quarantine. Coughed all way through his news interview. Says he has been given a bill for his quarantine.

He has no insurance. He’s supposed to have follow up checks but has said he can’t afford them.

Oregon’s first coronavirus case has emerged. The infected person worked at an elementary school in the Portland area, which will be temporarily closed, authorities say. t.co/ykIakdx1LQ

Thisisworsethananticpated · 29/02/2020 07:41

What concerns me is the people who ignore it and pretend it’s all a big fuss

They are the ones who won’t wash their hands , wear a mask , follow sense and prevent the spread

I maybe need to stop reading about it all , as what with This , Brexit , rain , Australian fires 🔥 it’s been a ducking scary year
