My teen insisted on going to McDonalds yesterday. It was at a quiet time but I told him to not use the touch screen, to pay by card, take out rather than eat in and to use his hand gel before eating it. All sensible things to do.

The US have updated their travel advice to avoid Italy for all but essential travel. Not just Northern Italy - the whole country.

Wonder if we will follow suit...?

Thank you girls.

I’d rather be over the top cautious yet still alive and healthy, instead of being blissfully ignorant and sick.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 22:56

I'm hoping that's one of the "measures" on Monday @wheresmymojo

Darbs76 · 28/02/2020 22:56

I don’t normally panic buy or take much notice of scare mongering but I’ve got some long life milk and I’m stocking up on pasta / tea etc. We had an email in our public building today (customers come in from all over the world) say there’s people worried someone was taken to hospital and is being tested for coronavirus. If they have it that’s one huge building to close, I could be in sled quarantine for 2wks, as could they kids. This could all happen by Monday, so I don’t think it’s a bad idea to stock up a bit. I have an underlying health condition too so that does worry me a little.

Just read the post about the young Iranian women Sad

Skyejuly · 28/02/2020 22:59

What post

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 23:00

As far as I can see there is zero downside to preparing but lots of downside to failing to prepare...

So why would anyone logical choose the second option?

Oh wow Sad

HeIenaDove · 28/02/2020 23:04

DH and i are on an electric key meter.

For those saying eat healthily Anyone else see the Marmont report this week. If people on low incomes were to follow PHE advice on healthy eating, 74% of their income would go on food.

Re. self isolation Im guessing there will be less social housing tenants able to do this now........as they may have moved and downsized due to the bedroom tax.

This virus is really showing up government policies.

usernameishistory · 28/02/2020 23:04

If we were all taking drastic measures now, well, not so drastic, easily managed under the circumstances, we would be protecting our vulnerable as well as ourselves.

I don't see whats so hard here. We have a pandemic unfolding and people think basic measures are ridiculous Confused

Just stop touching stuff! Stay away from gatherings that would provide high transference opportunities for any germs.

Keeping teens to these rules though, not easy Hmm

ExhaustedGrinch · 28/02/2020 23:11

Slightly off topic but don't want to start a new coronovirus thread.

If I was to get infected and was self isolating my house would be contaminated, how would I decontaminate everything? I'm thinking things like books, clothes (unworn but possibly contaminated?) and general bits and bobs (ornaments, candles etc) - would the virus live on these things and if so then for how long? I'm worried because it seems you can catch it twice so I wouldn't want to reinfect myself.

I do have a spare room and have considered moving non essentials into that room so they won't be contaminated should I get the virus or am I being completely bonkers?

usernameishistory · 28/02/2020 23:11

I can't afford to buy pozza deliveries, I see housing tenants on benefits doing this every week! I can't afford to buy ready meals, I see that too, a lot. I also see a lot of drinking and spending vast sums on drugs, not everyone does this of course, but it blows my.mind where they get the money from when in supported housing and only getting benefits, meanwhile I take ages trying to buy all the old food that goes cheap, especially if it's fruit and basic cooking ingredients.

Also using food banks that offer fresh food. People who are incredibly low incomes don't have the same shopping patterns.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 28/02/2020 23:11

Keeping kids even harder ! I have started to
Talk to mine about it , mainly hand washing

It true , if everyone did what whetam said it would spread far less

Let’s see hey

Wehttam · 28/02/2020 23:13

The Gravity of the situation will hit home for many once they cancel the Olympics. No nation on Earth would willingly sacrifice their best athletes to compete in 1) an infected country and 2) amongst numerous potential carriers of the disease. This will soon become clear and Japan will unfortunately have to postpone or cancel them entirely.

I have accepted this as the new normal. Burying our heads in the sand will only make the shock hit harder.

usernameishistory · 28/02/2020 23:15

This is a really good point.

We don't know how long the virus can live on surfaces.

But viruses do need a medium to survive in. A dry, barren, environment, like a book cover that hasn't been used recently isn't going to provide a thriving environment for bugs.

Things regularly handled leaving greasy prints for viruses to grow in.

donbelieveit · 28/02/2020 23:16

@usernameishistory I get UC since getting basically sacked from a zero- hours contract for being sick, I wish I could afford takeaways and drugs. Probably you see people being irresponsible then having no money for two weeks out a month.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 23:16

exhaustedgrinch the virus only lasts 9 days on surfaces

usernameishistory · 28/02/2020 23:17

Where's your source here ofwarren please?

LarkDescending · 28/02/2020 23:18

NHS: How long do bacteria and viruses live outside the body?

It doesn’t specifically cover this virus, obviously.

usernameishistory · 28/02/2020 23:19

Thanks. Yeah, that was my wonder, that we don't know this virus and whether it behaves differently.

JellyfishandShells · 28/02/2020 23:20

Re. self isolation Im guessing there will be less social housing tenants able to do this now........as they may have moved and downsized due to the bedroom tax.
This virus is really showing up government policies

Huh ? Self isolation is about not leaving your accommodation and going out into public places, not everyone in it being able to have their own wing of the mansion.

LarkDescending · 28/02/2020 23:20

Northern California now has another case which is not traceable to a travel history or a known cluster. The Washington Post infers that a community outbreak in (at least) California is underway.
