My eldest was already aware of Corona - she hears everything
She acted daft when I joked (unwisely) that she may have Corona virus. She then proceeded to tell me loads about it.

We have started talking about it more now and making our youngest aware. Especially with hand washing.

We do not want to scare them but they also need to understand it so if something happens then it's not a total shock.

Monaco reports first case of coronavirus t.co/eUoE2b20hL

@DonkeyKong2019 all Dutch primary schools do nit checks by parent volunteers after every school holiday. Lots of close contact breathing onto the kids in that school.

www.livescience.com/how-long-coronavirus-last-surfaces.html
Link explaining that coronaviruses last up to 9 days on surfaces

HeIenaDove · 28/02/2020 23:24

Huh ? Self isolation is about not leaving your accommodation and going out into public places, not everyone in it being able to have their own wing of the mansion

Its the advice given out by the PHE To isolate in a seperate room if possible and they also mentioned a seperate bathroom

a. do try to keep up

b. dont shoot the messenger.

Rosspoldarkssaddle · 28/02/2020 23:24

May have missed previous thoughts on this but....
You have a boat full of people who have been mixing together.
Some get sick and are removed.
Rest are left. They are not 100% isolated. They still mix in the food areas so after two weeks pass, more pick it up, the 2 weeks start again and so on. Same with the hotel in tenerife.
Take them out. Give them masks, gowns, gloves and transport them back to their home country where they go into proper quarantine for two weeks, are tested, monitored, fed and watered in strict conditions.
Keeping them in the hotel and aboard is just making the situation worse. Their mental health must be affected as well.
Surely there is no more threat from this than flying the others back from affected countries and taking them to MK and the Wirral?

usernameishistory · 28/02/2020 23:25

That s a useful link, and seems to say that the potency of a virus reduces drastically the longer its away from a body, and dies on the hands within the hour mostly. Last poorly on porous surfaces like tissues, but longer on water resistant surfaces like stainless steel.

Having said that can last for longer than 7 days, but it talks mainly in terms of hours, apart from the likes of mrsa which can linger for weeks Confused

usernameishistory · 28/02/2020 23:26

The ones in the hotel were told to stay in their rooms, the same with the cruise ship.

Poppytime · 28/02/2020 23:27

My DD(6) has come back from school today having being taught how to wash hands properly (20-30 seconds, back and front, thumbs etc!), was good to see the school being proactive, even it's a bit late

Poppytime · 28/02/2020 23:28

Not that I didn't tell her to wash her hands properly!

LarkDescending · 28/02/2020 23:34

This (from the Guardian) is what Boris Johnson said today about the deceased British Diamond Princess passenger and why he had been left in Japan:

We very much regret the loss of life of the individual concerned but we think the best thing to do is not move people around too much in the current situation, not to repatriate unless you can be absolutely sure that there isn’t going to be a spread and a contagion to this country.

This may provide some insight into the Tenerife situation.

LarkDescending · 28/02/2020 23:35

...though obviously the Tenerife people haven’t been diagnosed with the virus so it is a significantly different situation.

Potkettlexx · 28/02/2020 23:36

@DominicCummingsForehead

Wasn’t it like this at the beginning of it all though? I just remember hearing about all the deaths and looking at my beautiful baby fearing the worst.

I can’t remember ins and outs of figures but I remember the feelings associated with all the news coverage etc and I’m sure at the beginning there seemed to be high death rates.

I’m just hoping much the same will come of this but I fear I’m wrong 😩

ExhaustedGrinch · 28/02/2020 23:40

Thanks for the links about how long it lasts on surfaces. I'm thinking of boxing some things up and putting into storage so that if I do have to decontaminate things it will be easier and I will feel less stressed. I feel like if it can last up to 9 days then it's possible it could reinfect if I've not cleaned thoroughly enough.

Random18 · 28/02/2020 23:47

I don't understand why they didn't bring them home earlier from the diamond princess. They brought Brits home from Wuhan.

On the whole the Brits on the Diamond princess were UK residents who were on holiday (although I don't think this was the case for the poor man who died).

Why bring people home from Wuhan but leave the holidaymakers in situ.

I wonder if this means death is as a result of the quarantine. It seems likely he was infected during this time.

Hearing one of the guests at Tenerife hotel was interesting this morning. She was self isolating her and her family. And had not left her room. It's obvious many others aren't. She has said she does not want to share a plane with the ones flaunting the quarantine and really you can't blame her.

I can see that one rearing its ugly head soon.

I do think the British govt should bring people risk home (that was not my original view)

At least then we can ensure they are properly quarantined and reduce the risk.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 23:50

If anybody would have told me 2 months ago that I would have my son home educated, have bought enough food and medicine for 3 weeks and that I would be self isolating because there was a pandemic, I would think it was really far fetched.
It's actually really crazy when you try and rationalise it. I can't actually get my head round what is happening.
It sounds like something out of a film.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 23:52

Do you know how she is getting her food random? I heard they had to go to the all inclusive buffet!

wheresmymojo · 28/02/2020 23:52

I can't imagine what it's like to be somewhere like Iran right now.

Imagine knowing that it's running rampant and that the health services are already overwhelmed and unable to cope.

Imagine being frontline health staff knowing you don't have enough PPE and having heard the news about health worker deaths from China Sad

Random18 · 28/02/2020 23:52

If a DC got it was a parent be able to be with them even if they were not infected?

That worries me (possibly silly) but I would want to be with them to give them a cuddle whenever they needed it (and not with protective clothing)

JellyfishandShells · 28/02/2020 23:53

*Its the advice given out by the PHE To isolate in a seperate room if possible and they also mentioned a seperate bathroom

a. do try to keep up

b. dont shoot the messenger*

And how many people not in social housing have separate rooms available and separate bathrooms available for every person ?

It’s not you vs everyone else enjoying plenty of space. Back in the real world......

Random18 · 28/02/2020 23:53

*ofwarren I don't. She was on BbC this morning I think.

I got the impression they were not leaving their rooms

Rosspoldarkssaddle · 28/02/2020 23:54

If you listen to the reports coming from the boat and the hotel, there are places in them that people still gather. At the hotel, the restaurant area is still self serve. On the boat, they are walking about on shifts to get fresh air. What air is being breathed in the inner cabins? How many cough and then put their hands on the bannister and rails? It may not be airborne but it will still settle on surfaces in droplet form.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 23:55

I don't know what they would do in this country random as we haven't had any children catch it here yet.
There were videos in china of children behind perspex, being cared for by people in hazmat suits ☹️

donbelieveit · 28/02/2020 23:55

@ofwarren it seems crazy because the epidemic hasn't happened yet in UK. In a few weeks time it may look more rational. The government want schools open as much as possible/ exposure at the moment
