@SansaSnark the fatality rate may be lower than SARS or MERS, but it is far more contagious, and has already killed more than SARS or MERS combined, twice over.

It is far more contagious.

DonkeyKong2019 · 28/02/2020 22:23

"Confirmed: Govt's expected to publish emergency legislation next week in response to the #Coronavirus outbreak

Whitehall source says a package of measures is planned to help the public sector - such as the NHS and schools - to respond more 'flexibly'"

Source is @MarkerJParker

jimmychooing · 28/02/2020 22:26

It's very interesting data. 50% mild/asymptomatic and 7% CFR don't usually go hand in hand

Givemeabreakpls · 28/02/2020 22:28

I wonder what the ‘package of measures’ entails. And why do we have to wait until next week for an announcement? I realise some things take time but we are running out of it.

Quartz2208 · 28/02/2020 22:29

its really hard to gauge though on stats alone - Wuhan stats are different to everywhere else (a point I think highlighted by the fact that the virus has changed since then I am sure it was different in Italy and that might be a good thing).

Africa/Iran etc are bound to be markedly different from somewhere like Singapore.

And SPanish Flu for example they still dont know what the actual death rate was because it is hard to get all the data in.

ChipotleBlessing · 28/02/2020 22:33

I guess that Dutch case is going to be a good study for whether children catch and transmit the infection asymptomatically. She was in her kids’ school doing lice checks on loads of kids the day before she was diagnosed.

Snowdropdelight · 28/02/2020 22:33

Gov allowing flexibility sounds good to me.
No blanket polices but hopefully ability to open and close as necessary?

Potkettlexx · 28/02/2020 22:34

@Sakura7

**The people claiming it's no different to flu and only dangerous to a subset of people (as if that's ok) are just lazily assuming this virus is comparable to swine flu. It's not. Go do a bit of reading and stop posting ignorant nonsense.

Panicking isn't a good idea but neither is being complacent. People should inform themselves and take reasonable precautions**

I remember when swine flu was all over the news about 9/10 years ago and from what I can remember if was pretty much similar coverage of how bad it is etc... I remember crying as my lo was only a baby and I used to get so anxious watching the news.

Thankfully it died of death after a few months. Hoping this is the same

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 28/02/2020 22:34

Yes we will never fully know how many people are actually infected due to many not showing symptoms or not getting tested. The only way to know for sure would be to test every member in the population but that is logistically impossible. But it definitely seems higher then the 2% currently being mentioned due to the number still under going treatment.

mrshoho · 28/02/2020 22:36

Quartz, researchers put the estimated cases at 18000 in Iran. They are way behind China in efforts to contain.

Snowdropdelight · 28/02/2020 22:36

Pot mine was about 2 years with 7 swine.

Only dh worked and in a non traveling office.
Our exposure was very low and we had tamiflu

The contagion wasn't as bad as this

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 22:37

Israeli passenger of the Diamond Princess cruise ship who was presumed to have recovered and released from quarantine has tested positive after returning home - Ynet/JP

Wehttam · 28/02/2020 22:39

How to prepare?

Stock up. Not just in the event of confinement but to minimise trips to the supermarkets over the coming weeks/ months. Check the dates on items to make sure you have a long enough window of opportunity to use them up in the hopeful event things do not deteriorate.

Start taking decent dose of Vitamin C.

Minimise risk of transmission by avoiding touching strangers.

Avoid the sick. Be aware of your surroundings, if you hear coughing move away, if you see sneezing step back.

Teach the kids to wash their hands with warm water for at least 30 seconds.

No touching surfaces outside your home without sanitising hands immediately after.

Do not touch your face or eyes when outside.

Lay off the Costas, Starbucks and McDonald’s, these types of places are crawling with germs and disease even at the best of times, NOW they may be hives of pathogens that could potentially be lethal. Absolutely do not use their cutlery, mugs or plates if you insist going to these places. Remember, many careless ignorant people will not care about YOUR health.

Drink plenty of water, encourage the family to do the same.

LarkDescending · 28/02/2020 22:40

Helen Whately, health minister currently on Newsnight, has clearly been told to say We Are Well Prepared every 5 seconds.

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 22:42

#USA- 2nd #coronavirus case of unknown origin confirmed in #California, indicating virus is spreading in the state

ginandnappies · 28/02/2020 22:44

@Wehttam just stop. You're spreading fear when you have no idea.

DonkeyKong2019 · 28/02/2020 22:48

Completely off topic with the Dutch case but I thought they don't do nit checks in school because they aren't allowed?

DonkeyKong2019 · 28/02/2020 22:48

And I've also never seen plates or cutlery at mcdonalds

Wehttam · 28/02/2020 22:48

Pour another ginandnappies isn’t there a nightmare MIL thread you could read?

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 22:48

I don't think @Wehttam is being overdramatic. I already do all those things.
Someone asked her how to prepare and she answered.
It's all the stuff we are discussing on the preppers board.

DominicCummingsForehead · 28/02/2020 22:48

@Potkettlexx the fatality rate of swine flu was very low

usernameishistory · 28/02/2020 22:50

I think they're all reasonable steps to take to avoid germ spread, and won't go amiss with the volume and virulence of current bugs doing the rounds for the nhs to deal with, let alone cv.

If people take proper bloody preventative steps now it will benefit and protect the particularly vulnerable and free hospital spaces/staff for the inevitable cv complicated cases

ofwarren · 28/02/2020 22:50

There are cutlery, mugs and plates in Costa and Starbucks. I don't see why the post is being criticised.

I have no idea how to post twitter links so I hope people can read this , but it has some interesting info about reinfection - seems it often isn't reinfection , but the virus is still being detected . The tweet is from a microbiologist in the US

Quartz2208 · 28/02/2020 22:51

I think the difference is scientists have never been able to get a handle on coronaviruses in the same way they can influenza and that is the issue.

You introduce flu and coronavirus to a amazon tribe who has never met either it would be interesting to see if there was a marked difference between the responses. But they could also be killed by a common cold.

We are used to the flu, we know how it works and what it means to have it.

The hope is that for a lot of us is feels like the flu but in practice we dont know how many that will be, what the mortality rate/reinfection rate or longer term effects of it will be
