Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

The Irish team behaved with great restraint playing against Israel. There is hardly a family in Ireland who weren't oppressed by a coloniser so many Irish can identify strongly with the plight of the Palestinian people. There is great support for Palestinians throughout Ireland.

The behaviour of the Israeli squad and press was appalling throughout. At the first press conference both Israeli journalists were outrageous. Not one question about football or the game itself. At the second press conference their behaviour was heading in the same direction but they were cut short and the Irish representatives, quite rightly, walked out,.
During the first match Adam Idah was abused by the small Israeli contingent present who directed monkey chants towards him. In addition those same supporters were shouting IDF at various points throughout the game. At half time during the second match one of the Irish backroom staff was spat at by an Israeli player. This incident was confirmed by Serb security staff. There were various other incidents which hopefully will be dealt with in time.

The comparison with cricket is laughable. Most people in Ireland know SFA about cricket and certainly most wouldn't know or care about any Ireland cricket team. They certainly wouldn't know when or who they were playing. It is not England.
Same goes for basketball. It is a very niche sport but if people want to protest, good on them.
Which bring me to UEFA = Union of European Football Associations
Where in Europe is Israel????
Time this nonsense was dealt with. Israel is NOT in Europe.

I absolutely agree. Israel were let play with Europe as a charity type gesture because no one else wanted to play against them. They repay that kindness by spitting on people and racially abusing them. It's disgraceful.

Their players, their fans and their press all behaved appallingly and there has no been no sign of an apology from them.

Lets face it, who would have thought that a country of Catholics (even if not practicing today, it's ingrained through generations) would be full of Jew haters?

Let's call a spade, a spade.

I have found it very interesting that a lot of the openly vocal antisemitic (parading as 'antizionist') celebrities in the US have Irish or Catholic backgrounds such as Mark Ruffalo, Susan Sarandon, Javier Bardem, Macklemore, John Cusack, Billie Eilish.

It's sick brainwashing that's been around for centuries.

You haven’t a clue if that’s what you think. Really.

The Irish may well have behaved well and the Israeli team disgracefully ( I haven’t really followed those reports)

I can’t agree that “The comparison with cricket is laughable. ”
Cricket might be a niche sport in Ireland but I’m sure the word would have got out if they’d been playing cricket against Israel.

I don’t think that’s fair at all.
Im a practicing Catholic of Irish descent . I’ve NEVER heard antisemitism from my Irish family or Catholic friends.

Who would have thought that the descendants of Holocaust survivers would commit genocide? The IDF and the Israeli state spits on their memories. History looks back and say how did the people stand back while the Nazis were committing the Holocaust . They will do the same for the current genocide whi ch is live streamed. NiE WIEDER was never again for everyone.

OpheliaWasntMad · 05/10/2026 19:05

I don’t live in Ireland. I do think some people in Ireland are very binary in their thinking about Israel and Palestine .

This is a horrible post. People should not use the Holocaust or the Nazi analogy to cast shade and insult on Israel. It’s deeply offensive

You see that's the kind of disgusting Holocaust inversion Jew haters just lap up.

Are you Irish too?

I am too btw.

Raised atheist though so never had an ingrained hatred of Jews unlike the majority of my countrymen, funnily enough.

Yes It’s a disgusting post.

No I don’t think the majority of Ireland have “an ingrained hatred of Jews” .

The Catholic Church has many shameful things in its past - including antisemitism. Things have changed ( unless you are talking about the lunatic fringes of religion)

ColadhSamh · 05/10/2026 19:15

The bigoted, racist, xenophobic rant from @OpenScroller shows a bitterness and hatred that many will recognise and identify with. Hope it remains.

Using the Guardian, an English newspaper to highlight a point about Ireland. has a certain irony to it.

But they are not...they are defending the only Jewish state in the world from terrorists in 4 fronts. Never again is now....look how easily these Islamist terrorists have managed to turn the western " left' and students and campuses.. this was planned before October 7th and people have fell for it.

Yes Im Irish and no I am not a person who hates Jewish people. Never have and i never will be. Theres a conplete difference between calling out the actions of a genocidal state and blaming all Jewish people. Dont conflate. Ps if you are really Irish (and i doubt it) they you will know about colonial history. Ps no Irish people who i have ever met has used the term "Jew hater" its not on our vocabulary or hpw.we speak. Do better.

I’m an Irish Catholic (well culturally at least, not v religious) and I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about in today’s Ireland. There is no ingrained hatred of Jews among the people I know and never was as I grew up (70s and 80s rural Ireland). People are just making stuff up at this stage.
ETA There are always a few oddballs but they’re not representative.

Delightful irony in you calling an Irish person a bigot and a racist I have to say.

I don't hate my country of birth, I have no issue with stating facts though.

I didn't use the Guardian btw. Wouldn't wipe my arse with it.

I’m wondering because I genuinely don’t recognise the Ireland you’re portraying.

Yikes my typing was attrocious.

Off course i dont have any problem calling out horrendous attacks, the people kidnappef and called on 07.10 were real people ( not just statistics) with hopes and dreams. Just like the Palestinian people who have been systematically genocided.

I have no problem calling out wrong .

Fair enough, please accept my humblest apologies 💐

As I said I prefer to call a spade a spade. Antisemitism is just a more polite word for Jew hate.

I left Ireland (Donegal area) in the 70s when I was 9. Never had a wish to return although used to be proud of my Irish roots until the last few years.

I never supported the IRA either, sorry to disappoint, and consider the conflation a convenient excuse to support Hamas.

Neverblackcurrant · 05/10/2026 20:14

Sorry to disappoint?!
What does that mean?

The vast majority of Irish people don’t support the IRA!!
Or Hamas!!
Your ideas about Ireland are seriously warped.

I think you'll find that Ireland has changed a lot since the 70s, that is half a century ago. A lot of us weren't even born when you left so judging us by 1970s Donegal isn't really fair.

Or, some Irish have long identified with oppression except in Yemen, Sudan, Syria etc etc. Just the ones where those retaliating are Jews. There's a name for that y'know.

I'm, sadly more and more inclined to think it's to do with hatred towards Jews than the plight of innocent Palestinians.
If these people really cared about the victims of war, it would not just be Israel they would be vocal about.

Neverblackcurrant · 05/10/2026 20:32

Were your parents Catholic @OpenScroller?
I have to wonder if the anti-Catholic bigotry you’re displaying has a different root 🤔
(Apologies if I’m on the wrong track, but there are many in Ulster who are prejudiced against Catholics as you know, so I just wondered.)

Again, it is everything to do with the plight of innocent Palestinians and nothing to do with hating Jews. It you think otherwise you are simply wrong.
