Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

Just pathetic. Still Ireland never seem to get very far so at least we aren't subjected to their crap very often.

Spitting is acceptable though, right?

OpheliaWasntMad · 05/10/2026 09:21

Ireland cricket team had no problem playing against Afghanistan. No concerns about the gender apartheid… no protests … not a word

Israeli fans making racost monkey noises at a black Irish player, Israeli fans chanting IDF while insisting that football isn't political, Israeli reporters acting so disgracefully they are banned from the media call, Israeli players being such sore losers that they resort to my dad is bigger than your dad style insults but Ireland wearing armbands to remember the dead is the thing that you pick up on, sounds about right.

OpheliaWasntMad · 05/10/2026 09:33

It isn’t fair to blame the football team. They came under enormous pressure to completely cancel the game.
They black armbands etc was an attempt to deflect some of the criticism they faced for playing against Israel.
There was no public protest or pressure when Ireland played cricket against Afghanistan. Oppression of women doesn’t matter. The hypocrisy is real.

Cricket is a very, very niche sport in Ireland compared to soccer. It’s likely that had an impact on public awareness. I’m Irish and hadn’t heard about the cricket, though I’m not sporty in the least I admit. Soccer, GAA and rugby are everywhere, can’t escape them (unfortunately imho).

I don't see your point, unless you mean it's ok for Ireland to play against racists etc as long as not too many people will watch that sport?
Surely it's either wrong or it's not?
Plus in parts of Dublin, especially the wealthy ones, cricket is quite a big thing: I went to university with people who played it all the time. It's a private school thing I gather.

I agree it’s a very niche sport in Ireland … but if Israel played cricket I think people in Ireland would be clamouring to stop the match .

I was referring to PP’s comment that there was no public protest around playing Afghanistan in cricket. I personally (for example) hadn’t heard of the controversy so had no opportunity to protest. I had heard about the soccer. So there’s possibly a difference in public awareness of the issues because of a difference in the popularity of the sports. That was my point.

I’m not in Dublin and my kids don’t attend private schools, so maybe that does make a difference. There are no facilities at all for cricket where I live. I think it’s fair to say that, overall, it’s a minor sport in Ireland.

Nofeckingway · 05/10/2026 11:26

@Gloriia They trashed Israel 3 -0. Many don't want to participate in engaging with a country that is committing genocide. Ireland is not alone in this but has never changed it's position.

Maybe, though apparently there was a big Irish/Israeli women’s basketball match a few months ago that I also heard nothing about, so there can’t have been too much clamouring about that. Reading up on it now there was some tension, but it certainly wasn't ‘news’ in the same way the football was.

MissyB1 · 05/10/2026 11:27

The Irish have long identified with the oppression suffered by Palestinians, because of the of colonialist settler parallel. This obviously goes back long long before October 7th.

The music festival was “unfortunate”.
🙄
Talk about trying to minimise the role played by Hamas.
Some of the posts on here are unbelievable

Honestly some of the posts on here absolutely make the case that Hamas’ lies have been swallowed completely.
”. Also it was committed by a terrorist group, not the Palestinian people who are completely innocent unlike the Israeli people. (Most men have been in the idf) “
Do people understand that Hamas is made up of Palestinians ( just as the IDF is made up of Israelis)
Not all Palestinians are completely innocent @Eire12 . The ones who beat and jeered at the hostages , the ones who participated in Oct 7 are not innocent.

Don’t believe Hamas propaganda.

Oh please.

3% of the population killed in a conflict is <to use your terminology> unfortunate. It isn't genocide.

As explained by a PP, basketball is really not a big sport in Ireland. I have family who play basketball and we attend club and international games. An international basketball game might attract a crowd of about 1000 in the national basketball arena, but often much less than that. It wasn’t into the news as it is nowhere near the scale of the soccer team in terms of popularity and awareness of games, especially when we talk about the women’s national basketball team. So not many people were not even aware of the recent Israeli game in order to protest against it. But there was indeed tension around playing Israel and pressure on the team and coaching staff to somehow manage that.

OpheliaWasntMad · 05/10/2026 11:46

@Eire12
There are plenty of people who know what it’s like to be oppressed and starved and victims of a genocide.
The Jewish for example don’t have to go back as far as the Irish Famine ( 180 years ago)
Neither do the Tutsis , Armenians and many many other groups .
The Irish connection is more likely to be the links between the terrorist groups in the 70’s

Or, some Irish have long identified with oppression except in Yemen, Sudan, Syria etc etc. Just the ones where those retaliating are Jews. There's a name for that y'know.

I'm Irish too, and this is pretty much exactly what I was about to write. Unfortunate??? You really should be ashamed of saying that @Eire12

That’s not true, but don’t let a minor thing like that stop you!
Most of us aren’t like pp.
There are stupid people and racist people everywhere unfortunately and we have our fair share.

Many, many countries have awful history of opression and poverty and starvation. Many countries seem to look to the future and better. Some countries hang onto the past whether it be 600 years ago, 200 or 80 never quite make a plan to improve their own lot but rather keep looking back in anger and blame and everything is always someone elses fault.

Some of the Irish are perpetual victims just like the Palestinian people have been made to be. The 2 state solution was suggested years ago and declined. Is it better to live with a permanent requirement to need aid - in the billions of dollars. There was another way. Keep chosing aid, keep chosing terrorist organisation to lead and will it ever get better.

OpheliaWasntMad · 05/10/2026 11:53

Thank you! I know most Irish people would be appalled.
