Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

I think it’s double defensiveness on the parts of us (Irish) and UK posters. Married to an Englishman for 35’years and it doesnt take much for us go back to our corners on Geopolitical issues! That and the six nations are the usual flashpoints. We try to avoid discussing both.

Imagine being this petty on a thread about world events and major losses of life.

I’m not surprised that’s what you thought, your reading comprehension is weak.

😂

Somebody googling for oneupmanship on a thread about serious world events, I imagine. Perhaps the mention of losses in my family inspired them to check the scores.

ColadhSamh · Yesterday 20:18

Mamó and I were watching. Tommy Lonergan with 2 and Conor McManus with 1. Maith na buachaillí.
We were kept busy and engaged between the match and this thread.
@Gloriia Mamó is one of those who would even watch. She wouldn't miss a match. Loves her Gaelic football and at her age (she won't be happy when I read that back to her 😂 ) can still puc a sliotar.

120m culminative throughout the whole tournament not the final. Which England won you'll be pleased to know Grin

This thread is a litany of anti Irish sentiments from page one, don’t pretend it’s about world events. The disparaging remarks are peppered throughout the thread, ‘you Irish’ ‘’perpetual victims’ performative (the entire nation), “the rest of the world LOVES them (apparently)”- true- and “I'm starting to really, really dislike Ireland and the Irish. Really, really intensely dislike them.” and on and on for pages…I only went through 5 pages.

I am also Irish and do not recognise the Ireland some of these posts are referencing. I have never once heard anyone being antisemitic in Ireland. I don't know of anyone who would look at what happened on October 7th and think "great" or anything of the sort.
I know plenty of people who will rightfully stand up against the slaughter of innocent people and that goes for October 7th just as it goes for the atrocities going on ever since in Gaza.
There are people on Mumsnet who seem to believe that the "antisemitism" stamp can give them free rule to block free speech and to stand up for what is right. I am happy that Ireland as a nation has the balls to be counted. It is absolutely nothing to do with hating anyone. It's standing up for humanity.

How many Jewish people do you know? My friend walked through Dublin looking visibly Jewish a few weeks ago, and got called a baby killer or similar several times on that one walk. Just because he looks Jewish. (He is not Israeli, for those who say the Irish are anti Israel, not anti semitic - which I do genuinely believe to be the case for some Irish)

I have lived in Ireland for longer than I have lived anywhere else. I love Ireland. I think there should be a United Ireland. I love Irish people. But the last three years have been increasingly difficult for Irish Jews.

Fortunately there have been very few violent incidents here, but Jewish people are scared. Jews are deeply traumatised people. I grew up with Holocaust survivors, so its not history to me. Its real life. There are indeed people out there who want to kill me, because I am Jewish, just like they killed my great grandmother and other relatives. October 7th just cemented the fears we all have. The stories we grew up with - like my neighbour who watched her children being murdered during the holocaust - that happened to people we know, or friends of friends, 3 years ago on Simchat Torah. Events such as Bondi or Heaton Park remind us that we are not safe wherever we are, that it doesn't matter what our political views are, just us being Jewish and attending a synagogue service or Chanukah party makes us deserving of death, even if we are 10 years old. Every Jewish event needs security or people are just too scared to attend.

I used to not be scared, but now I am. I don't know if some crazy Irish person will wake up one morning and decide i am the perfect target. I hate the way my Jewish friends are made to feel in this beautiful island with so many wonderful people.

I don't know why Irish people are the way they are. Terrorist connections from the 70s? inherited trauma from the famine? (so why did Ireland do so very little to help holocaust victims/refugees?) Maybe its simply that most Irish people have never met a Jewish person.

Thank you for your input and I hope it isn’t hand waved away in the way a lot of discussion of antisemitism in Ireland has been on here.

I just wanted to say, he said. Ireland, they say, has the honour of being the only country which never persecuted the jews. Do you know that? No. And do you know why? [-] Because she never let them in, Mr Deasy said solemnly.[-] She never let them in, he cried again through his laughter … that’s why.’

Why are you quoting this in support of your argument? This character is from Ulysses and in the book he is a pompous prejudiced character, a unionist who believes Ireland should belong to Britain.

I am under no illusion that there isn't antisemitism in Ireland and Jews are more at risk of abuse now. I'm sorry about the verbal abuse your friend was subjected to.
Can I ask what you mean by this

You live Ireland, love it, admit there are very few incidents here, and your take on the country and people you love is this ? “don't know why Irish people are the way they are. Terrorist connections from the 70s? inherited trauma from the famine? (so why did Ireland do so very little to help holocaust victims/refugees?) Maybe its simply that most Irish people have never met a Jewish person”
This is slanderous, and displays zero knowledge of our history. I’m done. It’s not worth it.
