Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

I bet a single Irish poster won’t say ‘yep, bad move; we absolutely should not have been playing Afghanistan’ because their national pride comes before anything.

I think you'll find we all said that they shouldn't have played it but most of us knew nothing about it at the time. It was played in August in Belfast and information on it has only surfaced this week, no idea why 🤔
I'm sure you also disagreed with the England cricket team playing Afghanistan last year?

Tbf a couple of Irish posters did earlier in the thread but the threads been dominated by more extreme views since then.

Pretty inflammatory statement, could you point out the extreme views you speak of

Ffs saying a nation has an antisemitism problem isn’t a ‘stick to beat them with’. You need to avoid this ‘poor me’ language when discussing the much-worse fate of others.

100% posters talking about a cricket match here - the same one the English team played - are doing so disingenuously. Antisemitism in England is a significant and increasingly serious issue. But I’m not here using broad strokes to insinuate that all English people are antisemitic but pp are implying this about the Irish; some have said that they only reason Ireland and her people support the Palestinians is because we’re all “rampant Jew haters”. That simply isn’t true but you and others refuse to accept that people have their own reasons for supporting Palestinians. It’s not due to antisemitism no matter how much pp try to spin it. I don’t deny that there antisemites in Ireland - I’m sure there are. But it is not the reason Irish people generally support the Palestinian right to self determination.

But the team didn’t refuse to play them. That’s the bottom line. Lots of British people opposed the UK refusing to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest. But what counts is what action actually taken.

And the Irish football team didn’t refuse to play Israel - they played them… twice… what’s your point?

I don't judge people by their nationality I judge them by the hate they spout.

One poster condemned the comments from that horrible irish man about Hitler and bullets in heads so we can but hope there's more who accept that language is not ok

Nah - it buying it. Based on posts you’ve made on this thread … but like I say, we’ll survive.
anyone making comments about hitler or bullets in heads is a disgusting p.o.s. I haven’t seen anyone on this thread defend that kind of behaviour…

Yes I was confused by that. Do they not know the game was played? which is what the protests were about. It's not a difficult concept our sporting bodies have autonomy on their decisions on this and people have the right to protest if they disagree. Maybe people aren't used to seeing a functioning democracy in action

Oh God I’m done. If EVERY SINGLE suggestion that Ireland has an antisemitism problem is met with ‘You’re anti Irish! What about England! What about Germany! What about Islamophobia! What about…’ then there is no hope for you and you are nowhere near as moral and self righteous as you think you are.

Ireland considers itself immune to bigotry because ‘the past’ and ‘everyone likes us’ and ‘always on the right side of history’. You won’t realise what’s happened until it’s happened; and by then your reputation will be long gone I’m afraid.

So you’re standing by your assertion that the only reason many Irish support Palestine is because they’re rampant antisemites? You’ve some gall lecturing others given your own narrow minded outlook and xenophobia. Best of luck to you.

It has been said that Ireland has an antisemitism problem what is not accepted is that it is any worse than any other country including the UK. If you have information to suggest otherwise share it, you haven't as yet. What you have done is make derogatory personal attacks on posters. No one can engage properly or seriously with that kind of style of posting

How is that nasty? Come on!!
I posted flowers in support for the trauma of the anti Irish bigotry the poster said she’d suffered.
And now I’m nasty .
And my post is deleted.
I honestly thought that poster was pretty robust as she’s prepared to dish it out . But hey ho !

If you think I reported you rest assured I didn’t

And I’m touched by your concern by the way. So heartwarming.

OpheliaWasntMad · Yesterday 18:34

Bearing in mind my family, as emigrants , are far more likely to have suffered from much worse anti Irish bigotry than any of you who have only ever lived in Ireland with other Irish people. Especially during the IRA attacks in Britain.
So forgive me if I sometimes roll my eyes when Irish posters claim the monopoly on trauma.

Do you think none of us have ever lived elsewhere? You shouldn’t make assumptions about people.

What kind of ‘derogatory personal attack’ have I made? Can you quote?

No, and I never said that. I said Ireland has an antisemitism problem, worse than other countries, which it does. I’m not surprised so few Jews live in Ireland given the appalling reaction to that nutter threatening that poor woman.

Narrow minded outlook and xenophobia 😂 you’re so utterly wrong footed by the idea Ireland is anything other than wonderful that all you can do is say ‘no, you are’

It didn't read that way it read as though you were ridiculing rather than supporting. You have already mentioned on this thread that Irish people should move on from their "trauma" it read like a continuation of that.

Of course it was ridicule but we’re all supposed to play along.

JaneJeffer · Yesterday 18:44

And we’re supposed to think that the people who couldn’t afford the fare to leave Ireland during the famine were better off than those who got away.
