Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

@JaneJeffer
are you the poster who criticised me linking to the Guardian on the first page of this thread?

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2026/aug/04/ireland-five-matches-against-afghanistan-england-ecb-cricket

Anyway - there are Islamaphobic incidents in UK ( as there are in Ireland)
But the antisemitism is rising much more sharply

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/10/10/anti-semitic-hate-crime-rates-islamophobia-in-wake-of-oct-7/

I bet a single Irish poster won’t say ‘yep, bad move; we absolutely should not have been playing Afghanistan’ because their national pride comes before anything.

Tbf a couple of Irish posters did earlier in the thread but the threads been dominated by more extreme views since then.

The match itself was played in Belfast back in August, not in Ireland. Took a while for people here to suddenly decide to raise it, why's that? Where was your criticism back in August?

Or their criticism of the England team when they played Afghanistan in Oct 2022, Oct 2023 or again in February 2025?? No criticism of the English side for welcoming the Afghan cricket team as old “pals”…

Well - you might want to read this Guardian report since it’s a paper you like.

Reading about cricket would bore me more than watching it so I’ll pass

Very wise. You don’t want to read anything that might upset your world view .

Exactly. I’ve had a belly full of anti Irish sentiment for one day.

<sighs> But we didn't have sulky footie teams sulking and making tits of themselves with an Israeli team did we (yes we had the carry on with fans banned but we didn't have players behaving like big babies)

If you're going to object to a country be consistent. Don't snub Israel while bumlicking the taliban.

Yikes. Well hats off to the earlier ones.

@AgeingMillennial No we understand how Palestinians feel as Ireland too is a displaced and occupied country . And as recently as 1922 .
Just accept that I don't agree with you and that I find your arguements futile when you continue to make nasty personal comments.
I repeat - anti Israeli is not automatically anti Jewish . No problem with Judaism at all but huge problems with the genocidal Israeli government.

But will you consider that your country has an antisemitism problem.

I despair. Stop bringing up things that have already been agreed. I said all that upthread.

And there was strong condemnation in Ireland too - Roderic O’Gorman was extremely vocal in his criticism of this event. In addition, Amnesty International Ireland condemned the match, the WRDA and there were a significant number of grassroots and athletes protesting the match. There were also protesters outside the gates of the venues - The Pretty in Pink campaign. People condemned it and were vocal about their condemnation. Just because posters here didn’t see or hear about that doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. And posters here are solely using this as a stick to beat the Irish with… did all those pp who are condemning Ireland as a nation now turn out to protest the England matches??

I have to go out now for the evening but this is the very first article I could find about the Edinburgh attack. Don't cheer it on, just laugh? I'm quite sure if I had more time I could find multiple examples of people not just laughing at but cheering on Muslim hate.

Ffs saying a nation has an antisemitism problem isn’t a ‘stick to beat them with’. You need to avoid this ‘poor me’ language when discussing the much-worse fate of others.

We are consistent- there were protests against the cricket match with Afghanistan and there were protests against the football match against Israel. You don’t like the Irish - grand, we’ll get over it, but just be honest about it.

But the team didn’t refuse to play them. That’s the bottom line. Lots of British people opposed the UK refusing to take part in the Eurovision Song Contest. But what counts is what action actually taken.

I don't judge people by their nationality I judge them by the hate they spout.

One poster condemned the comments from that horrible irish man about Hitler and bullets in heads so we can but hope there's more who accept that language is not ok
