Ireland - wearing black armbands for a game near October 7th?

So the Irish football team thought it would be some sort of protest to wear black armbands for their recent mat h against Israel and guess what strangely the Israeli team wore black armbands for the victims of the worst terrorist atrocity in their country. So the Irish were left wearing black armbands for victims of the Israeli Gaza conflict but I guess not the victims of October 7th? No wonder the Israeli players were pissed. Ireland then dress and threw the dummy out the pram by saying they shouldn't be playing Israel again......pretty pathetic.

You can also see how for countries like Ireland October 7th is being erased from history as when they went for their black armband protest they probably very stupidly forgot about the proximity of a day of Israeli national mourning.

Of course it was ridicule but we’re all supposed to play along.

Yep. Always the butt of people's jokes.....

I’m loving this new top trumps of suffering that’s going on though. Very amusing.

I mean ‘we suffer like the Palestinians’ probably wins

I note that more of the regular anti Irish regulars have joined this thread.
Much of the same old rubbish being regurgitated.

As said at the start of the thread most Irish would not be even aware of a cricket team in Ireland let alone know who they were playing.
Another arena where some of the most vocal and anti Irish rhetoric is coming from those who claim to be of Irish descent. Yet they avail of Irish passports and often have holiday homes in areas in Ireland where there are extreme housing shortages.
@Gloriia this line from one of your posts: <is it really true only catholics on the irish footie team?? this line shows how much shite some are prepared to throw but it never sticks. Pathetic. BTW footie in Ireland is Gaelic football and there isn't an Ireland team.

Couldn't give a flying feck how others categorise Irish people. Insults against the Irish are water off a duck's back. Racist or bigoted jibes? Not the first time and probably won't be the last. No, croppies are still not lying down.

@AgeingMillennial ''You won’t realise what’s happened until it’s happened; and by then your reputation will be long gone I’m afraid.''
Again most wouldn't give a flying feck. For 100's of years the Irish were mocked, ridiculed, abused, murdered, and had land stolen by the British. So what's a reputation in the grand scheme. Nothing new and if it happens again they will fight back as they have always done.

Proud of the soccer players who refused to pander to Israel stunts.

I will ask the latecomers to this thread as I asked before.

WHERE IN EUROPE IS ISRAEL?.

Hopefully this question will be asked more often going forward.

It didn't read that way it read as though you were ridiculing rather than supporting. You have already mentioned on this thread that Irish people should move on from their "trauma" it read like a continuation of that.

They should. Holding on to grudges is toxic and bad for your health. We let go of hate from a million of our people being killed and all our cities being levelled in WW2. If we can get over that, you can get over anything.

I lost relatives and my great granddad was damaged for life by mustard gas. My other relative committed suicide after being taken prisoner of war by the Japanese. My granddad was buried alive as a small boy in the Blitz and had to be dug out. I also have 2 more distant cousins who drowned as teenagers on the Hood. Such a long list I’ve had to edit as I remember.

Thanks for your concern though.

I’m very sorry that happened.

I don’t think the UK has completely recovered from WWs though. I think it’s part of you now.
Maybe I’m wrong.

Thank you.

There’s also the long lasting non physical injuries. My grandparents were all evacuated and spent long periods away from their parents in the ‘care’ of other people who could be… less than nice.

Many of us have grown up with parents and grandparents who have bottled up extensive trauma, and every village has a central memorial stuffed with the names of men and boys from that village alone who were killed.

And yet I bet you wouldn't ever hate the Japanese or the Germans.

Of course not. What’s the point? Hate eats you up like cancer (I think it was Stephen Lawrence’s mum that said that?).

I can’t imagine my entire identity being the grievances of the past. A sad way to live.

I'm sorry for what your family went through. War is horrific and ww2 the worst ever and it led to the Geneva convention to better protect civilians in the future.

Can I ask who is this directed at? And who is hating who?

Thanks to all the Irish posters who have stayed in this pretty horrible thread, which has attracted some atrocious anti Irish sentiment (not reflected by my UK friends and relatives). I haven’t the energy to get involved except to help out the many posters complaining of Irish people thinking they are great and loved everywhere, and for the poster who said they were starting not to be able stand the Irish, for all of you, there’s a reason we think our country is pretty ok and some agree….

Ireland ranks 1st in "Good Country Index"

Today, Ireland was ranked #1 on a new report called the Good Country Index, released by British policy advisor Simon Anholt. And what makes a Good Country, you ask? The Index measures how countries contribute to the planet and the human race. Ireland r...

You’re not wrong. The reminders are very visual so in a way it’s impossible to recover. Entire cities don’t exist anymore that should still exist. Pretty much everyone has a family tree chequered with slain people, and the deaths were brutal - drowning, gassing, burning alive.

My uncle is Jewish and virtually all of his family before a certain age perished in the Holocaust, in the most unimaginable ways.

I don’t really think about it often but when I do it makes me really sad. There’s no point carrying grudges though.

I think, with respect, the Irish need to stop appointing themselves as the ultimate example of generational trauma and suffering. I think they were very shielded in WW2 to the extent most of them don’t really realise the sheer death and destruction that took place, and how recent and close to them it was - still only 80 years ago. So they carry on with this narrative that the UK has always been the oppressors, privileged, never known destruction etc…

A thread about Palestine and human suffering and you’re piping up with actual links on why Ireland is the best country in the world?

They're your words that is not what Ireland does so with respect stop continually making up claims about Irish people and what they think. Ffs as if anyone would claim that.

Israeli fans making racost monkey noises at a black Irish player, Israeli fans chanting IDF while insisting that football isn't political, Israeli reporters acting so disgracefully they are banned from the media call, Israeli players being such sore losers that they resort to my dad is bigger than your dad style insults but Ireland wearing armbands to remember the dead is the thing that you pick up on, sounds about right.

This absolutely

With respect @AgeingMillennial , I don’t agree that that’s what Irish people do.
I do think that’s often how it’s interpreted though. Certainly on MN. I’m not sure why. An instinctive defensiveness perhaps? Even though there is no wish to apportion blame to people today, that’s often how it’s taken unfortunately. Understanding is usually all that is sought.

I’m truly sorry to hear of your family’s suffering. I wish humanity as a whole could learn more from our past.
