Concerns about Israeli plans for Gaza and Palestinian displacement

Doesn’t look like there will be much land left for the Palestinians.

And in other news, from the Guardian:

“Israel’s defence minister has said he is committed to the ethnic cleansing of Gaza through large-scale migration of Palestinians as part of Israel’s long-term plans for the territory.
Israel Katz said the government would implement a plan for large numbers of Palestinians to leave Gaza “at the right time and in the right manner”, in a statement on Wednesday marking the targeted killing of Mohammed Odeh, Hamas’s most recent military commander.
Pushing for mass departures violates Donald Trump’s ceasefire plan for Gaza, which Israel signed last year. The second point of the plan states: “Gaza will be redeveloped for the benefit of the people of Gaza, who have suffered more than enough.”
Israel’s government has promoted the prospect of Gaza without Palestinians since Trump suggested early last year that hundreds of thousands of people should leave to “clean out” the strip for reconstruction.
Last year Israel set up a bureau for “voluntary emigration” and eased travel restrictions for Palestinians who wanted to make a one-way journey out of the strip.
The forced transfer of civilian populations is a war crime and a crime against humanity. Israeli officials, including Katz, use the term “voluntary migration” to describe their ”

Thanks Missy

There was a thread about a year or so ago
but it wasn't about the humanitarian crisis in Sudan
It was a thread just like some comments on here
ie
Why aren’t people talking about Sudan, where’s the flags and marches. Why is it all about Gaza

So
Like others at the time I ignored it
because it wasn’t a thread about Sudan at all

There are some very interesting points here that support your post.

How pro-Israel trolls exploit the people of Sudan and the DRC

While it is right to call out a lack of attention on forgotten conflicts, bad faith arguments reduce African victims to pawns in a propaganda war

I haven't seen any Sudan demos in London recently. Have you?

The UK government is not selling arms directly to Sudan.

The UK government has provided £230 million in aid to Sudan.

The UK government have imposed strict sanctions on Sudan to disrupt their military capability.

The Sudanese are able to flee the conflict and are doing so in their millions. These refugees are able to be supported by multiple international human rights charities and medical professionals.

The Stop the War Coalition protest to demand an end to war - all war.

British manufactured weapons have been found used by the RSF in Sudan. Unsurprising since we sell many weapons to the UAE, who are heavily involved in the conflict.

I'm not sure that all the people on the satellite pictures of El Fasher, literal piles of bodies, were aware that they could have fled.

Please fit these facts into your narrative of how the world works and the exceptionalisation of this conflict.

British components can likely be found in every single conflict in the world. Not selling directly is the key here.

Yes much more can be done, more can always be done to stop all wars.

The difference is that the UK is very clearly complicit in what is happening in Gaza. We still trade with the Israeli government. We sell military parts directly to the Israeli government. Our doctors are returning with accounts of children and aid efforts being directly targeted by the IDF and the UK government is ignoring them. The Gazan people have been kettled and cannot escape or safely access food or aid.

This is what people are protesting.

I suspect "Genocide in Sudan" or "Genocide in China of its Muslims" would get about half a dozen posts on mumsnet at the most and certainly no demos in London. The genocidal Israel is specifically an anti semitic trope to associate Israel with the Third Reich and the SS.

The awful genocide in Sudan is very different to what is happening in Gaza. If I want to protest against the genocide in Sudan, who am I supposed to be marching against? Is my government supporting the genocide in Sudan by lending support to either side? No, they have placed sanctions on both sides and are funding the supply of humanitarian aid. Sudan is an awful civil war in which the civilian population have been caught up but am I being forced to pay for the genocide in the Sudan? No, I am not, but I am being forced to pay for the genocide in Gaza, against my will, but it still makes me complicit and that’s what people are protesting about. Western governments are not condemning the genocide in Gaza or placing sanctions on the Israeli government. They’re not even neutral in the matter. They are actively supporting the Israeli government which means that indirectly, I am being forced to pay for it. Every now and again they will claim that they have pressured Israel to allow in humanitarian aid but everyone knows that is nothing more than aid washing so they can say later that there was no forced starvation.

Here's a link to the old thread on Sudan. It doesn't garner much interest. I believe there are a range of reasons for this.

It seems to be in the politics thread. I assume the @JadeHare either started it there or it was moved?

“What about Sudan and Congo?” is not a plea for equal attention to victims of war. It is an attempt to strip solidarity of political meaning; to apply a moral test you can’t pass. And, above all else, it is an attempt to stigmatise criticism of Israel."

So true.

Ihatetomatoes · 15/07/2026 10:33

There are a range of reasons why Sudan doesn't get the attention of Gaza. Despite arms sales, despite a much larger humanitarian crisis.

Disagree.

I criticise Israel and also can see Sudan is of little interest to some. The argument that talking about Sudan or elsewhere means Israel shouldn't be criticised is incorrect.

It is possible to criticise all the, wrongs committed in all these different countries. No need to shut down any of them. Fortunately, Amnesty do attempt to keep pushing Sudan as well as others. All can be of concern rather than one.

Mantanora · 15/07/2026 10:44

Britain dealing with the UAE and Saudi Arabia is not the same as directly supporting a genocide. “Now, as millions are bombed, starved, forcibly displaced, denied water, sanitation, electricity and medical treatment in Sudan and Gaza he is on the one hand not just covering for Israel but providing direct military assistance and suppressing anti-genocide speech, and on the other courting the favour of regimes that are financing and arming genocidal militaries in Sudan”. There is no doubt Britain, like almost all Western governments, are guilty of grave inhumanity but in this instance, it is not the same as direct support for a genocidal regime and my tax money is not funding it.

I haven't persistently conflated anything. Someone else brought up the topic and I linked a thread from politics. It is a factual point, however, there are many reasons for less interest in Sudan.

Also, some posters have no interest in any conflict in the middle east, wherever they occur, hence why the CITME board exists. People find different topics of interest for a variety of reasons.

We are not selling weapons to either side in the Sudan and we are not, officially, funding either side so I am not paying for it. Yes, we sell weapons to the UAE and Saudi both of which support different sides, we have no control of where those weapons go. We know exactly what we sell to Israel is being used to perpetrate a genocide.

I think you completely missed the point.

Someone else made a point asking about Sudan and I linked to a thread in politics. These threads feel like some posters don't like people making factual points. Surely, it's ok for me to reply to someone asking about Sudan.

I view arms sales in the same way wherever they end up. People are people.

I don't personally care whether you oppose arms to Israel or to the UAE to kill Sudanese or both. It makes no difference to me. I am allowed to reply to a post asking if there were any threads about Sudan. There are, I linked one. 😊

I think there is a lot of binary thinking. Surely, several things might all be considered.

You mean if Britain sold them to Germany, for example, and then Germany sold them on to Israel. If Britain knew that those weapons were specifically being bought by Germany in order to supply Israel they should absolutely block the sale. If, on the other hand, Britain found out after the fact that some of the weapons went to Israel, there is not a lot they can do. I'm not talking about just weapons sales though. I am talking about direct military and diplomatic support which I am paying for.

Thank you for this article - Barry Malone is excellent.

So much in there that resonates, not least his questioning of the true motivation behind the trolling:

If you don’t protest against the conflicts in Sudan or the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), you are antisemitic, and you are only moved to care about the Palestinian people because it serves your anti-western agenda.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and contend that the people who make that argument couldn’t care less about the conflicts in Sudan or the DRC. Searches of their posts on social media almost uniformly reveal that they have never mentioned either place, unless it is to score disingenuous points against the pro-Palestine movement.’’

That is just the writer's opinion.

Other writers will give the opinion that people are obsessed with Israel wars (& UK "complicity" in those wars) more than wars in any other country due to ingrained bias against Jewish people, conscious or unconscious.

All just opinions and we choose which ones we believe.
