The silence about the war in Sudan

On one side, the few articles about it present it as a massive humanitarian crisis, spanning more than two years. Genocide, intentional starvation of civilians, extended rape, over 10 million people displaced.
On the other, we get only an article every blue moon, people seem to be really quiet about it. It looks like we do not care, to be honest.
At least, recently US has defined it as genocide and included banning of weapons sells to the area. Praying for more nations, particularly UAE to join the ban. No more money and weapons. Hopefully active pressure to stop the barbaric things they are doing.
Am I alone in thinking more should be talked about regarding this war? That it looks like we do not care at all about what is happening there?

I didn't want this thread to go unanswered. Yes there does appear to be a strong lack of interest in what is happening in Sudan from the UK Government and the public. Although it is good that at least the US is showing an interest in.

You are also correct that the UAE is the primary supporter of the Sudanese Government and the major importer of Sudan's agricultural exports.

Thanks so much @1dayatatime

I absolutely agree. It has been shocking how limited the press coverage has been of this huge crisis, especially considering the coverage of other wars (will not name). Aside from the possible racist undertones of the lack of coverage I do think that the Sudanese war is much more complex to understand and no obvious good/bad parties which doesn't help western journalists tell a story about it. That isn't to condone the lack of coverage just a factor in it.

zerogrey · 13/01/2025 12:46

It's because Sudan isn't a white country so people couldn't give a shit. When the violence in Ukraine erupted everyone was up in arms about it. That's the horrible reality. It's the same with the genocide in occupied Palestine. Nobody cares. It's disgusting.

MushMonster · 13/01/2025 12:48

I mist confess I do not understand how it started either and to me, both sides seem to be guilty indeed.
Just hoping for a bit more awareness, so at least there is some pressure within countries to put on Sudan armed parties and on those who carry on selling them arms. It worries me that most people do not even know it is happening.

Maybes should read more but I feel this is a conflict that has run for decades - as a county it has never achieved stabiliity - it has had more years of conflict than peace. Maybes that's because I have worked with many Sudanese people who have basically fled their homeland

Doesn't it become hard to influence when you don't have much trade with the county ?

MushMonster · 13/01/2025 18:34

I do not think this war can be described as a continuation of the previous, though surely it originates from previous issues. It is very bitter.
Yes, difficult if we do not trade directly, but we may trade with others that do (UAE and Chad...). If they stop the trade (gold buying) and selling of weapons, I do not think the war parties are holding much of a reserve of those.
UN did pass a ceasefire last year. Negotiations were attempted, but failed. UK is actually the penholder in the UN for this conflict. We have sent and are due to send quite a bit of aid indeed.

Last time I checked the UK and US aren't funding and assisting the aggressors in Sudan, before someone unhelpfully pipes up "why nO PrOteSts fOr SuDan!"

(Obviously what's happening in Sudan is awful.)

midgetastic · 13/01/2025 18:55

I think OP hinted that whilst we may not be directly funding the war , we could do more with the countries that are funding the bombs like I think the UAE

MushMonster · 13/01/2025 19:08

I am not saying we are funding it or anything like this. Reports do point at other countries having an effect on keeping it going.
Not that the humble UK citizen can really do much, I know, but it saddens me that it remains unspoken about, while it is described by the guys going over there as a huge humanitarian crisis. And millions displaced. It is a proper horror. I just do not want to leave it unmentioned, because it looks like we do not care about this people. But we do. Some may be reading this. We do care about them and their families.

Well the Israel/Palestine war is v complex morally too, tho Hamas are clearly evil.

CopperWhite · 20/08/2025 19:48

We do care. The problem is that our protests against human suffering are ignored by our government even when there is a clear aggressor, and someone we call an ally contravenes international law.

The suffering in Sudan should be more widely recognised and I am guilty of not having a better understanding of their politics, but more awareness will make little difference to our government sadly.

coxesorangepippin · 20/08/2025 19:49

It's because they're black

coxesorangepippin · 20/08/2025 19:50

Yes, we know all about Hamas/Israel/Palestine

This is the war that people haven't heard about

Right??

midgetastic · 20/08/2025 21:20

Wasn’t it on the telly / news the last time I watched - so Saturday ?

the trouble there has also a very long history which I understand less but not sure what would be reliable sources
