UN Security Council to vote on Strait of Hormuz

The UN Security Council’s vote on a proposal to ensure the safety of ships in the Strait of Hormuz has been rescheduled from Friday to Saturday, according to media reports.

The council’s 15 members are set to vote on a resolution from Bahrain aimed at protecting commercial shipping in the critical waterway, which usually carries about one-fifth of global oil and natural gas supplies.

The Associated Press and Reuters news agencies have reported that a draft resolution includes text authorising countries “to use all defensive means necessary” to protect commercial shipping.

The proposal is considered unlikely to pass, as China, a veto-wielding permanent member of the council, has made it clear that it opposes any resolution that mentions the use of force.

Ha! I studied Philosophy, including Moral Philosophy and Logic and my dc like to joke that I just like to argue with people. I do find it frustrating when people persist in their pov without being fully informed or even interested in learning from the discussion. How else can one grow?

I agree! I also find it frustrating. I hope that one day I will learn to be more philosophical about it!

For those who don't do social media. The latest post from the very presidential Trump, Leader of the free world, preventer of 8 or nine wars, winner of the FIFA peace prize.

tl;dr
Tell me you're batshit crazy without telling me you are batshit crazy.

President Trump: “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell - JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah. President DONALD J. TRUMP”

In case my language upsets anyone. Please replace batshit crazy with 'insane'.

From the sky feed just now -

"Iran and Oman discuss Strait of Hormuz
Officials from Oman and Iran have been holding talks today amid continuing disruption to oil trade.
The two countries have been meeting today at the deputy foreign minister level with the aim of smoothing the flow of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.
During the meeting, experts from both sides presented a number of proposals that will be looked at."

Good news that countries are talking. Lets hope they can get on with the talking without Trump sticking his oar in.

RedTagAlan · 05/04/2026 16:10

More on the Oman/Iran talks, from CNN.

Seems sensible. Lets hope. But note the part at the bottom I have bolded. Without a doubt, Trump needs to put his phone down and shut his mouth.

"Details emerge on last-ditch talks between Oman and Iran on reopening the Strait of Hormuz

By Matthew Chance

Details are emerging of the “possible options” being discussed by the Gulf Arab state of Oman and Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz.
The key shipping route, which Iran has effectively closed in response to US-Israeli strikes, lies in the two sides’ territorial waters.
An Omani source said the talks have been underway for the past two weeks and are focused on putting a “safe passage protocol” in place to allow commercial shipping access.
That would compel oil and gas tankers transiting through the narrow waterway, which has been effectively blocked since US and Israeli forces attacked Iran last month, to register with Iran and agree to fly the flag of a non-aggressive state, the source told CNN – essentially acknowledging Iranian authority over the strategic waterway.
The proposals appear to be part of a last-ditch attempt by energy-rich Oman, which has previously mediated between Washington and Tehran, to avert a broader escalation of the war.
But the Omani source tells CNN that the proposed deal to open the Strait of Hormuz would “be difficult to achieve under wartime conditions,” adding that “by far the best solution remains an immediate ceasefire as a first step towards a comprehensive end to hostilities.”
The source described President Donald Trump’s threats to step up US attacks on Iran after a new 48-hour deadline expires on Monday morning as “alarming”.
“Escalation risks untold suffering in many parts of the world,” the source told CNN."

An absolutely despicable post. I think it's impossible to deny that Trump is both a vile human being and congnitively impaired, as I have been saying for some time.
It's interesting that there has been not a single response from the prolific posters who continue to suggest that 'The West' is on the side of morality, decency, Democracy and are just trying to help the poor Iranian women and save the world from an Iranian nuclear attack.

I welcome any diplomacy in this awful conflict. It is excellent news that some countries are engaging in this.

Agree. Trump needs his phone taken away and be put in a straight jacket for a while and let the adults get on with the talking.

We have seen in the past few days that talk is working between individual states and Iran. I suspect Netanyahu will do something to try to sabotage any deals made, but that is another thing for the adults to talk about.

Of course, when the adults do manage to get more deals, Trump will be back ranting that it is all thanks to him, and his fans will be yelling from the rooftops about how great a deal maker her is. "It was 5D chess all the time".

Such is the post truth era we now live in.

The UN vote on the S of H was delayed again, not sure when or if it will take place now.

This morning, Sky news report that "following Trump's expletive-filled threat to escalate strikes" Iran appears to have flatly rejected his demands to open up the Strait of Hormuz.

An account attributed to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy, said in a post on X: "The Strait of Hormuz will never return to its former state, especially for America and Israel.

"The navy of the IRGC is in the process of completing the operational preparations for the #Announced_Plan of Iran's officials for the new order in the Persian Gulf."

The statement appears to refer to a plan approved by Iran’s parliament to charge some ships - along with banning US and Israeli vessels - from transiting the strait, according to local media reports.

Lloyd's List Intelligence said Iran was already operating what it called a 'toll booth' regime, adding that some shipping firms had already been making payments in Chinese currency.

It's almost as if Trump is trying to sabotage ongoing talks between other nations and Iran. Likely because they don't involve him.

Or is it 5D chess, where he is playing the part of the unhinged madman with the biggest guns, to force people to the table ? He is the "fall guy" for the greater good of all. It's maybe all an act ?

The evidence is against the latter. Because the past few days his admin has boasted about how the CIA spread disinformation in Iran as part of the pilot rescue. Iran has no web just now, so that means agents in the country. Then Trump went on Fox, and told the world he had sent arms to the Kurds to give to the demonstrators.

Even if both of these are not true, he threw the Kurds and the protestors under his big bus. He just told the Iranian Government the CIA are there, and the Kurds and protestors have guns. A brutal regime surely won't act on that will they?

Based on that evidence, I would say not 5D chess. Just old fashioned mad.

Here is hoping the adults can keep the SoH talks going, and that Trump does not keep on with his incessant tantrum. Can someone just take his phone away please.

An act?
Haven't we already been told numerous times by Karoline Leavitt that Trump is the great peace maker? Of course the 'it's never been done before', 5D chess playing, stable genius has a plan. After all, he likes to stop wars; to quote directly, "some before they even begin".

Trump definitely went into this with a 2 min Power Point plan.

I understand he will only look at PowerPoint presentations in briefings if they have animations. But he really needs them Fox style.

That's not to say he is not a stable genius. He called himself that himself.

This is almost like a really big Brexit. Iran asserting authority over it's sovereign water, tossing UN laws aside. All these individual deals having to be made.

Brexiteers must be in their element.

No wait, now the Brexiters say they don't like individual deals. Now they say collective deals are best.

Personally, I think these individual deals are a great way forward -in this instance.

This just now on the Sky news feed.

"Iran confirms it has received ceasefire plan - but says US lacks readiness for deal
A senior Iranian official has now confirmed to the Reuters news agency that Tehran has received the two-tier ceasefire plan from Pakistan, and is reviewing the proposal.
However, Iran won't reopen the Strait of Hormuz in exchange for a "temporary ceasefire", while the US lacks the readiness for a permanent ceasefire, the official was quoted as saying.
Tehran will not be pressured into accepting deadlines and making a decision, the official added."

Iran also says (from same feed)

"Iran's Revolutionary Guards intelligence chief killed in US-Israeli strikes, state media reports
An intelligence chief of Iran's Revolutionary Guards has been killed in US-Israeli strikes, the Iranian state Fars news agency has reported.
Major General Seyyed Majid Khademi was killed in Iran "at dawn" this morning, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement shared through the news agency.
His funeral will be announced at a later date, the statement said.
Neither Israel nor the US have yet confirmed the attack."

If the latter is true, then what a great way to negotiate- not.

It is not in Iran's interest to accept a temporary ceasefire, given their previous experience of being attacked by the US during negotiations. Who would trust the US now?

Given the latest news of Iran death, how does that make negotiations easier?
I'm waiting for 08:00 hrs EST tomorrow.

Yup. Just as other nations are doing deals to get their oil through, Trump might just set out to scupper it all. because he is not getting his way.

Ownership of ship/flag, operator of ship/ownership of cargo, destination etc must really confuse things.

I think likes of Chinese are state owned ships carrying oil for state owned companies to state owned refiners with Chinese crew, so easy enough.

Other ships though ? wow. I think they can change ownership/ operator mid voyage.

This thread became totally redundant the moment Trump disclosed today that he wanted to take control of the SoH and charge toll fees.
You know, the Vz oil model. Take it. Sell it. Keeping the proceeds in a Qatari bank account that only he controls.
No one saw that coming... said no-one ever. (Especially Iran).
