UN Security Council to vote on Strait of Hormuz

The UN Security Council’s vote on a proposal to ensure the safety of ships in the Strait of Hormuz has been rescheduled from Friday to Saturday, according to media reports.

The council’s 15 members are set to vote on a resolution from Bahrain aimed at protecting commercial shipping in the critical waterway, which usually carries about one-fifth of global oil and natural gas supplies.

The Associated Press and Reuters news agencies have reported that a draft resolution includes text authorising countries “to use all defensive means necessary” to protect commercial shipping.

The proposal is considered unlikely to pass, as China, a veto-wielding permanent member of the council, has made it clear that it opposes any resolution that mentions the use of force.

Vance, from Hungary. Where he trying to help a Putin pal get re-elected.

“We’ve got tools in our toolkit that we so far haven’t decided to use. The president of the United States can decide to use them. And he will decide to use them if the Iranians don’t change their course of conduct,” Vance told reporters in Hungary earlier Monday." (CNN)

Who in the US confirmed it will not use nuclear weapons?

Vance clearly hasn't

Vance clearly hasn't

Reported in The Times that the White House has denied that remarks by Vance contained any suggestion of a US strike against Iran.

After Vance said US forces had tools they “so far haven’t decided to use” an X account said he had implied “Trump might use nuclear weapons”.

The White House responded, “Literally nothing @VP said here implies this, you absolute buffoons”.

I was surprised by their tone but it is irritating when people choose to make an awful situation even worse by scaremongering about the US using nuclear weapons.

The vote was negative. China and Russia used their veto. From Sky, here is what the US said after.

"Strait of Hormuz 'too vital' to be 'used as hostage', US tells UN - as vetoes criticised
Mike Waltz, the US representative to the United Nations, has been reacting to the Security Council resolution on the Strait of Hormuz failing.
"The Strait of Hormuz is too vital to the world to be used as hostage - to be choked, to be weaponised, by any one state," Waltz told the UN.
"We have long known that these countries are capable of obstruction," he added of China and Russia's vetoes.
He then noted that the vote "does not restrict the United States" in its military campaign against Iran, and said "the request from Bahrain and the region was not unreasonable".
"It was a simple resolution," he added. "I would note, colleagues, that Russia and China might have chosen better partners in Iran.
"They might have chosen to stand with our Gulf allies... but instead, Russia has chosen to be a critical supplier of military equipment to Iran.
"The world will know exactly who chose obstruction over stability.""

Once again the UN seems toothless to actually agree on anything or do anything.

This is what they vetoed

The failed text “strongly encourages” member states to “coordinate efforts, defensive in nature, commensurate to the circumstances,” to ensure freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. It also reaffirmed the rights of member states “to defend their vessels from attacks and provocations," in accordance with international law.

I’m watching the UN Security Council live right now. I think people should watch it for themselves to make an independent judgment and think about the values they hold. I place my value on addressing root causes and being principled and balanced. This has been an eye-opening lesson for me. The belief I had in the world, my sense of fairness and justice, has been completely eroded. I actually feel slightly dissociated.

I don't think the blame for scaremongering should be levelled at people trying to understand what Trump's tweets and Vances words mean. The blame for scaremongering, and the chaos and fear it has caused, belongs solely with the trump administration.

Trump and Vance are guilty of scaremongering for sure, but so are people spreading rumours they read on X that the US may be planning a nuclear attack.

Macron is convening a defence council meeting early tomorrow morning.

Twiglets1 · 08/04/2026 02:36

Thank goodness a 2 week ceasefire has been agreed by both sides. The Straight of Hormuz to be opened again and safe passage assured, as long as the ceasefire lasts. All fighting to stop, including in other places such as Lebanon.

Negotiations to take place between both parties on Friday in Islamabad, for a permanent end to the war.

Spreading rumours or speculating ? I can't see X sorry, so I don't know who is posting what. But Twitter can be a cesspool.

I was saying to a poster here yesterday that I think posting on social media does carry a responsibility. Loads of folk don't agree with that, so each to their own I suppose.

I agree with you, but with my usual over complicated stupid conditions. :-)

I live in a "very controlled" internet place, and DD, almost 14, has a phone that we as parents never check. No need. Everything is "curated" by the state. No Tik-Tok etc. Some people like it that way because the "state is protecting" them. Some people don't like it. They call it oppression. I am in the latter camp.

So while I do agree with you, I also acknowledge that it is a feature of a free society that people use the web in ways not everyone likes.

Twiglets1 · 08/04/2026 03:26

It is a feature of a free society @RedTagAlan yes.

X is full of people making stupid comments. I don’t use it myself but sometimes hear of comments being made - for example that Trump was planning a nuclear attack.

The trouble with X is that any idiot can say anything and a bunch of other idiots will agree - the whole thing snowballs and they think it’s some kind of “truth” because they read it on X and lots of other people agree with the opinion.

Maybe young people in the West should learn in school not to trust media (any media) without questioning it. But particularly sites like X that are almost exclusively based on opinions with no fact checking or attempts to be objective. Would be more useful to the majority than learning algebra 😉

For sure. I done the whole account delete twitter thing a few years ago. I had a VPN and used it a lot. But after Musk it really did become too dangerous. And no, not me being paranoid. He removed a lot of the "suspicious activity" features. And one had to be careful what one posted.

Musk threw a lot of people in authoritarian places under the bus. Twitter used to do ok at protecting people who posted stuff their state would not like. Musk and his "free speech absolutism" threw it wide open to be flooded with the "state actors" and the like. They can be quite easy to spot.

Arrests in for posting on twitter went up in many places after Musk . I reckon it will be a brave Iranian who posts on there. ( can't provide a link for that claim sorry, Anecdotally from my POV really)

This from CNN:

“We’re thinking of doing it as a joint venture,” Trump told ABC News’ Jonathan Karl when asked about Tehran charging tolls for passage in the strait. “It’s a way of securing it – also securing it from lots of other people.”

So it appears he is pissed because Iran thought of it before him. And now he want's a bit of the action. "Free money".

There is the small matter on UNCLOS, and freedom of navigation of course. But that won't bother Trump. That can be brushed aside. He will be setting up tools wherever he can. His logic will be "Gulf of America ? That's mine.. charge!"
