Conflict in the Middle East

Trump throwing a lot of people under the bus because of stock markets?

When you start a war you finish it in my opinion. There has been no other war that has been stopped because of a slide on the Dow Jones or an oil price spike. For Trump to now prematurely call an end to the war simply because of economics will simply mean IIrans drone terrorism has worked.

The people of Iran will be left with a job half done without the space needed for an uprising.

A new leader with good reason to ideological hate Israel and the US will realise the only method of future deterrence of Iran is through acquiring a nuclear weapon as their conventional weapons were obliterated. Iran will now do everything possible to acquire such a weapon.

This is a time for resolve Mr. President. There is still a chance to destroy this regime maybe with limited target ground troop assaults. The world actually will be safer if you continue.

Have you seen Trump recent present comments? He is positive he is talking to the right people in Iran because they said yesterday that they were sending him a present and it arrived today. A substantially valuable present ( but not nuclear related, oil and gas related)
There.
All clear now LOL

I hope is free transit through Hormuz for the queuing tankers. But we shall see.

I can’t see either side saying yes to those lists.

Re your pp I just listened to a podcast with him and it’s stark, he says the outcome is either $150 or $40 odd barrels. The former is global recession the latter is world prosperity. Either Iran interrupts global trade lifting price or Venezuela and Iran oil floods into the market for the latter.

Two widely diverging outcomes, highly recommend as he talks about other stuff that makes sense (and yes ik he’s ridiculously wealthy but has good overview).

I think the idea that after 47 years Iran rolls over to get their tummy scratched is fantasy TBH.

A warning IF oil prices hit $150

Oil prices have fallen after Trump said negotiations to end the war were progressing, while Iran told the UN Security Council Iran has told the United Nations Security Council that “non-hostile” ships may transit the Strait of Hormuz.

According to BBC figures, Brent crude fell by 5% to $99.29 (£74.16) a barrel, while US-traded oil fell by more than 5.5% to $88.41.

Iran earlier said there were no negotiations ongoing and that the conditions for a cease fire were not there, noises now being made about who made money from trades based around some of the announcements, if you want to believe the Sopranos script that they "are talking to someone on the inside" be my guest, it is complete nonsense.

Poor Iranians / Persians. 47 years ago their GDP per capita was one of the highest in the region.

Decades later the young especially still can’t protest that without torture or death and all of the vast oil wealth is with a few who are ready to do whatever.

IDontHateRainbows · 25/03/2026 13:09

I can see the Iranians saying 'sure Donald, we'll sign your deal and you can send your ships through the straight of Hormuz and then let's all be pals' and then bombing the first ship that does that to smithereens... Oh wait they've already tried to bomb one of his ships today.

Iran have been known to lie, you know? This is more lying or at least half truths (which Trump is also guilty of).

If there are really no negotiations from Iran's side whatsoever (not even through intermediaries) then why are they responding to Trump's 15 points with their own list of demands to end the war?

That is the start of negotiations and they responded very quickly to Trump's demands with a list of their own.

Smeuse · 25/03/2026 13:41

Iran are known to lie, however they hold the cards, Hormuz

It would be a fantasy if anyone was thinking that Iran would roll over but no one is suggesting this? I don't think rolling over to get their tummy scratched is a good representation of their demands:

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is demanding that the US closes all of its bases in the Gulf and pays reparations for the attacks.
Other demands include:
Iran is able to collect fees from ships travelling through the Strait of Hormuz
Guarantees that the war won’t restart, as well as an end to Israel’s operation against Hezbollah in Lebanon
Lifting all sanctions on Iran
No limitations on Iran’s missile programme

Yes their country has been ruined by the extremists that rule them.

Notonthestairs · 25/03/2026 13:54

No sign of those extremists leaving.

Now we just have to worry about fuel shortages and inflation.

I think people would have turned away, they did anyway apart from a few articles the protests and brutal crack downs went unnoticed. If it’s not on people’s phones or in celeb speeches it won’t feature.

Ok so they’re totally stuck, how awful but people won’t react. The weapon part is harder and exporting terror.

So let them? Idk

Saudi have a view on not letting them. Feels gloomy though if they do maintain the upper hand.

I know ... it does all feel a bit hopeless.

The Iranian people were not able to rise up against the regime on this occasion, which was something that was hoped for (not blaming them, it must be incredibly scary to do again after what happened in January to those protesting against the regime).

No, I am talking about the way the MSM here are latching on to anything that could point to lower oil and interest rates (all they have done for the last number of years is bleat for more rate cuts) they are trying to frame things as under control, talks happening etc.

Tbf anyone listening to Jeremy Bowen this morning will feel down about the prospects of that.

Can you link to a MSM link covering Iran"s response? I didn"t see that mentioned on Bloomberg or SKY news.

You're jumping from topic to topic.

Yes, and that was in response to a list of the U.S demands.

The Iranian regime is threatening to invade UAE and Bahrain if the US sends in ground troops:

“If the United States makes a mistake, Iran’s armed forces are ready to seize the coastlines of the UAE and Bahrain and reshape the region.” (IRIB state TV)

That’s a very simplistic condensation of what happened to the country.
