Conflict in the Middle East

Feel like once the hostages are handed over Israel will start bombing again

It seems too good to be true, a final end to the war.

After all the plans that were announced with regards to annexation and the Israeli far-right government members, I can’t help but feel that once all of the hostages are released Israel will go ham on Gaza.

There will be nothing to stop them bombing everywhere.

No hostages to avoid bombing.

No families pleading with the Israeli ministers.

Israel has broken so many ceasefires and this was with the hostages lives at stake.

I don’t know, but I can’t celebrate with everyone as I don’t believe it will last and my heart says that’s it’s going to get worse.

Is it standard practice for the government of a country at war not to allow civilians to shelter in underground structures, like in, let’s say, hundreds of miles long tunnels?

Given Israel have stated their aim is to destroy the tunnels, I'm not sure that would age done much good. And it's also probably not practical either. I take it you've not been down this sort of tunnel - I have (though not in Gaza), and they are unpleasant to walk through. You simply can't store 2 million people down there.

I guess the Bosnians in Sarajevo also let their citizens down by not letting them live in the smuggling tunnels as well. Totally their fault if they were killed above ground eh...

That you can just ignore the suffering of these children at the hands of Israel is just nuts. The lack of empathy is shocking.

Pointing out that its Hamas's responsibility to keep its civilians safe in a war it started is not a lack of empathy. Its allocating responsibility.

TomeTome · 10/10/2025 17:03

I would say that it’s Israel’s last chance. If they cock this up and revert to their disgusting ways they will be subjected to peacekeeping forces.
It’s the first step on the road to peace. They must leave Gaza and start the painful process of trying the war criminals and reparation. Gaza must be helped back onto its feet and supported to create a stable state from the devastation.

Well, then Hamas could have refrained from starting the current war two years ago.
I’m not blaming the civilians, but pp was talking about “standards of warfare”, and Hamas seem to be breaking several of these “standards”, by embedding themselves among the civilian population, not wearing uniforms and not letting civilians take shelter.

The complete refusal by some to allocate any responsibility whatsoever to Hamas is really something else.

Israel's last chance or what?

TomeTome · 10/10/2025 17:52

Maybe reread it? Is it that you don’t understand what peacekeeping forces are?

HellsBalls · 10/10/2025 18:02

@TomeTome “I would say that it’s Israel’s last chance. If they cock this up and revert to their disgusting ways they will be subjected to peacekeeping forces.”

You are delusional thinking there will be any peace keeping forces. No one will put their soldiers in a position where they could come into conflict with the IDF, an ally, or be subjected to terrorism off the Islamists.

This is Palestines last chance to act like a normal nation and stop terrorizing their neighbours.

AhWeNoss · 10/10/2025 18:33

Does the name Slobodan Milosevic ring any bells?

Referring to a war criminal and someone else responsible for genocide as an example of the horrors that can be carried out in war really doesn’t do you any favours. I guess if that’s the benchmark for war, it now makes sense why anyone would think what Israel is doing isn’t actually that bad.

Jeez, this is a whole new level of madness by those who are pro-Israel.

Exactly.

But in any event, Milosevic was the first sitting head of state charged with war crimes.

Netenyahu the 4th (al-Bashir is 2nd, Putin is 3rd). It's not a club you'd want to join is it!

Erm yes, Israel has actually strengthened it’s standing in the middle east over the last 2 years. They have basically eroded pretty much all their enemies, fought a multi-front war, demonstrated extraordinary intelligence capabilities for their size and will probably end up getting those abraham accords signed.

I mean I understand theres a lot of stuff people say on twitter but in terms of the realpolitik of this situation european countries have been completely useless and america and various arab nations have done all the achieving. Theres a massive gap between reality and what some people wish was happening.

People also don’t seem to understand the realities of wars and starting them. You start a war and theres a possibility that you will lose. You start a war and civilians will get hurt. People die in wars, which is why they should be avoided if possible. Theres a combination of wilful blindness and ignorance here. Tell me which war didn’t involve civilian death? You can’t punch someone in the faceand then when you get ounched back roll around on the floor crying and claiming they are the ones that started it. Anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together know exactly how this war started.

This is Hamas saying exactly what they think of civilians. Not because they couldn’t shelter them, they didn’t want to.

Not sure what you mean by favours. pp seemed a little clueless about what war actually means.

As you say, Milosevic was put on trial, there's little hope of that for Putin or Assad which gives you some idea of the powers at play. Perhaps Netanyahu will be.

Are some people really suggesting that these narrow tunnels, which released Israeli hostages have described and are more or less unbearable, would have been a place to protect 2 million civilians?

I think the only ones terrorising anyone are the Israelis. How many countries have they taken a pop at in the last couple of years? Though obviously the slaughter in Palestine is much more horrific. Israel have made themselves a pariah. The rest of us simply don’t buy into the idea that slaughtering thousands of children and starving whole populations is justifiable. The IDF when they come back from their jollies in Gaza will be living among you. I can’t imagine how they will fit back into everyday life. There is much work to be done on all sides.

mumoftwo99x · 10/10/2025 22:09

Of course he will. They don’t care about the hostages, they care about continuing their vicious genocide. How anyone can be in support of Israel when they have committed literal war crimes and crimes against humanity is beyond me.

What is your understanding of why Israel took ‘a pop’ at Heznobollah, the Houthis, Syria, Iran and Qatar?

I think the rest of your post underpins your understanding of the above.

Why do you think Israel only cares about continuing their ‘vicious genocide’?

What do you think their aim is?

EsmaCannonball · 10/10/2025 23:13

This has to be one of the most visually documented wars in history; all those fit and healthy young men with their fully-charged smartphones at every hostage handover and every bomb site and every hospital. If there was mass starvation we would have seen it by now. So far we've only seen images of deliberately starved hostages and those images of emaciated Palestinians who have subsequently turned out to be suffering from wasting illnesses. (I suppose there were also those images of a photojournalist staging photographs of children holding out empty bowls.) I have no doubt that people have suffered and gone without but there have been no images like those we have seen from Bosnia or Sudan or Yemen. All those Al-Jazeera journalists and citizen 'journalists' and people with smartphones and they can't find starving people?

One of the most disturbing things about this war is how Hamas - a group which has killed, imprisoned and intimidated journalists - has controlled the narrative and how almost all the media has unquestioningly played along.

GoldPoster · 10/10/2025 23:13

AhWeNoss · 10/10/2025 06:58

I don’t have any faith that Israel will respect the ceasefire. They have acted with impunity and demonstrated a level of brutality that no one could have expected. I find it hard to believe they will suddenly stop and withdraw, when Netanyahu made it clear he wants to control Gaza.

This is funny because I don’t believe for one second that Hamas want peace.

I knew that once the war was ended it wouldn’t end. A lot of people are invested in it continuing, although I’m sure those people see themselves as exceptionally caring and compassionate

I was just saying on another thread, my X "For you" feed has been post after post of very well-groomed, well-looking young Gazans calling themselves Holocaust survivors and talking gleefully about ridding the whole region of Zionists. It's bizarre - not remotely the actions of anyone who has been genuinely starved and terrorised. Maybe it's just a bunch of grifters, I don't know, half of them are begging for money.

I think it a rogue state operating outside of international law and that the world has been too patient with this situation for far too long, as do most people.
