Conflict in the Middle East

Why do you get all the knobs at Glastonbury? (Part 2)

Bob Vylan crying in their cornflakes after having their US visas revoked.
This is pretty serious as one ESTA question is ‘Have you ever been denied a U.S. visa you applied for with your current or previous passport, or have you ever been refused admission to the United States or withdrawn your application for admission at a U.S. port of entry?’

So no US work or holidays in the future for them.

Also three festivals have dropped them, so far.

Freedom of speech yes, freedom from the consequences, no.

Who are Bob Vylan? The British punks who had their US visas revoked for anti-IDF chants

The group’s ‘death to the IDF’ chant at Glastonbury ignited a firestorm – and prompted action from the US state department

Knob with a silent k round our way if you're being a bell-end, otherwise it means a bit nobby, but I don't think the suggestion is that Bob is a nob because he's double-barrelled.

I stand corrected. A knob is a penis and a nob is a posh twat. Every day is a school day.

I believe one of them phrased it like 'I don't give a fuck about Palestinians'.

So one of them you think said they don’t give a fuck about Palestinians.

Rather than some pro Israel posters “have been honest and said they don’t care about people being starved & killed if they are Palestinian”

Quite an exaggeration even if one poster did say that as it’s hardly a common view you see expressed on here. If it happened at all it was most likely one person at the end of their tether with all the arguments on MN.

There are rules in a war too. Israel
has broken them all.

Can you please list the list of rules that Israel has broken? I’m sure they have broken some, they have got some unresolved issues with the Settlers that the International Court of Human Rights has ruled on.

Just for the exercise, which Convention or International body you mean? Because International law around war isn’t down to one single body or statute from what I can remember?

UN Human Rights Commission

Protocol Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949, and relating to the Protection of Victims of International Armed Conflicts (Protocol 1)

Article 12 - Protection of medical units

  1. Under no circumstances shall medical units be used in an attempt to shield military objectives from attack. Whenever possible, the Parties to the conflict shall ensure that medical units are so sited that attacks against military objectives do not imperil their safety.

The chief Rabbi has sai d this a moment of national shame and I agree. There was a singer allowed to cal! for the death of Israeli soldiers and by extension Israeli youth in our national broadcasting service. The BBC are quite rightly stepping staff back and revising their process after this and have made an unreserved apologies.

this was hate speech life and simple and you can't excuse that. It is illegal under British law to incite hatred against any group no matter if you have views on a foreign conflict.

the fact people think think it's all right to call for the death of Jews because of a foreign conflict is awful.

I wonder what would have happened if someone had flown an Israeli flag at that particular gig? Would Glastonbury still be the festival of peace and love?

No. The Israeli flag holder probably would have been lynched and this is the danger of hate speech and that is what we have laws against it. The police are investigating this.

Bob Dylan is a knob not a martyr.

Hamas could just surrender. They are never going to ‘win’ and look at what destruction they have caused by starting a war with Israel.
The IDF continues to pick them off.

Wow!

Israel is never going to “win” its peace though whilst it behaves like an absolute cunt. How many more people now than just Hamas hate the current regime?

Those 1000 people killed at the festival should have been the end. A diplomatic solution to end the cycle so they didn’t die for nothing.

As it is those 1000 are just numbers in another chapter of Arab Israeli conflict.

More than 1000 people were massacred so that was no more likely to be “the end” than if a terrorist group had massacred 1200 UK civilians at Glastonbury & kidnapped a load more.

I don’t think they would have phrased it like that more like you interpreted it like that because they said shit happens in wars or something like that.

You do tend to be rather dramatic you know.

Exactly. Dramatics don't move discussions forward. It's just repeating the same emotive points, over and over. The pattern is the same with 90% of threads on this forum.

Oh dear, you've just put Hamas on a moderate level. The reason they hate Israel is something you can't even fathom. If you're putting yourself on a par with them, just think about that.

You've actually said "those people killed" should have been the end so they 'died' for nothing. Shocking.

Oh yes, I'm told that I know nothing about the conflict. The irony is rife.

Dangermoo · 04/07/2025 07:13

Too late. It should have been anticipated that this circus would break out. No flags should have been allowed in, either. Then you've got the backdrop political message while this clown was 'singing' .

But it could have that’s the point.

It could have been the end. Israel making the festival the turning point. The conflict has been going on for decades, centuries even.
God forbid they compromise or give anything though.
Why they think the elimination of Palestinian is going to make everyone think “whew that’s sorted” is an anathema.

They are aiming to eliminate Hamas not Palestine ( or Palestinians) and can you give an example of any powerful country that has turned the other cheek after more than a thousand of their innocent civilians have been massacred?

No, they believe that they won't be able to survive, if they lower their guard. Israel is not meant to carry on in existence. That is the only goal of Hamas and Iran.

'god forbid they compromise'

So much to unpack in this cluelessness, another day on Mumsnet.
Been watching 12 angry men (1957) and thinking of Mumsnet.

It's not the only goal of the Iranian theocrats but it's the most pressing concern for Israel.

Definitely and I felt like giving up myself yesterday after MN let a post stand that was so personal it bought another member’s children into the debate (in a highly negative way).

But please don’t give up guys! You all do such a good job of debating this difficult issue intelligently despite the provocation.

Bob Dylan is a knob not a martyr.

I wasn’t at that particular performance but I saw Israeli flags flown. No-one was lynched.

On the most part, everything I experienced was peace and love.

What is happening in Palestine is disgraceful. What happened on October 7th was abhorrent.

Hamas must be destroyed, but the cost cannot be wiping out Gaza and its people. Israel must stop settlements and apartheid.

I believe ‘death to the IDF’ was a call to dismantle an organisation that has committed war crimes according to much of the international community. It was stupid, poorly worded, and has distracted from the more important conversation.

It has also overshadowed the important place art and culture - especially a festival like Glastonbury - has in educating and inspiring people to engage with the injustices of the world.

There were plenty of nobs at Glastonbury, mainly of the gammon variety, burnt crimson, swilling warm lager and throwing rubbish on the floor. But the core was still one of peace and hope.
