European Commission President days Iran shouldn't have nuclear weapons. Israel has right to defend itself

"European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said she told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday that diplomacy was ultimately best on Iran, but stopped short of calling for an immediate ceasefire.

Von der Leyen said that she agreed with Netanyahu in a telephone call that "Iran should not have a nuclear weapon, without any question."

Von der Leyen has previously criticised Israel's actions in Gaza, but said that Iran's non-compliance with the UN nuclear watchdog meant Israel "has the right to defend itself".

"Iran is the principal source of regional instability," she added."

Meanwhile EU again:
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expresses strong support for Israel in its attacks on Iran, speaking on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada.
“This is the dirty work Israel is doing for all of us. We are also victims of this regime. This mullah regime has brought death and destruction to the world,”

That is a very strong statement.

He is as usual ‘flirting with far-right’ because all he has to say is words (which is a pattern that makes far right and MAGA happy - they love strong words). It is typical of him. German people should be asking what he is practically planning to do when the next wave of refugees hits Europe.

Colourful? Your language was racist and dehumanising. What are you trying to suggest? using some of your language...Palestinians are a cancer and no one wants them. Why do you think it is appropriate to speak of people like that? What do you expect people to say yeah your right they're truly awful why would anyone want them. Do you know any Palestinians? I do and I'm extremely offended on their behalf.

It's interesting that I don't really see this sort of language and words from posters who say they are Israeli on this board despite them being at war. It's always from those with extreme, radicalised views who have no skin in the game, that do more harm to the cause they think they are supporting, than good.

You believe no clarification is necessary because you are now stuck. If you do indeed have a measured response, please feel free to respond. Otherwise, do not challenge the word ‘regime’. Something has failed ‘bigly’ in Israel as Trump would say. I am trying to find out what.

It’s not about being stuck, but about recognising that your responses were oversimplifying and deflecting. You’re passionate about this topic, but this doesn't seem like a productive conversation. Your posts remind me of a dog with a bone, repeating the same point without moving forward. People who try to argue in that way are never convincing. I don't appreciate overt rhetoric to manipulate any discussion, whatever the topic. Or maybe you’re just the type of poster who has to have the last word no matter how unconvincing. In any case while you are generating outrage online, real-world military resources are being allocated to tackle Iran. Interesting times.

He has completely lost it, hasn’t he? 😂 Senility and insanity are a bad combination.
He and his cronies are making a shit ton of money out of destabilising the region and the rest of the work will pay the price.

UK fuel prices are already about to go up as a result of this crisis. I don’t know how much more of a cost of living crisis we can afford in Europe.

Being dismissive will not achieve anything and these problems are indeed much simpler to solve if we actually use logic.

However, if you believe these are interesting times we are seeing, nothing more can be said. We have been here before with Iraq war and regime change.
We should prepare for Farge as a PM in the U.K. next. That is where we are heading if another wave of millions of refugees comes this way. But may be that indeed is the plan because it works for Trump and far-right to oligarchs?

Findoutmode · 17/06/2025 17:53

Just to wrap this up if I had to choose a side, it’d definitely be Israel over Iran. Sometimes it's worth stepping back and considering the bigger picture, which includes thousands of years of history, before getting lost in the noise. Off to make a Big Salad.

Vance: US may join war against Iran

Donald Trump may decide to join the war on Iran to halt its nuclear weapons programme, according to his vice-president.

JD Vance said Mr Trump would only use the US armed forces in pursuit of American goals.

“The president has shown remarkable restraint in keeping our military’s focus on protecting our troops and protecting our citizens,” he argued on X.

“He may decide he needs to take further action to end Iranian enrichment. That decision ultimately belongs to the president.”

Mr Trump’s dilemma was spelt out by Friedrick Merz, the German chancellor in an interview on the sidelines of the G7 summit.

He said that the complete destruction of Iran’s nuclear weapons programme was on the agenda if Tehran did not return to talks.

“The Israeli army is obviously unable to accomplish that. It lacks the necessary weapons. But the Americans have them,” he said.

I think the rhetoric from Trump and Vance is indicative of the US joining the war. They are perhaps trying to prep the MAGA crowd who they know oppose it.

This will drive MAGA mad. Which is potentially the only good thing out of all of this.

Not surprisingly this yougov poll shows the majority of brits oppose the UK getting involved in shooting down Iranian drones.

https://yougov.co.uk/topics/international/survey-results/daily/2025/06/17/e69cd/1

Would you support or oppose the United Kingdom helping to defend Israel by assisting in the shooting down of missiles and drones from Iran?

25% of those surveyed would support this

49% of those surveyed would oppose it

You can be offended. It wasn’t racist though. Gazans are not a race.

Why doesn’t anyone else in the region want to accept Gaza’s refugees?

It's true the people have been electing Netanyahu as prime minister on and off for the last 17 years.

But that doesn't mean democracy has failed in Israel. It is their democratic right to vote for the prime minister they want.

The UK had Margaret Thatcher as prime minister for over 11 years. I never voted for her but it didn't make me doubt that I was living in a democracy.

Yes and New Labour were in government for 13-odd years and were re-elected even after the vastly unpopular decision to go to war in Iraq. and we have a first past the post system here. Israel has a kind of proportional representation.

In any democracy, the government will be disliked by a very large number of the population.

A democratically elected government doing unpopular, controversial, extreme or even outright wrong things doesn’t make a country not a democracy. Governments can be voted out … that’s how it works.

Outright wrong? You meant to write planned genocide and war crimes I think.

I am glad we the Britons have learnt our lesson though and are totally opposing involvement in this war and have throughout been on the side of the oppressed Palestinian people in this.

Israeli people on the other hand appear to be in need of help to shake off this war mongering. Netenyahu’s government is a regime that does not represent Israeli people. And if their whole nation is a murderous bunch (which I refuse to believe), we have a bigger problem.

This is blatant mis-reporting but looking at your other posts, it makes sense.
The poll has no option for ‘don’t care’. It says ‘don’t know’ which stands at 29%.
