European Commission President days Iran shouldn't have nuclear weapons. Israel has right to defend itself

Nowayyousure · 16/06/2025 04:31

"European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said she told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday that diplomacy was ultimately best on Iran, but stopped short of calling for an immediate ceasefire.

Von der Leyen said that she agreed with Netanyahu in a telephone call that "Iran should not have a nuclear weapon, without any question."

Von der Leyen has previously criticised Israel's actions in Gaza, but said that Iran's non-compliance with the UN nuclear watchdog meant Israel "has the right to defend itself".

"Iran is the principal source of regional instability," she added."

So, why did you post?

What an insightful post, and so speedy too, and, most importantly, proving my point.

Of course you do, she confirms your bias.

She is a first hand witness, a Noble Peace Prize winner and so brave fighting for women's rights but still what she says is not good enough .You would have her learn hasbara. Somehow I trust her more than the men leading either Iran or Israel.

That wasn't what you implied in your OP. Glad you now apportion as much blame to the Ayatollah. Why would I "have her learn Hasbara"?

Netanyahu and his neocon cronies are the ones that threaten the stability of Europe. He would prefer chaos on his borders than peaceful co- existence and has been working for 30 years to destabilize the surrounding countries, pitching them into the hands of extremists when it suits him. His finger is in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon
He carries some of the responsibility for the flooding of Europe with refugees which in turn has shifted so many towards right wing politicians.

Nothing would give him greater pleasure than an attack on a US embassy by Iran backed proxies. Don’t forget the Mossad operatives that danced with joy on 9/11 who conveniently disappeared back to Israel.
Netanyahu would be happy to see Iran to turn into another Afghanistan with American boots on the ground, hundreds of thousands fleeing a taliban type regime into the EU and Britain. He would like to see the Americans and the Brits conscripted and killed while his own lads are praying in their Yeshivas and voting for his coalition.

What a brave, brave woman standing at the very tip of the spear of Israeli aggression. Let’s be clear: these actions are not about the Iranian people; they are about securing Israel’s strategic position. To pretend otherwise is dishonest. Even more seasoned voices, like the former head of British MI5, have echoed the same view. Israel isn't interested in building a better future for Iran it wants a failed state, one torn apart from within, so it can be left alone in peace. The outcome doesn't matter to them. And it certainly doesn’t matter to Trump either.

Democracy cannot come through war, Iranian Nobel winner tells BBC : “I witnessed horrendous attacks, they are hitting infrastructure, a lot of civilian deaths … It was one of the worst and terrifying experiences that we have had” Mohammadi said.

Mohammadi says she has left Tehran and has called on Israel to stop airstrikes.

"I deeply believe that democracy, human rights, and freedom cannot come through violence and war," she told the BBC through an interpreter.
For her activism, Mohammadi was previously imprisoned in the notorious Evin prison in Tehran, but was later released for medical reasons.

https://www.al-monitor.com/originals/2025/06/iranian-nobel-laureates-cannes-winner-urge-halt-iran-israel-conflict

Leading Iranian activists and filmmakers on Monday called for an end to hostilities between Iran and Israel, urging Tehran to stop the conflict by halting its enrichment of uranium.

"We demand the immediate halt of uranium enrichment by the Islamic Republic, the cessation of military hostilities, an end to attacks on vital infrastructure in both Iran and Israel, and the stopping of massacres of civilians in both countries," said the activists in an op-ed in French newspaper Le Monde.

The signatories included Nobel peace prize winners Shirin Ebadi and Narges Mohammadi, as well as the winner of the top prize at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, Jafar Panahi, and his fellow director Mohammad Rassoulof.

Iran's enrichment of uranium has for decades been a cause of tension with the West and Israel, which fear the drive is aimed at making an atomic bomb, a charge denied by Tehran.

"We believe that continuing uranium enrichment and the devastating war between the Islamic Republic and the Israeli regime neither serves the Iranian people nor humanity at large," said the signatories who also included the rights activists Sedigheh Vasmaghi, Shahnaz Akmali and Abdolfattah Soltani.

"Uranium enrichment is in no way in the interest of the Iranian people. They must not be sacrificed for the nuclear or geopolitical ambitions of an authoritarian regime," they said.

Calling on the Iranian leadership under Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to step down, they said: "The current leaders of the Islamic Republic lack the capacity to resolve Iran's domestic crises or its external tensions."

"The only credible path to preserve this country and its people is for current authorities to step down."

Panahi returned to Iran last month after winning the Palme d'Or for his latest movie, "It Was Just an Accident", but has been presenting his work this month at a film festival in Australia.

Rassoulof, whose latest film was shown at the 2024 festival, now lives in exile after escaping clandestinely that year.

Ebadi, who won the 2023 Nobel peace prize, also now lives abroad.

Mohammadi, the 2023 laureate, remains in Iran and his currently on leave for health reasons from a prison term.

Anyway back on topic - including Trump as it's relevant !! I half suspect he's going to leave Bibi waiting at the church or more appropriately the Synagogue.

In an appearance on the White House lawn, President Trump just declined to answer a question about whether the U.S. will strike Iranian nuclear facilities. “I may do it,” he said. “I may not do it. I mean, nobody knows what I’m going to do.”

Nobody blames Israel for climate change, for plastic pollution, for covid, for inequality, for Russia-Ukraine war, … The list is long.

I agree these conversations are not meant to lead anyone anywhere. We all know what we know. It’s just good to be able to occasionally say that.

Only nutjobs think Israel was behind 9/11 or - if anything there is more of a hint of Saudi nefarious activities but in the end was the rich Bin Ladin and his acolytes. I just find conspiraloon stuff so depressing and so many people seem to be going down those rabbit holes including Trump. Sorry if I was a bit rude and I appreciate there is alot of anti-semitic Jews run the world stuff all over X in particular.

Kindatired · 18/06/2025 18:07

@quantumbutterfly The point about the dancers is that the men who just doing a bit of routine spying, couldn’t contain their joy at what they were seeing in 9/11 because they were looking forward to having the US retaliate.
Israel has started something they can’t finish and now wants to drag the US into direct war in Iran. This has echoes of 2002- most analysts believe it would have been more prudent to try and draw Iran back to the negotiating table. It’s pretty obvious that a country that the more you attack a country of 90 million people, the more likely it will feel the need to be armed in the long run

True but then again things aren’t going great for Iran with this leader in charge so I hope he does get assassinated and a more moderate Iran leader appointed.

You know you would be screaming blue murder if someone else posted they hoped Netanyahu got assassinated and appealing to all sorts of norms and standards.

You may not believe it but: most of us are about equally as opposed to Khamenei as you.

But there is a difference between "opposing a regime" and "publicly calling for the abolition of any and all international norms and standards and endorsing assassination as policy".

Are you even aware that some ~85% of the global population live in countries of the Global South? That many of them do not think fondly about what I will term "the political West"?

If China deemed us a threat, I still would abso-fucking-lutely NOT be okay with them assassinating Starmer (whom, for the record, I despise - and not even over foreign policy).

Many pro-Israel posters on here like to repeatedly claim that people who support Palestinians are "radical" or "extreme".

What you are advocating for here is basically "international anarchy": anyone who has beef with any state can just decapitate their government. That is a recipe for chaos. Because, no, as much as you might want it to be: it is not going to be possible to create a world in which only "we" play by a separate rule set.

This is insane!

Comparing Western governance to dictatorships 🙄

That is utterly and completely irrelevant!

What you are demanding is a world in which everyone agrees that there is a very special set of rules that applies to only us and nobody else - and in which we determine who belongs to "us".

You have every right to want that - but the likelihood of everyone accepting this is about equal to the one of me being the next pope (I happen to not only be a woman but also an atheist): zilch!

Have you met "realpolitik"?

There's a special set of rules which apply to terrorists. They have a completely different mindset to me and you.

Yes, that is correct (though I should like to note that there is no internationally recognised definition of "terrorism" - that would be because Bin Laden was a "freedom fighter" and "our guy" when he was fighting the Soviets).

Now, please explain in coherent terms that do not presume "everybody thinks we are the goodies" why, say, China, would accept a world in which it is acceptable to assassinate heads of state - but only for us, not them.

Please note that China sees Iran as a vital partner, not a terrorist. And might have a motive to assassinate Trump or even Starmer.

"Everyone must share my views" is not a norm.
