Eurovision - was the jury vote impacted by politics?

mids2019 · 18/05/2025 05:39

So Israel massively won the public vote but with relatively few jury votes.....strange.

Was the jury possibly trying to prevent Israel beating Austria as an Israel won would maybe have got the Eurovsion organisers in a tight spot?

Brilliant song and it shows the general public aren't automatons swayed by politics when it comes to music and acknowledging a brilliant human back story.

There was an ad in Times Square anyway - telling people to vote for Israel. I think it put a lot of effort into using Eurovision to launder its public image. And cynically used a victim of Hamas as their star for this purpose. It doesn’t indicate global support for Israel’s actions in the war. Even in the US public support for Isreal has started to tip in the other direction.

Not that I agree with anyone trying to attack someone on stage.

They are committing genocide whether anyone agrees or not. Opinions don't change facts.

Edited

Are they committing genocide?

says who?

soundsys · 18/05/2025 12:33

I mean, pragmatically, it would have been a nightmare for the organisers of Israel had won in terms of them hosting it next year, other countries boycotting… so can see why jurors may have wanted to avoid that! (Not saying it’s right or wrong, just very much “easier” all round for Israel not to win!)

In Porky's opinion, ironically.

Which implies that hamas are going to carry on holding the hostages for another year😔sadly they have form for this.

It wasn't a brilliant song, it was a mediocre mid table song. Can't remember precisely now where the jury placed it but their votes did seem to represent the quality and performance of the songs. For the public, though, it's very easy to mobilise positive voting for one country - nothing to do with the song. Each voter can vote 20 times (and it may even be 20 times per device). So if you're motivated to want a particular country to win, pretty easy to game the voting system.

Are they committing genocide?

Yes, they are.

Says the United Nations, Amnesty international, the international courts if justice,Human Rights watch, various human rights organisations and many more.

Forced displacement of 85% 9f the population, the mass murder of civilians, mainly women and children, purposeful starvation and blockage of medical aid, the bombing and total destruction of all twelve universities, most of the schools and the majority of hospitals.

Israel is ethnically cleansing Gaza. They won't stop until everyone is dead or displaced.

And there they are prancing about singing in fucking Eurovision as if they were a legitimate law abiding state, instead of genocidal lunatics.

Deplorable.

Why? Have Isreal recently released a statement saying the war would stop if all the hostages were released?

That would be great news.

Whether anyone agrees or not? Do you mean according to you? I can see a small flaw in your argument.

The flaw works both ways @quantumbutterfly

Unless we see actual figures of how voting was done, the likely reason that Ireland gave 10 points towards Israel is not likely to be due to a change of heart of the Irish towards Israel.

I’ll let you google Irish polls on Israel if you want confirmation of how general Irish public views Israel.

Ireland is a good example because to its known strong pro-Palestinian support - it demonstrates how a minority can make a profound impact on outcome.

@AmIthatSpringy @Twiglets1

Just following likely facts. Do you think Irish public gave Israel 10 points because they suddenly had a change of heart towards Israel? 😂

There are approximately 3-4000 Jewish people in Ireland. Ireland has a population of 5.3 million. Are you saying only the Jewish people voted for Israel and no other Irish people voted at all for anyone?

That’s the only way what you are implying could have happened.

Did the Jews use their space lasers to prevent their votes (not for Israel obviously) getting through?

I thought the Eurovision was quite popular in Ireland?
.
The level of delusion by anti-Semitic nutjobs who don’t even fully realise or care they are cheerleading sub human terrorist monsters, because rather that than support the Jewish State, is comedic.

HonoriaBulstrode · 18/05/2025 12:47

was the jury vote impacted by politics?

Of course. It always is. Surely no-one was surprised when Ukraine won in '22? (The only surprise there was when France gave the Royaume Uni douze points. But maybe that was to ensure that the UK would come second and have to host the following year.)

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/05/2025 12:49

It always boils down to a Jewish conspiracy in the end, doesn't it?

Did you read the article ? It explains it quite well.

As an aside, I only know a few Jewish people here but none of them are uncritically supportive of the way that Isreal is conducting the war. There is a small % of the Irish non Jewish population that support Israel’s actions in Gaza. They are aligned to the far-right and are cosy with loyalists in the north who also overwhelmingly support Israeli military action.

You're conflating two different arguments.

I was referring to @PorkyMcChubbington asserting their opinion as supreme in their post

Your point refers to your opinion being representative of the 5million+ population of the Irish republic.

They have more than one space laser? 😮No wonder they got so many votes..that and controlling the media obviously🙄.

It's not my opinion, 😑 ta the United Nations opinion. You know, the people who's job it is to define genocide? And they have?

That ridiculous rhetoric doesn't work anymore.

It's not anti-Semitism to be against genocide. It's not anti Jewish state to say "Hey Israel, would you mind awfully stopping the mass murder of innocent children, and let aid agencies in to feed the children you're starving to death and treat the injuries you inflicted in them. Thanks!".

You know this already. We're not pro hamas, we're pro not killing children.

The only question is, why aren't you?

Can we please stick with the facts. Can you please just read the article.

Ireland is overwhelmingly pro Palestine- that’s just a fact that can be confirmed by opinion polls. So why did the public seem to vote for Isreal? Well the statistics guy in the article explains it, and it has zip to do with media conspiracies or lasers.

Nope. Has the (Iran funded) ICJ case been determined? Israel states it's target is hamas, political groups are excluded from the UN definition.

Stripes56 · 18/05/2025 13:35

SisterTeatime · 18/05/2025 13:07

Wow did you actually just post that???

I meant that there must be continued support for Israel due to all the tribulations they are going through - even if when there is also disgust at what the IDF are doing. Not that these people are supporting Israel for what they are doing to Palestinians- if this is why you are surprised at my post. This would hardly be a conspiracy?

My point is that you can’t use outcome of Eurovision public vote to say the general public has given a vote of support for the Israeli singer or Israel.
