Eurovision - was the jury vote impacted by politics?

So Israel massively won the public vote but with relatively few jury votes.....strange.

Was the jury possibly trying to prevent Israel beating Austria as an Israel won would maybe have got the Eurovsion organisers in a tight spot?

Brilliant song and it shows the general public aren't automatons swayed by politics when it comes to music and acknowledging a brilliant human back story.

I think the public voting system needs to change - people get 20 votes! With that number, it is possible to actively push one entry (eg Israel), whilst other people are just voting for the song they like best make just one vote. I think the vote would look very different if people just got to vote for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd choice - 3 votes only but weighted (eg 3 points for first choice, 1 point for third).

I am not sure the statistics back up your idea that the huge public support means that Israel had the best song? We already knew factors beyond the song itself influences voting in Eurovision.

I am not even sure we can use the public vote as a measure of what the general public think of the song. The method of voting does not allow that.

From a statistician and pollster explaining why Ireland (the country that has been described as « fanatically » pro-Palestine) gave the Israeli song 10 points.

If this can happen in Ireland - not surprising that a concerted effort to show Israeli support from a minority of people resulted in Israel winning public support.

I hope that Netanyahu privatises the Israeli public broadcaster KAN. We won’t then have to rely on the EBU doing the right thing when the world watches Israel laying siege on a group of people whilst taking part in a European singing contest.

Well the whole thing is political otherwise Russia would have been in it? 🤷‍♀️

the public vote (which matters) is strangely missing from pieces in several media outlets when reporting the right race to the top.

I think the Eurovision organisers do need praise for not succumbing to pressure and allowing Israel to compete and we see by the results there is a huge amount of public understated sympathy with the victims of terror and overcoming of adversity.

We have to remember that many survivors have life long psychological scars (and indeed tragic suicides have occured) get this woman poured her energies into singing producing a really quite poignant ballad.

Praise? It's disgraceful that Israel were allowed to compete. They are committing GENOCIDE.

That's awful. Why the need for violent protest hurting a crew member. Was the singer a survivor of October 7th 2023 massacre?

Yes she was (sorry just noticed you already looked that up)

Putting it in caps doesn’t make it TRUE.

This ‘genocide’ has been going on for how long now? How come there are still any Palestinians left? Israel are obviously crap at it but the Eurovision entry was a wonderful song sung beautifully. Yuval deserved to win, which she did in the public vote. Well done Israel!

Obviously a lot of people disagree with you hence the public view did not support your opinion.

Anyone surprised by the public votes for Israel is living in an echo chamber.

I am not surprised that Israel won the public vote. The statistics suggest that a minority of people using all their votes for one song can make that song win.

It suggests that it is some pro-Israeli voters who live in an echo chamber and would support Israel in a public arena no matter what the IDF does.

AmIthatSpringy · 18/05/2025 11:42

It's interesting to see all the pro pal brigade twisting themselves into knots rather than face up to the fact that they're living in their own bubble

Honestly ... this just comes across as a desperate attempt to explain what you find inexplicable. Even most of the people who support Israel wouldn't have just voted for them on that basis alone because - like me - they didn't consider that the best song and see Eurovision as mainly a fun event.

I'm not denying that some people will have voted multiple times for Israel for political reasons but they will be in a minority.

You could just as easily argue that members of the public not knowing much about the war could have been swayed not to vote for Israel due to the controversy around them which even Graham Norton mentioned which he probably shouldn't have done in the interests of appearing neutral.

Yes it must have been a shock for them. Probably hoping Israel would be humiliated at the event since they didn't get their way about them being banned.

Stripes56 · 18/05/2025 11:57

@AmIthatSpringy @Twiglets1

Just following likely facts. Do you think Irish public gave Israel 10 points because they suddenly had a change of heart towards Israel? 😂

I don't know and don't think you should speak for the whole Irish public either.

Actually the public vote wasn’t balanced. There were multiple advertisements (in local languages) urging people to vote israel, and unfortunately there is no down vote in Eurovision. Those who are pro Israel are likely to vote multiple times for Israel, whereas those who are against are more likely to boycott or have their vote split across other countries. Irrespective of politics (and the fact Israel is in the middle of committing a genocide) the Israeli song was mid at best.

What 'multiple languages' please and where were the adverts?

I guess you don’t keep up with Irish polls towards Israel?
I completely understand why pro-Israelis want to see the public vote as a measure of support. Desperate times…

Wow.

93% of children in Gaza at risk of dying from
famine and this is what you choose to post about.

I will never understand people who don’t care about the state sponsored murder of children.

Quite. The vast majority of us remain pro the victims of terrorism and very much anti the hamas rapists, thank god. We just don't run about the streets screaming our opinions at intimidated strangers, so maybe we're easy to ignore. Incidentally, I didn't vote as despite there apparently being vast quantities of adverts forcing people to vote for Israel, I didn't find any at all, even on twitter. Relieved it wasn't necessary, and that I'm not wrong about the mood of the public. I imagine it must be very embarrassing to think everyone agrees with you, only to discover you are actually very much in the minority and every decent person thinks you're a nazi. Seems a few here still quite determined not to face up to reality though!

Didn’t you get the memo? It’s down to a sinister conspiracy with lots of adverts making people vote 20 times each for Israel. You know how sneaky and clever Jews, I mean Israelis, can be, they even control Eurovision now apparently

edited to amend redundant wording

Stripes56 · 18/05/2025 12:15

Some will always continue to live in their echo chamber - it can be a safe space.
But the even the thickest of walls can crack with the force of facts. For the first time, the majority of the U.S. public have a negative opinion of Israel. Don’t be so surprised if public opinions support the plight of Palestinians and certainly don’t take public vote in Eurovision as a measure of anything the general public thinks.

What ads? I watched it last night in the BBC - there were no ads. But Britain still gave Israel the most votes.

There were ads on social media, including Facebook.

PorkyMcChubbington · 18/05/2025 12:19

Btw, you might want to actually look at the numbers; less than 7 percent of the people who watch Eurovision actually vote . And they can vote up to twenty times.

It's not at all difficult to see how numbers can be slanted when you're talking about tiny numbers of motivated people

There were ads on FB - but other countries did this too.

Prior to the semi-final, Serbian tv had ads on FB. I can't recall whether they were in multiple languages - I read some Serbian, but saw the ad in English - but they had multiple flags in their ad, in order to catch the eye.

They also explained how people whose country had not made the semi-final cut could vote online.
