Conflict in the Middle East

Eurovision - was the jury vote impacted by politics?

So Israel massively won the public vote but with relatively few jury votes.....strange.

Was the jury possibly trying to prevent Israel beating Austria as an Israel won would maybe have got the Eurovsion organisers in a tight spot?

Brilliant song and it shows the general public aren't automatons swayed by politics when it comes to music and acknowledging a brilliant human back story.

the public vote (which matters) is strangely missing from pieces in several media outlets when reporting the right race to the top.

I think the Eurovision organisers do need praise for not succumbing to pressure and allowing Israel to compete and we see by the results there is a huge amount of public understated sympathy with the victims of terror and overcoming of adversity.

We have to remember that many survivors have life long psychological scars (and indeed tragic suicides have occured) get this woman poured her energies into singing producing a really quite poignant ballad.

Well it could hardly be hosted in Israel could it, aren't they "at war"?

imagine having to hide under dead bodies for 8 hours thinking of your possible fate .....huge courage.

hey morons decide to try and invade the stage to possibly attack her? Breath taking stupidity from really quite unthinking protestors.......

Who is Yuval Raphael? The singer representing Israel at Eurovision 2025

Israeli contestant was voted through to the final in Basel, Switzerland

I think it would be difficult to host in Israel because of the security needed being at risk of terrorism and rocket attacks.

The jury votes are always political.

TheWiseGoose · 18/05/2025 06:20

It's Youth Demands isn't it? A bunch of morons indeed.

Twiglets1 · 18/05/2025 07:41

I kept politics out of my vote and voted for the one with the best song in my opinion which was Sweden.

Awful for the Israel singer that she had to put up with a couple of pro-Palestinian supporters attempting to get to her on stage during her final performance. Especially considering she was a survivor from the October 7th attacks.

One threw paint which hit a crew member but at least no one was hurt.

Cheetolady · 18/05/2025 10:15

Actually the public vote wasn’t balanced. There were multiple advertisements (in local languages) urging people to vote israel, and unfortunately there is no down vote in Eurovision. Those who are pro Israel are likely to vote multiple times for Israel, whereas those who are against are more likely to boycott or have their vote split across other countries. Irrespective of politics (and the fact Israel is in the middle of committing a genocide) the Israeli song was mid at best.

Standtallandproudalways · 18/05/2025 10:16

What was the public vote?

What was the jury vote?

I didn't watch the show but its always political.

Violetparis · 18/05/2025 10:17

The jury and the public vote are both political.

That's awful. Why the need for violent protest hurting a crew member. Was the singer a survivor of October 7th 2023 massacre?

Lolapusht · 18/05/2025 10:19

I believe same same thing happened last time.

It’s Eurovision. Never been interested and no idea why Israel is included as they’re not in Europe (I’m sure there are other non-European countries, dunno) but I did vote for them 😀

Found the answer, thanks

Raphael, 24, was among the festival attendees who attempted to flee the carnage as rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel and Hamas gunmen began shooting at revellers.

So people inevitably act what on advertisements tell them to do, and have no will of their own? Why would they do that if, as some groups tell us, 'everyone' opposes Israel?

People need to come to terms with the idea that public opinion shows varied public views, and these are not always what we are told by the media or certain groups are the 'right' views.

Violetparis · 18/05/2025 10:33

I think alot of people voted Israel because they felt sympathy for the Israeli singer facing hostility and because they are sick of the extreme elements of the pro Palestine supporters.

Oh my, hiding under dead bodies to survive. It must have been terrifying for her. What a brave woman, and now awful protesters trying to harm her. I hope those protesters are charged. What's wrong with them!

Good luck and peace to this brave young woman.

Because Israeli TV contribute to the costs. Same with Australia. The 5 counties that contribute the most (Spain, France, Germany, Italy and the UK) always get through to the final.

What ads? I watched it last night in the BBC - there were no ads. But Britain still gave Israel the most votes.

People may not be vocal but they still feel for Israel's pain after October 7th.

HermioneWeasley · 18/05/2025 11:00

It was disgusting that in introducing Israel Graham Norton talked about how controversial they are and the protests but didn’t mention that she was a survivor of the nova massacre. Shameful. I’m delighted that she did so well and she and Jewish people feel the support they have

The bit that really gets me from the stories of survivors is the amount of time they waited with no-one coming. In that sort of situation you would expect the police or army to rescue you and there was nothing. I’ve heard of so many of them hiding/avoiding the terrorists multiple times, running then finding what they thought was safety only to be found by more terrorists.

I saw this too. I saw several posts on Facebook telling people to vote for Israel, and one of the ones I saw encouraged repeated posting. The song wasn’t that great so I don’t think it was a case of juries voting against Israel but more likely the public deliberately voting for them.

People started celebrating 7/10 whilst the attack was still ongoing. They celebrated this in the UK.
Yuval Raphael is stronger and more courageous than they will ever be.
