Nations pull out of Eurovision after Israel allowed to compete

Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and the Netherlands will boycott next year’s Eurovision Song Contest after public broadcasters decided to let Israel compete.

Major financier Germany and next year’s host Austria had warned that they would withdraw from Eurovision if Israel was expelled, like Russia was after the invasion of Ukraine.

That would have left the organisers European Broadcasting Union (EBU), searching for a new host city before May, plunging the contest into even more chaos than it currently faces.

Let them go, good riddance!

LlynTegid · 04/12/2025 19:49

I don't think Israel should ever have been in the contest, nor Australia. They are not in Europe.

Yes I agree.

Germany is Israel's closest ally in Europe. Good for them showing some backbone (Starmer take note!)

Would rather have Germany on my side than countries like Ireland or Slovenia 😂

Yes they do tend to be on the right side of history always....

But they have been in the EBU which is the criteria for participation. This area, as defined by the International Telecommunications Union, extends from the Atlantic to the meridian 40 deg E. It is bounded on the south by the 30th parallel. Jerusalem is 35 deg E, and on the 32nd parallel. This definition also allows for participation by Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, the Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria and Tunisia. However these countries don't take part because Israel does. Morocco was so petty that it did enter in 1980 when Israel withdrew for Passover.

But yeah, Israel is the problem.

I used to agree with you on the geographic exclusion but over time I now think it's fair enough. There doesn't seem to be anything else like it globally and so I think it's good it's grown!

Completely unrelated to the above I think Israel will do really well with the popular vote again.

No country is always on the 'right side of history'. Germany has done better than many at facing up to its history. Spain who persecuted the Jews and finally expelled them could perhaps take note.

Martymcfly24 · 04/12/2025 19:56

Yes they do tend to be on the right side of history always....

Some countries have the ability to move forward in positive ways and rebuild relationships for the benefit of both parties.

Some don't.

It's healthier not to be stuck in the past.

The phrase “the right side of history” makes me cringe.

Anyway, some people are so entrenched in the past they might as well be living there.

No country is free from a shameful or bloody past.

God forbid any country tries to have some kind of reckoning with themselves. God forbid any country actually chooses to move forwards peacefully. God forbid any country would wish to have good relations with its neighbours.

Whose talking about the past?

Germany is supporting a country that killed an 8 and 10 year old by drone this week.

Fair play to them.

Have you any idea how many children have been killed in the world this week? No, I don't suppose you do.

Obviously I don't. Do you?

But I would wonder how many of them were shot by drones operated by a solider of a most moral army of a democracy supported by some of the biggest economies in the world.

Not a huge amount I would hazard to guess.

You were talking about the past when you said in relation to Germany Yes they do tend to be on the right side of history always....

Does Germany open themselves to being attacked too just for supporting Israel?

They are showing support for Israel because they were attacked on 7/10/23 and because they are facing an enemy who seek to eradicate Jews "from the river to the sea".

You are. You said, and I quote “Yes they do tend to be on the right side of history always…

Germany is supporting a country that killed an 8 and 10 year old by drone this week.

I suppose we could back and forwards all night with variations of:

”But X country is supporting Y country, and Y country did Z”.

But, for some reason, that line of reasoning is only ever considered valid if Y country is Israel. So to me, it is completely meaningless.

Anyway, I doubt Germany cares very much about what MartyMcfly24 on Mumsnet thinks.

I doubt Germany cares about what anyone thinks.

Perhaps you should stage a boycott?

Germany has taken in millions of refugees from the Middle East. There are currently 1.3 million Syrian’s alone living in Germany. But Germany dared to show support to Israel therefore all of that is now undone. Let’s make sarcastic comments about their actions during WW2.

Who would ever try and do any good, eh?

Martymcfly24 · 04/12/2025 21:26

@Twiglets1 I was talking about the past and the present in relation to your comment about preferring them on your side .

So their past historical actions and their current support of the murderous regime.

What a strange comment.

All I'm hearing is you want to criticise Germany now because they are coming out more strongly since the ceasefire in support of Israel.

It is to their credit (and Israel's) that despite the extremely toxic relationship between the 2 countries historically, they can now call each other friends and allies. Germany feel a special responsibility to support Israel because of their own anti semitic actions in the past, and somehow Israel are able to forgive them which is extraordinary.

Well Twiglets we can all be a little guilty on this board of excessive criticism of countries that don't share our view of the conflict can't we.

So unless we discuss all 17000 children who die every day around the world (I googled it) we can't discuss the two that the IDF shot dead on the CITME board.

Ok, good to know.

I don't criticise countries just because they are vocal in their support of Palestine over Israel in the war, which many such as France have been.

I only criticise countries for doing things that I consider antisemitic like this pathetic boycotting of Eurovision.

I'm sure countries would equally get criticised if they said let's not allow Palestinians to take part in competitions because we don't like the actions of their leaders.

Unsurprisingly, it looks like the majority of the German public would rather distance themselves from Israel. It really doesn't seem like Israel do have a lot of German support at all.

"consider antisemitic"

And there lies the ambiguity.

Bit like Ms Rachel being nominated anti semite of the year for supporting Palestinian children.
