I'm surprised this hasn't already been posted but Ireland passed a non binding motion a few days ago that “genocide is being perpetrated before our eyes by Israel in Gaza”.

Hopefully they Occupied Territories Bill will be passed even though there is a General Election in the coming weeks.

FYI OP you are going to get loads of replies stating that Ireland is anti Semitic completely ignoring the fact that as a country that was previously occupied there is deep sympathy and empathy with the Palestinian cause that predates the current crisis.

JaneJeffer · 09/11/2024 22:31

Yes I see that @username7891

No, I noticed it hadn't been posted and thought it was relevant to the forum.

You're welcome @username7891

800 years of British occupation would incline the Irish to sympathize with a similarly occupied territory. I honestly believe though that the Irish as a nation are not anti semitic.

It is relevant, I have just seen threads before where Ireland is mentioned there a very negative reaction from a number of posters.

JaneJeffer · 09/11/2024 22:39

I'm sure this one will be a haven of positivity

The article says:

It called on the government to “immediately impose trade, travel and diplomatic sanctions on Israel”.

The motion also called on the government to immediately suspend all military trade with Israel, immediately suspend dual-use licences to Israel, and immediately suspend the use of Irish airspace and airports for weapons transfers to Israel.

Suspending the airspace involves running into a diplomatic crisis with America as well as Shannon is a very important refueling stop for them. I think with the new President Elect this could be very contentious.

The Bill only stops trade with the Occupied Territories in the West Bank not the whole of Israel I think.

Janedoe82 · 09/11/2024 22:45

The cynic in me would think they are appealing to the SF vote. Which I find ironic given their record on terrorism 🙈

NotStayingIn · 09/11/2024 22:46

Genocide is being perpetrated before our eyes by Israel in Gaza. I’m not anti Israel which is the usual attack you get when you point this out, but it’s hard to look at the data and not come to that conclusion.

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 09/11/2024 22:47

Your headline is misleading OP - saying 'Ireland believes' anything is a bit ridiculous considering we weren't asked our opinion.

Our government (who may well be out of office soon as there's an election looming) brought this in, doesn't mean we all agree with it.

JaneJeffer · 09/11/2024 22:48

@Janedoe82 I think rather they are confirming how Irish people as a whole feel about the genocide being committed against the Palestinian people

JaneJeffer · 09/11/2024 22:49

Except for maybe a couple of people on here

It says the Bill wasn't passed:

The debate was couched in the context of the government failing to pass an amended Occupied Territories Bill, which would have imposed restrictions on trade with Israeli settlements in Palestine, in the lifetime of the current Dail.

Not disputing that but I personally think SF have some cheek!

I think most times a countries government is referred to by the country name in all fairness.

Obviously not everyone will agree with an issue as divided as this but from my own personal experience people are very supportive of the Palestinian cause .

JaneJeffer · 09/11/2024 22:51

@Janedoe82 with the election forthcoming they're going to say what people want to hear

@Janedoe82 with the election forthcoming they're going to say what people want to hear

It’s been totally politicised in the North and all they have done is caused division. Lots of Protestants are turned off to it due to SF hypocrisy.

JaneJeffer · 09/11/2024 22:54

That's a whole nother country @Janedoe82

gestroopd · 09/11/2024 22:56

I don't see how this will work re the use of Shannon airport. And like a pp said, the new US government.

However, maybe it can find allegiance with Spain (and Norway??) and be less isolated in this.

Especially because the EU is split over this. In The Netherlands, a Dutch Muslim being beaten up by a Zionist is antisemitic... mini Germany really. So we need Ireland and Spain to join forces and not be two split entities battling separately within the EU.
