I hope by some miracle Malak, whose eye was harmed in an Israeli attack and consequently had to be removed, can grow up to be an eye doctor as she hopes.

It is extraordinary to think she and her family do this in memory of the beloved father who was killed, even though they now have so little themselves:

And Malak too has her daily ritual. She and one of her sisters try to do a charitable deed each day in memory of their father. When possible, their aunt makes a gift of food for the dead man. “At night, we put it out and pray for him,” Malak says.

I don’t think we have this idea of doing charitable deeds in memory of a dead, much loved person. It seems a very special thing to do.

The concept of doing good deeds for a deceased loved one is a precious one in Islam. As well as accruing more blessings and rewards for the person, it is a way of letting the deceased loved one know that they are still loved and guiding those left behind. There can be a ripple effect, too, helping even more people. Malak's father was so beloved and set such a strong example that, even when they are themselves in desperate need, his family are inspired by him to look out for others. The people they help may in turn be inspired to do more good deeds, which accrue even more blessings for him and for everyone.

Thank you for explaining. That is an inspiring spiritual idea in this dark time.
