Conflict in the Middle East

UK revokes visa of law student who addressed pro-Palestine protest

With all the recent threads about the protests, I wonder what everyone thinks about the U.K. Government revoking the visa of 19 year old law student Dana Abuqamar. She said that:

“Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right, but it seems to not apply to ethnic minorities, particularly Muslims and Palestinians like myself.”

She is challenging the decision and has accused the U.K. of hypocrisy. These are her comments, which she said have been taken out of context:

I always see written on Mumsnet that “freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequence.”

Do you think the Government’s decision is the correct one?

Byeee! Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!
the government is being unreasonable though for only picking on young women they are unafraid of, when in reality there are thousands of men they should be deporting but don’t dare.

Plenty of Brits living in Middle East...under dictatorship...what's your point?

I think you'll find that most ME countries only allow non-Islamics to live there on short-term contracts to do various skilled jobs. usually two years.

onegrumpyoldwoman · 18/05/2024 22:18

Myb · 18/05/2024 21:37

Oh that's because you ruined their countries...only fair they turn up

So you are saying that we ( UK ) wrecked Iran, Turkey, Albania, Eritrea, Vietnam and Egypt ?

(Most popular nationalities crossing the channel in small boats)

Please enlighten me as to when this happened?

I don't think I even know properly where Eritrea is, never mind when we had troops there. 🤔

But that wasn't the point though...why are they going there in the first place?

Please check up on your facts before embarrassing yourself publicly...
The most common nationalities crossing over are Afghans, Syria, Iraq, Libyans etc and all of these countries have one thing in common - they have all been blessed with "freedom" courtesy of UK, UK etc and guess what? They're now making the most of that freedom...by travelling around. Why are you complaining?

For work.

Some ME countries prefer to 'import' Western workers with skills they don't have themselves.

Migrants in a dinghy sail in the Channel toward the south coast of England

How many people cross the Channel in small boats and how many claim asylum in the UK?

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said that "stopping the boats" coming to the UK is a key priority.

You can’t be pro Palestinian and pro Hamas. You can’t be pro Israel and pro Netanyahu. The leadership both want to perpetuate a forever war to keep power and do not care one bit about the civilians dying. They both claim to do it because their sky fairy is better than the other one’s sky fairy, but really because it’s easier to whip up religious fervour than deal with real problems.

@Myb from UK Government website -

The make-up of people on small boats has been changing. From January 2018 to June 2022, Iranian (28%) and Iraqi (20%) nationals represented nearly half of all small boat arrivals. In the first six months of 2022, over half (51%) of small boat arrivals were from three nationalities – Albanian (18%), Afghan (18%) and Iranian (15%).
However, since May 2022, there has been a significant increase in the number of Albanians crossing the channel on small boats. From May to September 2022 Albanian nationals alone comprised 42% of small boat crossings, with 11,102 Albanians arriving by small boat in those five months. In contrast, over the whole of 2021 there were a total of 815 Albanian nationals who arrived by this method. In some weeks over the summer, more than half of small boat arrivals claimed to be Albanian.

Those coming from Albania – a safe and prosperous country – are travelling through multiple countries to make the journey to the UK. Following the passing of the Nationality and Borders Act, asylum claims may be inadmissible if someone travels through a safe third country before reaching the UK.

These are official figures lol many who get through disappear and live in black economy but what you have done is proved my point. Majority are here because Britain ruined their country. I'm sure if I search deep enough, somewhere somehow there will be a British hand in Albanian politics too lol

Regarding your point, my issue wasn't with you. Another poster made a comment about why Muslims or Middle Easterns are in this country, and I countered it by saying that Brits are living in their countries too, regardless of the reasoning....fact is they are there. That poster has since disappeared lol

The British actually helped Albania by being part of a UN peacekeeping force in the Balkans after the fall of Yugoslavia.

Her linked in profile is interesting.

I chose to use the Colonisation of Palestine as a case study to illustrate my thesis, given its contemporary significance in the Gazan genocide perpetrated by the ethnocratic, settler-colonial, oppressive, apartheid state of Israel.

I’m guessing she’s one of the Americans who says they’re a nationality that they are not in fact a part of, but their great grandma was so they think they are too

It says on one of her socials she lives in Dubai.

That poster seems to use lol when they should be using a comma or full stop.

It's odd when discussing terrorism to be quite so mirthful.

Perhaps it would have been better to leave Saddam & Gadaffi in power then?

Most people I know didn't want the war in Iraq or our involvement but TB carried on regardless

Gadaffi was quoted as saying "You get rid of me and you'll have all of North Africa on your doorstep."

He kept all the desert tribes "in order" (whether that was by the right methods is open to discussion...)

His words came true.

I did wonder if it was a man. I find it hard to believe a woman could be so hateful and so dismissive of women and children’s suffering, despite what ‘side’ they are on.

suburburban · 19/05/2024 12:36

Yes you are right.
