Carrying on from part two....

Well as a starting point it then just fizzles out because of the general acceptance on the threads that the marches shouldn't be banned?

People would quite like a stop to blatant antisemitism and terrorist-supporting twattery on the marches. That's something different.

EncoreMoi · 16/03/2024 21:38

Some people really REALLY object to antisemitism being called out. Yet more often than not will also present as "anti racist". The irony is real.

PeasfullPerson · 16/03/2024 21:40

I think that if you want to encourage people to avoid stereotypes, and hatred towards a particular group, then making a statement which slanders an entire group of people is not the best way to go about it. It is hypocritical.

But I can see the statement being used as a tool by some people to demonise the marches and dampen down support for Palestine.

Richard Littlejohn is indeed a twat.

PeasfullPerson · 16/03/2024 21:50

It’s a shame really, I can see how the controversial statement encourages dialogue, but at the same time, it to me encourages the wrong dialogue.

People come on the thread who are insulted by the title.

Then people come on the thread who think it’s OK to be rude to pro Palestinian supporters.

Then it descends into people being called antisemitic, and nobody can really hear in all this noise, the genuine concerns and fear that some of the Jewish community have about the marches.

So I’m not really sure what’s being achieved here.

noblegiraffe · 16/03/2024 21:53

You've said this before. Quite a few times. You can hide threads you don't want to see, you know?

Are you really saying that Jewish people as a group are comparable to people who attend marches as a group?

@DustyDustyDusty I am glad you said that and not me.

It could be suggested that the only point of this thread is to demonise the marches and stop people from protesting for Palestine.

Would this statement be OK as a starting point for discussion?

@PeasfullPerson If someone was seeking to minimise and divert from the issue of antisemitism and intimidating behaviour at the marches then yes, I suppose this could be a starting point for discussion. It seems unlikely a thread on Mumsnet will be able to demonise marches or stop anyone protesting for Palestine, any more than Richard Bigot Littlejohn’s opinion will, but if this is truly a concern for you, it would suggest you think people lack the courage of their convictions if they could be so easily swayed.

Members of the Jewish community are discussing their fears and concerns about the marches on these threads, joined by other members of the Jewish community who feel differently, but you can’t seem to hear any of that through your consistent focus on how aggrieved you are that the conversation and subject matter aren’t confined to the parameters of your choosing.

I’m not sure what you’re hoping to achieve by trying to invalidate this discussion or dictate how posters express themselves.

PeasfullPerson · 17/03/2024 10:13

This is my view and I’m entitled to express it as many times as I wish. Putting the title of the thread in speech marks doesn’t take away from its insulting nature. It continues to be insulting, slanders a whole group of people and distracts from a discussion about antisemitic behaviour on the marches.

You still have people coming to this thread who are understandably annoyed by it, and the same sort of conversation starts yet again.

Also, the snide comments and insults that sometimes get thrown about on this thread, with the things said moving away from discussion points to a more personal nature, gives a big clue as to the level of contempt and lack of respect that is held by some (not all) posters, towards those who disagree with them.

You're adding to this....

Dulra · 17/03/2024 10:30

I do agree with a lot of what @PeasfullPerson says. The title of the thread is set like a motion for a debate which you either argue for or against so people contribute to the thread in that way and this can result in the main point of thread, which as you say @25milesfromhome is about
Members of the Jewish community are discussing their fears and concerns about the marches on these threads,
I'm not here asking anyone to change the name just wanted to reiterate how the name has influenced the tone and discussion

noblegiraffe · 17/03/2024 10:44

You think the tone and discussion of this thread is somehow worse than any other discussion of antisemitism in the UK and are blaming it on the thread title?

I've been on lots of discussions of antisemitism on MN in recent months and trust me, it's not the thread title.

Some people are really averse to allowing any discussion of antisemitism on here.

Indeed

Dulra · 17/03/2024 11:18

@noblegiraffe I was merely pointing out that the title is set out like a motion for a debate which invites arguments for and against. There should not be any against argument when you are discussing antisemitism so having a title that has a debate type statement in it is probably not the best idea. That's all I was trying to say.

You think the tone and discussion of this thread is somehow worse than any other discussion of antisemitism in the UK and are blaming it on the thread title?
I have no idea if it is or not I don't live in the UK so have not seen any other UK discussions on antisemitism. I am not blaming the thread title but as I've mentioned to me it reads like:
The only purpose of these matches is to intimidate British Jews. Discuss

noblegiraffe · 17/03/2024 11:19

And what it feels like is that people are circling back to criticising the thread title to avoid the discussion of antisemitism that was going on.

noblegiraffe · 17/03/2024 11:25

It especially looks like that when it is the same people bringing up the thread title again and again.

25milesfromhome · 17/03/2024 11:27

It certainly does.

It is the first time I have ever brought the thread title up and if you look back on any of my posts about antisemitism you can see I have done nothing but condemn it. I hate that you judge people so readily and insinuate something that is not true like

It makes it quite difficult and tbh stressful to post anything.

noblegiraffe · 17/03/2024 11:45

You might want to take a look at the PP who has just admitted to bringing up criticism of the thread title several times.

noblegiraffe · 17/03/2024 11:50

Back to the marches....you can now buy these t-shirts, in case the police need reminding.

I think many mn-ers find the 'conflict' board very stressful, it lives up to it's name.

I didn’t say that was the main point of the thread, I said @PeasfullPerson couldn’t actually hear the Jewish posters discussing antisemitism on these threads over the sound of their own grievances and perceptions.

ETA missing word.
