"Yemen, Yemen make us proud, turn another ship around!" was being chanted on the streets of London yesterday and last week.

I'm just interested in whether people think this is a reasonable thing to be chanting or not, because there were quite a few people chanting it. So a quick poll:

Crikey, I think you'll get lots of people disagreeing with you there!!

Tuesday Times contained a thought provoking piece by Melanie Phillips examining how our civil service has been infected by postmodern identity politics to the point that some civil servants believe it is problematic to label an organisation “terrorist” because it implies a moral judgement. They attend a course at King's College (had a four year £26M teaching contract with Qatar) which included slides stating, “condemning terrorism is to endorse the power of the strong over the weak” and “terrorism is not the problem, rather the systems they oppose are terrorist”. We have civil servants working in government who “hate the concept of the state” and believe Hamas’s atrocities should be “contextualised”.

Teentaxidriver · 18/01/2024 13:28

We live in a country where institutionalised dogma is helping forces hostile to the West.

That is quite something isn't it

The strange thing is none of that comes as a complete surprise to me. It seems to just make some of the fuckwittery we have seen and heard. A bit like oh that is where they're getting some of this from.

“terrorism is not the problem, rather the systems they oppose are terrorist”

Think we have all seen signs on marches or posts on social media or people with megaphones saying something along these lines. However rather that saying the system they say Israel/American government/Britain government etc

PeasfullPerson · 18/01/2024 16:20

How do you feel about the Turkish president labelling Israel a ‘terror state’?

Please note l, I don’t think that is an appropriate chant.

stomachameleon · 18/01/2024 16:40

@Teentaxidriver I fear that situation is widespread hence the reluctance to deal with outright antisemitism and terror apologists at the marches.

stomachameleon · 18/01/2024 16:48

It is no coincidence that there are lots of articles labelled 'turkey's double standard on terrorism'

Turkey strikes Kurdish parts of Syria all the time.

Anyway that's no new thing. Erdogan made that statement a couple of months ago.

I feel 🤷‍♀️

I'm also not sure why you're asking me on a thread about people chanting support in London for Houthi attacks on international shipping.

As my father had to leave his home in Turkey because of that vile little man and his minions. I don't take anything he says as being more than part of an agenda

Turkey is wonderful and full.of wonderful people that except Jewish people openly. The Turkish authorities and their fans however mean it isn't easy or sometimes safe to be openly Jewish and living there.

noblegiraffe · 18/01/2024 19:20

I'm thinking if I'm being asked about Israel, someone's assuming I'm Jewish....

I'm so sorry, you must be devastated.

It was a general question for anyone to answer.

I find it interesting how what views are considered to be majority/minority or appropriate/inappropriate are influenced by geopolitics.

noblegiraffe · 18/01/2024 22:22

Perhaps you could start your own thread?

OP posts:
noblegiraffe · 18/01/2024 22:23

I'm pretty sure that rampant support for the Houthis attacking international shipping is more likely to be found on someone who holds anti-Israel views though.

OP posts:
Trulywonderful · 18/01/2024 23:09

Actually I would say geopolitics don't really apply to this conflict in quite the same way they would other conflicts or issues.

Also who the majority or minority is doesn't fit the west vs others argument that some try to push. That narrative is easily proven wrong just by looking more closely at who are the majority or minority of supporters in different countries.

Anyway as Giraffe very pointedly pointed out this isn't the subject of the thread. So maybe start another thread on the topic.

Well yes

Unless the support is from ladies that like the Houthi bad boy thing according to someone the other day. They don't exactly turn me on because they want to kill me and my family. However will except some people have a shockingly bad taste in men.

noblegiraffe · 18/01/2024 23:22

They haven't explicitly said that they want to kill me and my family but I'm fairly sure that 'Death to America' would include 'client states'.

If not I can write you a death threat chant or motto if you feel left out

Something about massacring Giraffes but I will get in trouble with PETA

stomachameleon · 18/01/2024 23:50

@Trulywonderful are you discussing timhouthi chalemet?

I know that's ridiculous.

I really don’t understand the unconditional support for organisations and movements which are, to put it mildly, not women’s rights friendly and the minimising of sexual violence.

I suspect there is some misdirected romanticism there, but I don’t really want to delve into armchair psychology.

They are thick. Spend too much time on the internet. And are likely to be anti-Semitic / bigoted. Because they are thick and spend too much time on the internet.

MoneyMoneyMoneyy · 19/01/2024 07:08

And while I think of it - thank goodness the Israelis destroyed Iran’s nuclear capability (which is what they are REALLY mad about 🤣). thank you Israel for doing the world a favour. Imagine Iran with nukes!!!!! Such Wankers - firing rockets into 3 countries!! Absolute wankers and out of control. Glad they targeted ISIS though- another load of wankers

I suggested that, and it was before I saw the Tim-Houthi or whatever they call it story.

The fascination with the bad boy with added reliance on TikTok minus any knowledge, or maybe denial, about the essence of these "fighters" has a lot to answer, I think.
