"Yemen, Yemen make us proud, turn another ship around!" was being chanted on the streets of London yesterday and last week.

I'm just interested in whether people think this is a reasonable thing to be chanting or not, because there were quite a few people chanting it. So a quick poll:

Funny, it looked like you were just trying to have a dig at the person who brought up the environmental impact, and when that failed, tried to drag the topic onto how bad Israel is. As is usual with these threads.

@PeasfullPerson

Sadly the sinking of this ship which was carrying 21,000 metric tons of ammonium phosphate and sulfate fertilizer.

This will have a major impact both on the environment off Yemen and also on the livelihood of thousands of poor Yemeni fishermen.

I genuinely don't think that those people in the UK chanting support for the Houthi terrorists either understand or care about the impact of this on the environment or ordinary Yemenis.

Thank you.

It's impossible to make any comments on some of these threads without a small number of posters arriving with their whataboutery, digs and you must comment about .....

There are so many threads about different topics and yet constantly any comments that are not about Gaza or condemning Israel or the IDF, get the usual but what about.... it's like we are not allowed to talk about anything else, ever.

Where's Greta when you need her! It is an environmental disaster.

"Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, foreign minister in Yemen’s Aden-based government,which is backed by Saudi Arabia, said in a post on X: “The sinking of the Rubymar is an environmental catastrophe that Yemen and the region have never experienced before.
“It is a new tragedy for our country and our people. Every day we pay the price for the adventures of the Houthi militia …”

The people of Yeman have been slaughtered by the Houthis in huge numbers (over 150,000 with a further 200,000 plus dyied due to famine). They now have oil in their fishing waters. The Houthis really don't care for their people.

The Houthis really don't care for their people.

They care about as much for their own people as Hamas do for the Palestinians.

Given the environmental damage to the seas off Yemen and the impact on the livelihoods of Yemeni fishermen from sinking ships, I wonder if Dr Myriam Francois would still flippantly (and very ignorantly) dismiss the Houthi attacks on shipping as just some guys in rubber dinghies disrupting Amazon deliveries.

Indeed. She was very scathing of people's Amazon packages being delayed by a few men in dinghies.

She'll find some excuse for them.

@qunari
@XRAYTHIS

This is what concerns me not just on the Gaza conflict topic but other topics as well, that people have become so entrenched in their views and opinions become so polarised on both sides that you can actually have what I assume (from the doctorate) is well educated person dismiss the entire international trade system of oil, gas, fertiliser, grain, manufactured goods etc as just some Amazon deliveries. I mean seriously...

It really is an era of Trump'esque politics where actual facts don't matter anymore or are simply countered with whataboutery.

Another ship hit today. A Greek ship with 20 crew and 3 security guards hit by Houthis missiles and floating. Not sure if anyone on board hurt or what the ship is transporting.

I recommend reading Elicalebon on Instagram and also Ghadaalwa (who counters the misinformation about Yemen)

Thank you, I had a look. Claimed to have recruited over 200,000 men

The ship is True Confidence

bbc says it is transporting steel products and trucks.

reports I’ve seen (unverified) are claiming that “at least 3 sailors are missing and 4 have been critically wounded following the Houthi missile attack earlier in the Gulf of Aden”. Reuters also mentioned something about 3 sailors missing.

2 victims confirmed as Filipino sailors. The vessel was carrying steel products from China to Saudi Arabia, other crew rescued by the Indian Navy.

I'm wondering if this still makes the protesters "proud" or dismissed as a delayed Amazon delivery.

Pretty much.

These poor starving children are totally ignored. The Houthis who caused this problem in Yeman are actually praised by idiots for attacking ships. Make it make sense!

All starving children need foir aid and help everywhere.

The Houthis have got their very own genocide at home by the look of it, and they don't seem keen to stop it.

Indeed they have and sadly Yeman has been largely ignored

A Houthi court sentenced 32 men, 9 of them to death, on January 23, 2024, in an unfair mass trial based on dubious charges of “sodomy,” Human Rights Watch said today.
In addition to death sentences that include crucifixion and stoning, the Houthi court sentenced 23 men to prison for periods of up to 10 years. Three of them were also sentenced to public flogging.

I wonder if this sort of information would make the chanters drop their vocal support for the Houthi. If not, you have to wonder why that would be.
