Intimidating Jews as an objective isn’t something I’ve ever heard proposed or witnessed

And yet it’s happening.

PeasfullPerson · 21/02/2024 13:36

I don’t doubt that it is happening, and it shouldn’t be.

However I also believe that the likes of Elyon Levy and the Israeli propaganda machine focus on this and use it as an excuse to criticise the marches. They won’t be happy that the marches highlight the suffering of Palestinian people, which they would rather have everyone ignore and class as an unfortunate but acceptable by product of war.

I read that anti-government marches have also been shut down in Israel, and we have seen how angry Israeli officials become when officials in other countries criticise their actions.

It seems that the narrative within Israel is controlled to encourage acceptance of Palestinian deaths and portray Israel as the ultimate victims facing an existential threat. It must be frustrating to have it play out differently on the global stage.

Dulra · 21/02/2024 13:38

I want the hostages back and for peace to be achieved. Recognising both sides pain goes a long way.
@stomachamelon
Recognising both sides pain is important, as is recognising that people are equal and are entitled to the same rights. It needs to be acknowledged that the hostages being released is the starting point but won't bring about peace until things change for Palestinians, going back to the status quo won't bring peace

noblegiraffe · 21/02/2024 13:39

What’s really frustrating is the amount of times any discussion of antisemitism on the streets of the UK is turned into criticism of Israel.

It's about the reason for the marches which some suggest is to intimidate Jews so I think it is legitimate that people can explain the reason they have for participating in marches which in some cases includes criticism of Israel.
As far as I am aware there is another thread about antisemitism in the UK

noblegiraffe · 21/02/2024 14:02

I’m talking about the post before yours.

That’s not what I said though is it? What I said was of the many many people I know this isn’t an objective I’ve heard. The thread is about the intent of demonstrators.

both racists and anti semites are pretty easy to spot in my experience.Whether they admit it or not.

TomeTome · 21/02/2024 15:59

Honestly @Vakarian I think when people are protesting and talking about it they DO talk about what motivates them. I suppose it’s possible that there are huge numbers of people professing one thing while thinking another but I doubt it. I haven’t heard anyone trying to intimidate British Jews. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. I’d be interested to hear if anyone has come across this as a plan and what the motivation was.

stomachamelon · 21/02/2024 16:04

@TomeTome what about those who are overtly antisemitic. We have seen evidence. What should be done about it?

The CAS did 3 montages of interviews with marchers a few weeks ago. There were some appalling views expressed - really vile, extreme hatred of Jews expressed in the worst kinds of terms. While they may not be representative of the marchers as a whole, the fact remains that they were there marching, and unafraid to express those views publicly and on camera.

I don't understand what that means. Is it even a sentence? What is PP?

SomeCatFromJapan · 21/02/2024 16:23

PP is previous poster.

The more I read on here, witness first hand and see ion the news, the more I'm convinced these marches should be banned. How have we made it acceptable for people to behave like this in public? Yes we're a democracy and have the privileged right to protest but NOT at the expense of others. I worry that this rhetoric is being pushed into the minds of the most vulnerable who haven't developed the skill of critical thinking yet. Where will this lead?

So you agree with OP that "The only purpose of these endless marches is to intimidate British Jews" what makes you think that?

Would you rather we become more like Russia or Belarus?

PeasfullPerson · 21/02/2024 16:35

Conor Gearty KC, a barrister in Matrix Chambers and Professor of Human Rights Law at the LSE, drawing on the work of the late Stan Cohen, an LSE professor of sociology, explains how Israel has used denial in three ways to control the narrative on its assault against Gaza since 7 October 2023: “literal denial (it never happened); interpretative denial (it’s not what you think it is) and implicatory denial (we have to do it/it’s terrible, but it’s not our fault).” The analysis is clear and persuasive, but perhaps the most disturbing feature of Professor Gearty’s work are the illustrations he uses, showing just how predisposed Europeans and American are to be gulled by Israeli manipulation.

stomachamelon · 21/02/2024 16:46

He also wrote this about Hamas

www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/world/63545/hamas-terrorists-israel-palestine-gaza

He is not as one dimensional as you think.
