The majority of people are marching because they feel absolutely appalled by our governments support for the killing and injuring of innocent civilians in Gaza, and the infrastructure needed to support life. I don’t know why that’s so hard to understand.
People aren’t going to stop marching for this because a minority are using it as an opportunity to shout about their antisemetic views. It is appalling that somebody feels comfortable openly expressing such hideous prejudice. It’s people like this who are the problem, not the majority of people marching. I’m sorry this is making Jewish people feel unsafe. What do you think the solution is?

The problem is also that "the majority" are not calling it out!! Jews are, and we're basically told to sit down and be quiet. Do you really not understand why Jewish people in this country are scared about where all this leading?? But if you're comfortable marching alongside folks who think putting themselves on camera shouting "Jews are filthy animals" is fine, then crack on.

(And it's not just a tiny contingent - it's becoming a bit more than that).

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2024 10:56

I think when one of the speakers at the event is twaddling on about Zionist death cults to a large crowd, it stops being arguably an unwelcome minority and starts being obviously part of the march.

PeasfullPerson · 21/01/2024 10:59

OK I can see why it’s frustrating to go over it again. So the general consensus isn’t that the only point of the marches is to intimidate Jews, and what is actually wanted is for people on the marches to show that they are against antisemitism by refusing to march near people displaying such views, or if they are comfortable enough and it is safe to do so, then call them out? Is that correct?

I think that was the real tipping point, but so many folk barely raised an eyebrow.

stomachameleon · 21/01/2024 11:01

Is there any more info on Mr Al turd that spoke last week and had the misfortune to misspeak on stage?

@PeasfullPerson I wonder why people feel they can't challenge such virulent antisemitism and just go along for the ride? Caught up in the moment? Grudging appreciation? Shows how people can get caught up in something that then becomes the 'norm' doesn't it?

But imagine being on the receiving end of that?

stomachameleon · 21/01/2024 11:03

@PeasfullPerson they should be called out with a heavier police presence so people don't feel intimidated.

Yes well there probably is an element of group think going on isn’t there. I’m not saying that means people aren’t accountable for their actions.
Are there any posters or infographics anywhere which show what impact this is having on the Jewish community and what can be done to help? Shows what actions people could take if they find themselves in this sort of situation so they could be prepared ahead of time?

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2024 11:08

"I accidentally found myself listening to a speaker twaddling about Zionist death cults, what should I do?"

  1. don't cheer
  2. do walk away in disgust
PeasfullPerson · 21/01/2024 11:10

Yes, but some people really do need it spelled out like that! And they might not have thought through being in that situation.

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2024 11:14

Perhaps they also shouldn't be allowed to use scissors.

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2024 11:16

As in, this is primary school level of education.

etmoiandme · 21/01/2024 11:16

A bit more proactive calling it out would help, rather than the reactive 'we're just protesting Israel actually, of course these people are wrong but they're in the minority'. Be bold, call it out and make a noise about it, and that might go some way to helping British Jews feel less isolated and, to be blunt, terrified. I don't understand why folk can't do this and still protest the Govt's support of Israel.

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2024 11:19

I think calling it out when there is a large crowd nodding along is quite difficult but walking away is certainly possible.

But looking at the crowds when these things are going on, some are not joining in the chants but there is a distinct lack of disgust or discomfort.

etmoiandme · 21/01/2024 11:21

I should have worded that better - I didn't mean calling it out on the actual protest, more just to show support in a social media/online way.

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2024 11:24

Yes, instead of protesting "it's a small minority" as if that makes it ok, the response should be "fuck, that's horrible, I'm so sorry".

Well done Australia for calling this out (not directly related to the British marches sorry).

Hundreds of pro-Palestine protestors rally in Melbourne to throw their support behind sacked ABC star Antoinette Lattouf | Daily Mail Online

So what you're saying is it is possible for the ceasefire marchers to also protest about other things they care about, like the sacking of Antoinette Lattouf? So it is possible for them to also call for an end to antisemitism and the release of the hostages? They're just choosing not to? Thank you for pointing this out, it's much appreciated.

What I am saying is that Australia ( the radio station) have done the right thing in firing Lattouf and yes it is possible for the protestors to also call for an end to antisemitism and the release of the hostages? They're just choosing not to...and some behaving abominably.

Plus - spitting at police?
"'Police were forced to deploy OC spray toward several protesters and one female was arrested for spitting at police,' a Victoria police spokesperson said."

Not helping their cause.

I agree that turning to violence or antisocial behaviour is very much not going to help their cause. It's ridiculous. You can make yourself heard without resorting to terrorising those around you.

saveallthewhales · 21/01/2024 13:56

Yes - as then it becomes intimidating. I couldn't help but admire the images of the peaceful, humorous Pro-Israel rally last Sunday.

Extraordinary contrast in demeanour. No flares, no spitting, no loud chanting.

This, to me, is would be highly persuasive conduct during rallies or marches.

I just don't understand why you would willingly march alongside some of these people. If there was another march against antisemitism and I knew for certain a group of islamophobic twerps would be there and wouldn't be told to leave, I wouldn't go to the march. I wouldn't want to be associated with people who hold those opinions. Surely by now everyone knows it's a guarantee that these big marches will include antisemites, so why aren't they taking a stand against it? Your enemies enemies are not your friends. Don't pretend like they are.

This isn't the tiny minority that some posters keep trying to say. You guys can see from videos just how many people are chanting vile stuff. I see first hand being in London just how many people are acting out their fantasy of publicly being allowed to be antisemitisc.

Yes the protest do pull in a mixture of people and people there for different reasons. However anyone claiming they never see or hear any Jew hate is either blind to it or lying on these threads. It is really that simple.
