Can someone please substantiate if this picture is real or is it propaganda?

I have seen some disturbing images recently, but this one is beyond shocking to me. Surely this sort of thing is not happening in 2023?

Apparently the writing is a happy birthday wish to a child.

I cannot obviously read it to know if that's what is truly written.

Why would this be triggering?

It's writing on a rocket. Nothing compared to the things that other armies and military forces have done in the name of ridding the world of Islamist terrism.

This is war.

If you understood the psychological toll October 7 took on people in Israel and the diaspora, you would understand.

We are fighting terrorists. This is an armed conflict.

We're so shielded from this sort of thing in the UK that these things seem shocking to some.

PurpleChrayne · 24/11/2023 11:04

And yes - it is a birthday greeting or a message of congratulations to two people.

DysonSphere · 24/11/2023 11:07

What does it say exactly?

OP posts:
Humdingerydoo · 24/11/2023 11:17

It says congratulations (mazel tov) and then two names, one of them his own. I think the other name is his wife's, Maayan. Doesn't seem to be a birthday message to anyone, just him being an absolute idiot.

It's gross.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/11/2023 11:19

If its real.then it's sick. But so is kidnapping and murdering people from.their homes in Israel, or bombing civilians including children in Gaza.

Stomacharmeleon · 24/11/2023 11:25

@DysonSphere so it's 'triggering' and 'shocking' but you don't know what it says?

DysonSphere · 24/11/2023 11:37

Stomacharmeleon · 24/11/2023 11:25

@DysonSphere so it's 'triggering' and 'shocking' but you don't know what it says?

People were saying it's a birthday message to a child.

I came here to see if it is true or a lie instead of jumping to conclusions, since there's a lot of stuff online that isn't what it says it is.

The poster above has kindly said confirmed it as real. Though I think a more appropriate question would have been is it fake?

I find it abhorrent. War may be war. But gratuitous enjoyment or gloating at anothers demise is - I don't know somehow more twisted? Sick? For me.

Trigger warning is to others, because this is MN and sensitive images are usually accompanied with a TW.

I personally found it very upsetting and extremely disturbing. More so that it is true.

Adding that sort of malevolent wish to a bomb that is already going to kill, suffocate under rubble, burn alive, and maim people, won’t make the bomb worse, but will show up the nasty mind of the person who wrote it.

(If it is not planted propaganda to make Israel look uncivilised.) It certainly does Israel no favours.

Stomacharmeleon · 24/11/2023 11:40

@DysonSphere you did jump to conclusions... never heard of the Enola Gay?

crumpet · 24/11/2023 11:43

It’s been happening for a long time. Here’s just one example https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/08/17/ukraine-russia-bombs-slogans-fundraising/

Nope

Humdingerydoo · 24/11/2023 11:45

I hope you don't mean I was the one who confirmed it was real! I have no idea. I haven't seen it before. I just translated the text for you. I have no idea if the picture is real or not, but if it is I stand by my verdict of it being gross.

Thanks for context, although unfortunately the article is behind a paywall. I see it's not an unusual thing!!

I believe that hand written messages on bombs and missiles is normal practice in war.

basculin · 24/11/2023 11:54

Writing messages on bombs has being going on pretty much as long as there's been bombs.

DysonSphere · 24/11/2023 12:01

Blimey😧

Alright I am clearly naive to the deep levels of.. I wouldn't say depravity... callous detachment maybe? In war.

OP posts:
Stomacharmeleon · 24/11/2023 12:04

@DysonSphere I imagine 'callous detachment' is pretty much key to be involved or serving in a war.

ScrollingLeaves · 24/11/2023 12:05

Stomacharmeleon · Today 11:40

DysonSphere you did jump to conclusions... never heard of the Enola Gay?

What conclusions? That bombing people is nasty, and using the already horrific killing as a personal greeting /celebration seems unfathomably depraved coming from a member of a powerful, modern State?

Writing that message - when everyone already knows thousands of civilians are being killed by Israeli bombs - is the slick equivalent of the Palestinian crowd’s primitive and monstrous cheering and spitting at the naked girl in the back of the pick-up on Oct 7.

megletthesecond · 24/11/2023 12:09

War is always sick and depraved. Think low, groups of violent armed men will go far lower than that.

Stomacharmeleon · 24/11/2023 12:10

@ScrollingLeaves it absolutely is not.

Wow. How do you even sleep at night. You think this is ok?

Stomacharmeleon · 24/11/2023 12:15

As has been already said this is normal war time behaviour and has happened in all major conflicts going back to the world wars. It is normal for soldiers to name rockets, planes, ships etc.

Pinkpinkpink15 · 24/11/2023 12:16

@DysonSphere

it's sick, but it's been going on for as long as war has.

be grateful if that's the worst thing you see during this conflict.
