Hi everyone,

Me and my husband have made the decision to try for a baby - we had a talk last month after I thought I might be pregnant (we weren't actively trying) and after 12 years together feel that now is the right time.

I'm feeling really excited and a little nervous - I know it may take a while and I just want to be as prepared as possible and be doing as many of the right things as I can.

What do people recommend for trying to get pregnant? Is anyone else in the same boat and would like to keep in touch/progress?

I'm due to finish AF in around 2 days and due to ovulate around 28th according to my tracker app - I've got folic acid and vitamin D arriving tomorrow that I can start taking, what else can I be doing to prepare as much as possible? I know it sounds silly, but do we just start 'trying' as soon as my period is over?

Look forward to speaking to you all soon!

Thanks,

Bee x

@Rocky89 couldn't tag you again, message above x

MintGreenLife · 22/05/2020 11:17

@Daffodil21 ah that's frustrating, but at least you have it on hand to help :) we were going to DTT everyday during fertile window, that's if I actually work out when it is as don't want to just go on what my app says, and I figured it might be good to have some in the house just in case we need a helping hand ha. Aw we all know what you mean though, as sure all of us have experienced similar. Oh gosh yep I read that. I think I'll have to brief my fiancé and get him to turn around while I sort it urgh. That's a good tip though, I might do the same and keep it in our spare room, although if you do it 15mins before I would have thought it might drip out a bit...urgh.

Ah that's so interesting about needing to pee more. I feel like I'll end up thinking that's a symptom even though I'm someone who needs to pee pretty much every hour already, i've always had to get up in the night at least a couple of times all my life meh. I might look at that other book you mentioned by the way, I really loved the impatient woman's guide, feel like I want to read another and everything else looks a bit too informative over entertaining... x

Daffodil21 · 22/05/2020 11:38

@MintGreenLife yeah we've DTD every other day, but then every day in the fertile window this is month (ovulating today, or close to today anyway). We'll keep going for a few extra days just in case. Which app do you use? Sorry if you said it in an earlier post.

It's easy to put in, but I feel like him knowing I'm putting it in is basically saying 'we're having sex in the next 15 mins' so would definitely recommend the spare room! I usually go in the bathroom after and just wipe a little away...😳 it doesn't actually drop out surprisingly. He will be able to tell you've used it though if you get what I mean 😂

I share your inconvenience with the peeing thing. I'm almost every hour too - it was when it was becoming every half hour that I thought something was up! I'm actually wondering if it's a symptom of PCOS? Who knows!

MintGreenLife · 22/05/2020 11:43

@Daffodil21 no probs, I think I've probably asked you several questions that you've already answered ha. I use the Premom app mostly and chart my OPKs and CM on there. I started with the glow app and still have that, but I use Premom a lot more. How about you?

That's good to know that it's easy to use and doesn't come out too much, blurgh. I may give it a go this weekend.

According to my mum I was the same a child/baby, so with me I know peeing regularly is just what I'm like. I'm only 5 foot so I put it down to having a small bladder and drinking too much water ha. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about with you :) x

Peach1204 · 22/05/2020 11:43

Sorry ladies! Think I talked a lot so lots of catch up on!

@raspberrytupee welcome to the group! Fingers crossed for your job applications. Not sure if you're aware or bothered but some places won't pay mat pay if you haven't been there a certain amount of weeks before your due date (note it's due date and not birth date - my colleague missed out by 2 days!)
Similar situation as you. Always wanted to do another big holiday before but that would mean at least another year so we decided September and to do trips before then but then Covid happened so we thought start now. Xxx

Peach1204 · 22/05/2020 11:47

@vil10 ahh ok. I take mine at the same time so should be having the same effect then. I would like to surprise him too. My side of the family it would be first grandchild (unless my brother does it first) then OHs side it would be 4th (again unless a sibling surprises us!). We have thought of a few different ways to tell people. It's hard sometimes to get everyone altogether so hoping to do it on a special occasion like Christmas or one of our birthdays. Xxx

Peach1204 · 22/05/2020 11:49

@rocky89 fingers crossed for you! Xxx

Peach1204 · 22/05/2020 11:51

@BeeR2009 Hi B! Just wanted to say hope I haven't taken over your post with all my chatting! How are you doing since last on? Xxx

Rocky89 · 22/05/2020 11:58

@Peach1204 do you know I was literally about to come.on to say the same thing! It suddenly dawned on me! Sorry @BeeR2009! How are you getting on?

Daffodil21 · 22/05/2020 12:01

@MintGreenLife it's definitely worth using, it definitely improves things for us, so even if it doesn't do what it says, at least it helped in other ways!

I use Flo. I've read some negative reviews on here because it gives you a longer fertile window, but I just take it with a pinch of salt and if I want to know for sure I use OPKs as well. They do tie in with each other and it has definitely learned my cycle length, even though it's 36 days (but varies a bit). It's accurate even after 2 pregnancies and no period for 72 days after second MC so I wouldn't use anything else. I don't rely on it for ovulation day though, I use it mainly to know when I should expect my period and then I add a day or so for the day I tell myself I'm going to test from (ha). I add a few days around the fertile window just to cover all bases if I haven't used an OPK, but generally if you DTD every 2 days you should have covered it. I feel like I'm in no position to give out advice as I don't actually have a child... but I have conceived twice and actually when I did I had ditched the OPKs, didn't try and time anything and just DTD every two days!

Yeah I'm not worried about the frequent peeing thing, it's just annoying!!

Where are you in your cycle?

notyetamumbuttrying · 22/05/2020 12:20

Hi thought I'd join as it's our first ttc as well. We've been trying 9 months now and never received a bfp. I'm 34, husband is 37, both will be our first. We both take our prenatal vitamins and lead relatively healthy lives although Dh has decided to start smoking again during lockdown 🙄 so he needs to kick that as I go into fw this week. I could do with some losing some weight but then I know so many ppl bigger than me that have had success! Suppose I should just do it for me tho as I have put on a stone and a half since my wedding in August 😬

Peach1204 · 22/05/2020 12:24

@Daffodil21 no judging here. Tbh if we've had no luck by the end of the year we are going to the dr in the new year. I think they will tell me to lose weight which I am doing but know of people bigger than me who have had children. Xxx

Peach1204 · 22/05/2020 12:26

@notyetamumbuttrying welcome! I'm with you on the weight front, I've put loads on since I met my OH 7.5 years ago! Like you said plenty of larger ladies manage to get pregnant so it isn't unlikely but if it doesn't happen I know the drs will tell me to lose weight. Fingers crossed on your journey to being a mummy! Xxx

notyetamumbuttrying · 22/05/2020 12:32

Thanks @Peach1204 after months of trying I'm getting to the panicked stage now and rang the doctors this week. She won't touch us until 12 months of ttc as I only turned 34 in March. How long have you been ttc?

Peach1204 · 22/05/2020 12:51

@notyetamumbuttrying I came off the pill at the end of March after being on one form of pill or another for 11 years. Believe I've had my withdrawal bleed then AF came and 28 days later came again so fingers crossed it's all synced and that's my cycle. If nothing happens this year I'd be hoping to see the drs in the new year (I was given a year supply of my pill in October last year so could have stopped it at any point from then). Does age play a factor into when they would refer you? I've just turned 31. Xxx

MintGreenLife · 22/05/2020 13:00

@Daffodil21 awesome, thanks for the tip :) it's actually just arrived from Amazon, so maybe we will try later!

I've started using OPKs this month, more just to help me get to grips with my cycle after coming off the pill. I'm CD11 today and am feeling excited about the fact that my app says I'm now in my fertile week, even though it's probably not right anyway ha. Well you're far more qualified to be giving out advice than I am, given that I've only been learning about all this for a couple of weeks! So far we've been DTD every other day, so maybe using OPKs isn't necessary, but for now I'm enjoying learning so will carry on unless they start to stress me out :)

Vil10 · 22/05/2020 13:07

@MintGreenLife yesss I thought I recognised the name! Thankyou, I’ve just tested again and got the strongest line I’ve had, it’s a lot darker than the control line, I know it isn’t much to be happy and excited about but I really am! Don’t worry you’ll get that surge, just keep on testing!! I started testing on CD7 and got my highs on CD15 and today CD16! I think my cycle should be regular now, usually your af arrives 10-16 days after ovulation so hoping I’m back to normal! I suppose If my next af was going to be later my ovulation wouldn’t be now!x

Vil10 · 22/05/2020 13:08

@Peach1204 that’s exactly what we thought! We’d like to tell everyone together!x
@notyetamumbuttrying welcome!!

Rocky89 · 22/05/2020 13:15

@Peach1204 everywhere I've read says aged upto 35 you go to doc if you've been trying for 12 months with no success, 35+ you go to doc if yove been trying 6 months

notyetamumbuttrying · 22/05/2020 13:18

@Peach1204 yeah it does. If under 35 you have to wait one year, if over then it's 6. I thought as I was on the cusp they'd see me but nah. Hopefully you catch soon lovely 😊

notyetamumbuttrying · 22/05/2020 13:19

6 months that should have ended with @Peach1204*
Thanks for the welcome @Vil10 🤗

Poppyismyfavourite · 22/05/2020 13:24

Hi ladies, I missed the start of this thread but can I join you? We decided to start trying just over a month ago (when we both passed our probation periods for new jobs!), been married nearly 1.5yrs, but together 8.5!
I reckon (although I'm mostly guessing at the moment) I'm ovulating around now, so we are doing it every other day for about a week! 2 down 2 to go!

Poppyismyfavourite · 22/05/2020 13:25

I'm 29 and DH is 30 btw.
has anyone else not detected an LH surge? I'm testing every day but not got it yet??

MintGreenLife · 22/05/2020 13:29

@Vil10 that's awesome! Did your OPKs gradually get darker, or just all of a sudden? I've always had a line on mine but always very faint. Kinda hoping to start to see them get darker, but maybe it'll just be all of a sudden. I'm only CD11 today, last month I'm pretty sure I ovulated late (around day 23) and got AF 7 days later. I wasn't using OPKs and we weren't TTC then as I wanted to get my first natural AF after coming off the pill first. Hoping I ovulate sooner this cycle and have a longer luteal phase. I've read that that can happen in your first cycle or two after coming off the pill so seems quite normal, but really hoping this one is better :)

How often are you testing now? And if you're doing it more than once a day when did you start to increase? I really want to try and catch my surge, but also don't want to start using multiple OPKs a day necessarily ha x

MintGreenLife · 22/05/2020 13:33

@Poppyismyfavourite hi :) I haven't detected a surge yet but I only started testing about 7 days ago on CD6 or something along those lines. I'm not expecting to get one for at least another few days. I'm the same as you and we only actively started trying about a week ago after AF, after making the decision about two weeks ago. What makes you think you might be ovulating now? Are you tracking CM also? x
