Does anyone else buy themselves presents for Christmas?

I've found that over the last few years I've taken to slipping a few treats away for myself. Its not that I don't get anything at all, but it tends to be a couple of small practical bits. Does anyone do the same either because no one else is buying for you, or just because? So far this year I have some lounge wear and a magazine subscription starting in January - I can't be the only one and if so what have you got?

Yes, I’ve bought a book for myself

MerlinsButler · 05/12/2025 23:44

Absolutely. I wrap them throughout the year and put them away so I’m semi surprised. I also buy myself present from our pets.

That’s brilliant, I’m certain my cat would love to buy me a few bits.

cucumberpeach · 05/12/2025 23:58

Not officially but I lessen my restraint around this time of year which tends to lead to a fair few purchases for self 😅

haveaword · 06/12/2025 00:05

Yes!

I do a stocking form myself too!

But isn't this just buying yourself stuff? What's Christmas got to do with it?

I buy myself things when I want or need them and when I see them at a good price. If I buy myself some posh shampoo or Lego when I see it on a deal in October I use it straight away. I don't wrap it up, hide it, put it under the tree to open on Christmas day in pretence that it's a Christmas present to me from me.

We’re all different. For me it’s more exciting if I have to wait for it and get it at Christmas. Also I don’t often buy myself stuff, because I feel guilty about spending money on more frivolous things. At Christmas I give myself permission to get a couple of things I want just because.
I give them to dh or the kids to wrap for me though.

Yes, I do too (usually chocolates and a book and anything else I fancy). 😃

doglikescheeseontoast · 07/12/2025 07:13

This is genius! I am 58, why has this never occurred to me?!

It's never too late to start a new tradition Grin

happytobemrsg · 07/12/2025 08:54

Absolutely! This year I’ve bought myself a new Oodie dressing gown & new slippers. Going to pop them on Christmas morning. Can’t wait!

Nonameagain31 · 07/12/2025 09:14

I just did a relaxing night in bag for my bday (new pjs, fluffy socks, bath bomb and book) and it was great so defo doing something for Xmas! Going to use up my boots points and maybe get a new dressing gown too

TableLegs001 · 07/12/2025 09:36

I sure do, OP! I will buy a book and some chocolates for myself to start and who knows from there.

LoudMoose · 07/12/2025 11:52

I started buying my own gifts 3/4 years ago, I even wrap them and put them under the tree to open. It’s probably a sad reflection of the state of our relationship. Husband always got me rubbish - I could usually tell what shop was still open on Xmas eve by his gift selection. One year was WH Smith and I ended up with random stationary and chocolate. I openly ask for specific gifts and somehow he still gets it wrong….can I get Take That reunion tour tickets? He got me Snow Patrol in a city 80 miles away on a week day. I don’t even know where he plucked that from. So now I buy my own gifts, get what I want. This year I’m getting Botox.

starfishmummy · 07/12/2025 12:35

I always get myself a christmas book in case no one else does!!

Gymbunny2025 · 07/12/2025 12:59

Me. I but stuff I want and give to DH to get the kids to wrap for me as a surprise 😂

caringcarer · 07/12/2025 13:36

My DH is actually a thoughtful gift buyer and gets me good gifts but as a PP said since my Mum died I get myself something DH would never think of. Mum used to make me a stocking and put all my favourite bits in there. DH does make me a stocking and it's lovely but it's mostly slightly bigger things and not the little bits my Mum got me so my favourite hand made rose petal soap, fudge, Xmas bling broach. I think buying the little bits Mum would have bought me brings her closer to me at Xmas. I just wrap them and pop them into my stocking with things DH has put in there for me. My adult DC also sometimes pop something into my stocking as well as my main gift under the tree too.

SardinesOnGingerbread · 07/12/2025 13:43

Hell yeah, I love getting exactly what I want 😁

TheFoxylady · 07/12/2025 15:41

I always do this..but myself a couple of things and wrap them up to myself from Santa ..if i do it early enough in the year I forget what I bought so its a nice suprise 🤣🤣

Sheeppig · 17/12/2025 18:31

Yes! I buy myself a pair of really nice pyjamas. I love traditional ones in a really soft cotton or flannel. Last year they were from the White Company, this year they are from Toast. Nobody else would buy me ones as nice as these so its my annual treat to myself.

MzGG · 17/12/2025 18:49

I already responded to this thread saying I bought myself a book. I’ve also ordered two blu ray steelbooks, which I’ve been coveting!

LikeMyHeartIsAboutToStopBeating · 17/12/2025 18:52

I do a stocking for myself. Lately DD has taken to adding to it but I usually have a book, a couple of miniatures and a box of chocolates. This year I’ve got an eye mask and some socks too.

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 05/12/2025 07:01

Sort of. I save all the money from Top Cash Back and my Boots points cards and then sit on Christmas Day evening with a cocktail and buy myself things in the sales for “free”.

I’ve got about £250 to spend this year

I think this is a brilliant idea

m1sschanandlerbong · 17/12/2025 19:57

Yes! I’ve only been doing this the last few years but I love it. This year I’ve treated myself to some new boots, a book, some fluffy socks and a bag. Last year I got a lovely new bracelet that I have worn loads all year as I chose so well! I don’t bother wrapping them and I don’t always tell anyone else about them but they’re my treat to myself

Serendipawtous · 17/12/2025 20:06

My local animal shelter does a "secret" tombola, whereby the prizes are wrapped - if I win anything at the Christmas Fayre, I save it for Christmas morning so I can have an extra surprise 😊

Fernticket · 17/12/2025 20:09

Knittedanimal · 05/12/2025 22:18

Yes. It's the most time i spend in shops all year, and now my lovely mum is gone, no one gets me much of anything. My mum was a big gift giver, do Dcs, DF and DH have lots of pressies, why shouldn't I?
Plus there's nothing to take back 😊

Similar situation to this. I buy one or two small things per month, wrap them up and put them away. I got the idea from a thread on Mumsnet a couple of years ago. Sure, I remember some of the things I bought, but not all of them. It's a bit of fun for Christmas.
