Does anyone else buy themselves presents for Christmas?

I've found that over the last few years I've taken to slipping a few treats away for myself. Its not that I don't get anything at all, but it tends to be a couple of small practical bits. Does anyone do the same either because no one else is buying for you, or just because? So far this year I have some lounge wear and a magazine subscription starting in January - I can't be the only one and if so what have you got?

For Christmas, for birthdays, because it’s a Tuesday… yes I do!
Others do buy for me but if I see something I like I buy it. Seems more sensible than saying oh I saw xyz in this shop, could you please get it for me for Christmas?

Missey85 · 05/12/2025 13:00

Yes 😊 it means I get what I want! 💕💕

thornbury · 05/12/2025 13:04

I love it when I draw my own name out of the Secret Santa pot 😅

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 05/12/2025 13:57

I’ve been a single mum for over a decade and when DD was young if I didn’t buy myself something, I’d get nothing. Now she’s a bit older she buys me small trinkets which I cherish but I always buy myself the big stuff I really want. Over the years I’ve had some lovely stuff. This year, I’ve had jewellery, a new coat and some fabulous new clothes.

sprigatito · 05/12/2025 14:02

I don’t, as I am lucky enough to have a DH who is brilliant at buying presents and has trained our adult sons the same way (don’t worry, he has plenty of other shortcomings) so I get spoilt rotten at Christmas. I get so fucking angry every year on MN at all the useless slovenly men who hurt their partners by making no effort. Nobody should have to buy their own Christmas presents. Those who prefer choosing their own gifts and are happy with that arrangement, more power to them, it’s fine.

Advocodo · 05/12/2025 14:07

All the time! Usually something small that I have bought for Xmas presents and think ‘I like that, will get it for me too’!!

Needmorelego · 05/12/2025 10:25

Because it makes Christmas fun 🤔

Also because it feels more of a treat if you wrap it up and put away for Xmas! I usually forget what I have bought so it makes it extra exciting!!

Loopylalalou · 05/12/2025 14:12

When the kids were small and money was tight I used to buy myself something small that I’d denied myself the rest of the year. Now I buy things all the time.

Scooby2024 · 05/12/2025 14:14

I tell husband not to bother getting me stuff and I'll just wrap my own.. 😂. I get exactly what I want.

Daisy12Maisie · 05/12/2025 14:16

As I have said on many threads things stress me out as I have too much stuff and too little space. So I have got myself a lovely gift that makes me happy. I have booked a 3 day break for me and my 2 teenagers for the Feb half term. It’s abroad but somewhere quite cheap as I don’t have much spare money. For Christmas amongst other things I’ve got them currency for the county we are going. The trip is not really a gift for them as it’s me that’s desperate to go away with them. It’s for me. I work hard all year and don’t spend a lot on myself. This is my little treat.

My partner will buy me a gift as well but he usually buys me a voucher for his favourite restaurant. I have given up now telling him about the places I would prefer to go. So I feel that is a gift for him really.

TeenToTwenties · 05/12/2025 14:19

Yes. In as much as there is a small box of stuff in our spare bedroom with presents I have bought for me to be given to me by someone else.
If I buy them early enough I forget what they are.

Oh I love this idea!

I buy a bunch of flowers for myself on my kids birthdays 🎂 🥳

Haven't ever bought myself xmas gift but this year I've got some Valentino perfume and some loreal mascara that I've talked myself out of buying last 2x I've been through duty free. Chucked it in the basket with the rest of my online gift shop.
OH was shocked I'd done it 😅 Im definitely more of an Avon bubble bath kinda gal!
He got the kids himself an Xbox last year so I thought why not 👍

sonjadog · 05/12/2025 14:21

Yes, I do. It is usually just me, my Mum and the dog. So I buy enough presents to make sure everyone has two things to open on Christmas morning. Although this year the dog is getting a new bed from both of us as he has expensive taste.

Clostument · 05/12/2025 14:26

I buy my own presents and get DH to wrap them. DH is thoughtful and bought gifts for me when we first dated, but they were never quite right and then once we were married I used to send him lists and links for the exact thing I wanted. Then I figured it's just quicker to buy for myself (it all comes out of joint finances). DH isn't very savvy with using things like cashback and voucher codes so the same thing would often cost more if he bought it.

I've not got around to buying myself anything this year though. I was going to get a piano for the house (for me and dds to use) but we need to find space for one and that isn't going to happen before Christmas!

PositiveLife · 05/12/2025 14:41

I buy myself bits for Xmas. I've always done it for stocking stuff but I started getting myself an actual present or two when I got divorced. Usually something I need like new slippers, new jumper for work or similar so not really 'extra' spending.
I sometimes put "from" a random person on the tag, like a celebrity or character from a TV show, and do similar for a couple of their presents. The kids thought it was funny so it's become a yearly thing.

DarkForces · 05/12/2025 18:34

Dh intercepted his Christmas present from me and the perfect draught machine is currently cooling its first keg. On the plus side I don't have to wrap it 😂

ToadRage · 05/12/2025 18:40

Only occasionally. My husband treated himself to a new recordplayer one Christmas. We probably can't afford it this year.

BartholemewTheCat · 05/12/2025 18:47

I do indeed! Single parent and DC too small to go out shopping for me, so I buy the things I want for myself. DC love it. The one year I didn’t do it they were so sad because I hadn’t had anything.

Heathotstuff · 05/12/2025 18:48

I need new boots so I am defo buying them for Christmas

Moonlightfrog · 05/12/2025 20:01

I buy myself a few things each year. This year I haven’t bought as much, just an item of clothing I really wanted and I do myself a stocking containing my favourite treats/chocolates/sweets and some nice socks. I am hoping to buy myself some new walking boots in the sales after Christmas.

I get a few gifts from others for Christmas but it’s often just token gifts rather than things I really want, so it’s nice to buy myself a few things.

EndorsingPRActice · 05/12/2025 21:59

I did for quite a few years in my mid / late 20s after a couple of years getting very few presents and none that I really liked. I remember buying my first smart handbag one year and a microwave another year, and also books I wanted. I still have the microwave, it’s from 1991! I stopped once my now DH started buying presents for me.

FastTurtle · 05/12/2025 22:13

That’s why they do 3 for 2 you can keep the free one.

Knittedanimal · 05/12/2025 22:18

Yes. It's the most time i spend in shops all year, and now my lovely mum is gone, no one gets me much of anything. My mum was a big gift giver, do Dcs, DF and DH have lots of pressies, why shouldn't I?
Plus there's nothing to take back 😊

Ladychatterly86 · 05/12/2025 23:12

No I don't buy myself anything. If I receive gifts then that's nice, but if I want something for me I buy it anyway. Christmas isn't really about loads of gifts to me; more about time with family etc and having fun playing games and having that extra time out of normal 'work' life and routine.

somethingnewandexciting · 05/12/2025 23:16

Yup, me! I don't usually get many presents - my friends are all single parents too so we tend to agree to just do presents for the kids. This year I got a heated throw we have used loads already (saves on heating!) and I got myself one of those lamps that heats candles as I worry if I light them I won't remember to blow them out, so I have loads collecting dust. This is a good solution for me!
