Does anyone else buy themselves presents for Christmas?

I've found that over the last few years I've taken to slipping a few treats away for myself. Its not that I don't get anything at all, but it tends to be a couple of small practical bits. Does anyone do the same either because no one else is buying for you, or just because? So far this year I have some lounge wear and a magazine subscription starting in January - I can't be the only one and if so what have you got?

I started doing that when I was a lone parent. The DCs were too little to realistically get something for me and god forbid my ex would have thought of doing something that altruistic. It's a habit I've kept up as I usually get a Christmas bonus from work so I'll use some of that for a little treat for myself and wrap it up.

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 05/12/2025 09:26

I’m always myself things on vinted every day is like Christmas for me!!

marmitegirl01 · 05/12/2025 09:34

Yup. To Mummy. Love from Mummy. Properly wrapped. Something frivolous I want, not need. Started when I became a single parent and kids too small to get anything for me. Kids older now and they’ve started doing it for themselves too. I think everyone should do it!

Mcdhotchoc · 05/12/2025 09:52

Yep. For the last decade.
I used to sit down in the evening of Xmas day and buy something I wanted but didn't get.
Now I just order something in advance. This year it's a picture. Cost about £100.

LunaTheCat · 05/12/2025 10:02

Yep.. about 2 weeks ago.. a beautiful pair earrings I have wanted for years and a new bottle perfume.

BoxingHares22 · 05/12/2025 10:05

OH and I stopped buying presents for each other years ago. The rest of the family do secret Santa, so everything I have I buy for myself. 😦

CoastalCalm · 05/12/2025 10:08

I treat myself all the time really , I have a list of little things that I’d like for Christmas and if anyone asks I send them it - usually DH will get them but this year I’ve asked him for a ninja slushie so we are doing fewer gifts. Anything that doesn’t appear I’ll buy myself after Christmas

Bjorkdidit · 05/12/2025 10:18

But isn't this just buying yourself stuff? What's Christmas got to do with it?

I buy myself things when I want or need them and when I see them at a good price. If I buy myself some posh shampoo or Lego when I see it on a deal in October I use it straight away. I don't wrap it up, hide it, put it under the tree to open on Christmas day in pretence that it's a Christmas present to me from me.

Because it makes Christmas fun 🤔

Sourisblanche · 05/12/2025 10:27

All the bloody timeSmile

This year I ordered a Jane Austen puzzle and a couple of Spode plates. I’ll get a few little surprises on Christmas Day but I prefer buying for others.

Because it’s nice to have some pleasant surprises on Christmas morning.

Not just at Xmas, all year round 😂

Well my memory is shocking but I think even I would be able to remember what is in the 'present' when I've bought and wrapped it myself.

I don't wrap mine up.
But with four children who need driving lessons /tutors/hobbies/clothes etc paying for it's nice to spend a bit on myself at Christmas time.

It is, but I don't really do it the rest of the year. Generally things are a bit tight, and for whatever reason I feel like Christmas gives me 'permission' to treat myself.

Shrug. I don’t.

Ordering through the year, and I don’t open the parcels when they arrive, just toss into a box in my storage area. By the time I haul the box out a few days before Christmas, I have little recollection of what’s in there.

prettydesertflower · 05/12/2025 11:48

I do this every year. And for my birthday too.

IsThisLifeNow · 05/12/2025 11:50

Yes I do, kids are still young and I get a stocking just like them. I am in the middle of a separation, but even before that I'd buy little things for my stocking, used to do his as well as he never would. Ends up mostly being little bits of food and drink, maybe a trinket dish or something.

Plus this year I am expecting very few presents, some sweets from the kids as normal and something from my parents and that will be it since I have no one else. I am however filling up a box of new house items. So if I see any nice homeware stuff that I will need to buy new anyway for use in my new house, if mine ever actually sells that is, I've been stashing it away.

stclementine · 05/12/2025 11:53

God yes! I have no partner and my dad and the only brother I’m in contact with are shit present buyers. I work my arse off sorting their lives out so I deserve some treats - so I buy them 😊. So far I’ve got myself a nice king black dress, earrings and perfume.

FruitBadger · 05/12/2025 11:53

Yes! I'm a single parent, DS are 7 & 11 so they get a stocking from Santa. I've done myself a stocking each year since I've been on my own too and it's bloody brilliant 👏 Nice shower gel, new gloves, a good book, lovely candle. Santa nails it!

Mix56 · 05/12/2025 11:57

Haha Most if my married life I have had nothing from my H. (or just money🙄)
I bought myself a £4,500 watch a couple of years ago (2nd hand from certified dealer) told no-one !!!
It has now gained in value. (I spent money from my inheritance stash)
I will give it to Dd eventually.
Go Me !!!!

HeadyLamarr · 05/12/2025 11:59

I usually buy myself a book and wrap it when Waterstones do a double points weekend.

There's frequently a couple of months between wrapping it and Christmas so I usually forget what I picked and am pleasantly surprised.

HouseWithASeaView · 05/12/2025 12:10

For most of the year, if I see something I like, I am very sensible and think about something before I buy it. From early December though, I just flit about buying things I like and thinking to myself “MIL is bound to ask what I want for Christmas” or “it will probably be really inconvenient when it gets to it for me to take the DC shopping so much better if I already have options for them” or, even, “this will enhance my general peace of mind over Christmas and if I am happy everyone else will benefit from the joy and goodwill pouring out of me”. The one thing I do try and restrict are the treats as I have learned over the years that I have the sweetest tooth in the house and the least self control so, whilst I have bought with 8 people in mind (4 in our house plus 4 visitors for 3 nights over Xmas), 90% of it will be eaten by me which really isn’t good for my waistline

Tana433 · 05/12/2025 12:16

Yes, i usually save up a bit of money or gift cards and buy stuff in the Black Friday sales. To be honest this usually consists of books and loungewear but still, gifts are gifts right?!

HollyhockDays · 05/12/2025 12:55

I get myself new pyjamas. I’ve gone very fancy this year!! I generally get myself what I want when I want it anyway though.
