Does anyone else buy themselves presents for Christmas?

I've found that over the last few years I've taken to slipping a few treats away for myself. Its not that I don't get anything at all, but it tends to be a couple of small practical bits. Does anyone do the same either because no one else is buying for you, or just because? So far this year I have some lounge wear and a magazine subscription starting in January - I can't be the only one and if so what have you got?

I do this too, @Mumofoneandone. I buy what I want to receive and give it to DH to wrap and put under tree. I get the excitement of choosing the things I want, and more excitement when I open them on Christmas day!

caringcarer · 05/12/2025 00:11

Everyone sleeping at my house on Xmas Eve gets a stocking. DH puts things in my stocking and I do his but I sometimes pop a couple of bits in mine too on the grounds input more in his than he puts in mine. One thing I like to put in mine is fudge. I love it yet DH never seems to remember to get me some. I've also got myself a cat jigsaw puzzle where every piece is a picture of a cat. I will look suitably surprised when I open it in front of DH and foster sons.

InTheCludgie · 05/12/2025 06:31

Not usually, but DH and I have bought ourselves a Lego set to build together

Thedevilhasfinallycaughtupwithhim · 05/12/2025 07:01

Sort of. I save all the money from Top Cash Back and my Boots points cards and then sit on Christmas Day evening with a cocktail and buy myself things in the sales for “free”.

I’ve got about £250 to spend this year

Animatic · 05/12/2025 07:02

Yes! Same for birthday :)

But I’d be devastated if I had to buy my own Christmas presents because my husband couldn’t be bothered…

Zempy · 05/12/2025 07:04

Of course not! That would be crazy!

My pets buy my presents and wrap them and pop them under the tree. I understand deceased pets are also able to fulfill this function.

If all else fails, doesn’t your neighbours cat REALLY like you?

Natowl · 05/12/2025 07:12

Yes.
Last year I bought myself some earrings and cashmere socks and gave them to dh to give me. It would have pained him to pay for the cashmere socks (they were in Tk maxx so only about a tenner for two pairs) so I bought them to make sure I got them!

This year I saw some pyjamas I liked whilst doing the food shop in Tesco so bought those, I’ve also bought myself a candle and a bookmark. I think I’ve also bought myself a couple of other bits but I can’t remember now. I always do very well at Christmas 😂

bringonyourwreckingball · 05/12/2025 07:14

I do - single parent, the first year alone it was because I was starting chemo in January so bought myself some nice loungewear and books. But I realised that the kids feel better if I have a few things to open

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 05/12/2025 07:17

Yep. Me too and sometimes treats in the lead up to Christmas who wants Christmas smelling toiletries after Christmas, not me, let’s be using them now and all the candles and yummy chocolates!

DarkForces · 05/12/2025 07:20

I haven't bought anything to unwrap but I've treated myself to a Lego centrepiece for the dinner table and a couple of new outfits for Xmas day/ meet ups.

PersephoneParlormaid · 05/12/2025 07:22

I buy myself what I want because I know DH would still get the wrong thing, even if I wrote it down!

ACynicalDad · 05/12/2025 07:22

I often buy the kids presents to me, sometimes my wife and may parent’s ones too.

MeOldBamboo · 05/12/2025 07:25

Me too. Bought some makeup in Black Friday sales at John Lewis, a book that’s difficult to get hold of that no one would think to buy me. A choc orange because I buy them for everyone else then don’t end up with one!

EveryDayisFriday · 05/12/2025 07:27

Yes but I've posted this before and had posts claiming it's so sad that no one loves me enough to buy me gifts.

That's not strictly true, I've had lots of gifts over the years but a huge majority of those have not been things I like or use. I hate wasted money and effort on stuff for the sake of it. I'd rather those gift givers bought what they wanted instead. I get myself a few bits for Xmas and birthday. This year is a bit more low key as there's not much I want or need.

LossOfMarbles · 05/12/2025 07:32

Yep I Black Friday’d myself!

attichoarder · 05/12/2025 07:37

I buy my own Christmas present as my husband never buys Christmas presents and I wrap it up and then op b it if we are staying with relatives and they say things about he great he is! It’s such a farce!

Alongthetowpath · 05/12/2025 07:39

I sort of do. We always buy presents to everyone in the family“from” the dog and cat.

So I’ll tell DH for eg“the cat is buying me chocolates this year. Does she know which ones I like?”

And then he knows to go and buy them and wrap them (or say, actually, I don’t think she does know, you’d better tell her which ones).

The dog in particular is a very extravagant present buyer, whereas DH tends towards the practical, so it works well.

Isadora2007 · 05/12/2025 07:41

DH and I decided that we’d buy our own presents and open them together after years of trying to get each other things and not quite hitting the mark… I love books but he wouldn’t know which I’d already read and often buy me a double etc. So we have a modest budget. This year I’ve actually treated myself to £65 of Christmas village stuff so it’s out already but that’s my Xmas gift to myself so I’ve wrapped some books to open on Xmas day and still have around £20 to buy something else to wrap.

AgnesX · 05/12/2025 07:43

I've bought myself a cashmere cardigan. Its to wear over the Christmas period so I've rationalised it in my head and it was bought on black Friday.

I'm also thinking of some collection privee by Dior... not sure how I can rationalise that but it's nice to think about it!

CrotchetyQuaver · 05/12/2025 07:44

Yes I've always bought Christmas presents to myself. This year I'll probably buy myself more than usual as my DH died in May so it's not going to be an easy one

Dawninglory · 05/12/2025 07:44

I do, and also get myself a Birthday present too! Then at least I get something I really like/want/need! It was my birthday last month and I bought a vintage Mulberry bag 😆

hididdlyho · 05/12/2025 08:43

I like to buy a St Eval diffuser and candle in a winter scent each December. I don't think my DH cares either way, so it feels like a present to myself!

I've treated myself to a winter scene jigsaw and a couple of craft kits this year. I'm trying to not go too overboard with the booze, so hoping these will help keep me busy.

Highlighta · 05/12/2025 08:49

Yes, I do. Every year!

But I am single and it is just one dc and myself at home. Dc buys me something small with his pocket money. I do not have any family close, so it is just dc and me.

I never treat myself to things during the year, so mentally I think it is then something I have "allowed" to treat myself.

Most years I have bought myself a piece of Le Creuset and now have a nice collection from over the years. Just this week, I bought myself some perfume. I always make use of the Black Friday sales.

It is my gift to me.

(I don't wrap them, as I have usually used my LC by Christmas Day, but I might wrap my perfume this year).

mazedasamarchhare · 04/12/2025 22:58

Yes! Ever since my parents died as dh isn’t really into Christmas. I buy myself a couple of things in the January sales, wrap them up, put them away and then dig them out and put them under the tree, I’ve normally forgotten what it is, so I get a nice surprise, my kids think it’s hilarious that the label says to me from me!! It’s normally a book, something scented like posh soap / candle/ perfume etc and something practical (last year it was a poaching pan as dc love poached eggs!)

Same. I order things throughout the year and leave the parcels unopened; by Christmas I don’t remember what’s inside.
