Does anyone else buy themselves presents for Christmas?

I've found that over the last few years I've taken to slipping a few treats away for myself. Its not that I don't get anything at all, but it tends to be a couple of small practical bits. Does anyone do the same either because no one else is buying for you, or just because? So far this year I have some lounge wear and a magazine subscription starting in January - I can't be the only one and if so what have you got?

I've had a hell of a shit year at times! Some great parts too though, but I'm proud of myself for getting through it. So I've gone a bit mad with presents 'from santa' I deserve it!😆

Highlighta · 20/12/2025 14:11

I bought myself an unexpected present today. I wasn't out looking for something to get, but I stumbled upon it while looking for something else.
A silk pillowcase.

It was greatly reduced,
And, I have been looking about for one as my previous one was so worn out it was thrown out earlier this year.

And the bonus part is that it was in a set with an eye mask and a hair scrunchie. The latter I will not use, but will give that to my dd.

I think now I am not sure if I am more excited about the pillow case or the mask 😃

Let’s just say that as I am doing the majority of the present deciding, ordering and wrapping, and in some cases posting, I slip myself the odd gift in here and there, when I am ordering for other people.

In my mind it’s a wee tax on unseen labour! 😀

ParabolicCurve · 20/12/2025 19:04

I do and have done for years. It seems like a waste of money to buy gifts I haven't asked for or not quite what I would have chosen. I do the same for my birthday too.

I thought I was unusual in doing this but seems like I'm not alone!

AquaForce · 20/12/2025 19:23

I go to my favourite second hand book store every Christmas Eve to buy a few books for myself. I don't wrap them though. They also have a coffee shop with homemade cakes/scones, so of course I have to pop in there too😂

LunaTheCat · 21/12/2025 08:15

-some earrings I have been hankering for for years
-I lovely French candle
-a bottle perfume.

We’re all different. For me it’s more exciting if I have to wait for it and get it at Christmas. Also I don’t often buy myself stuff, because I feel guilty about spending money on more frivolous things. At Christmas I give myself permission to get a couple of things I want just because.
I give them to dh or the kids to wrap for me though.

This is fantastic 😍. I bought things starting end-November, and I'd forgotten what I'd bought when I was wrapping yesterday. This would totally work....I'd be genuinely surprised and delighted.

Lovingthelighterevenings · 21/12/2025 22:28

I did this for the first time yesterday. Having gone out to get presents for DHs family, I decided to buy myself something from White Company... The lovely lady wrapped it so nicely so now I've something under the tree.

Happilyobtuse · 21/12/2025 23:17

Yes, I started doing it a few years back to ensure I was not disappointed! 😂 My DH does buy me decent gifts but he is not a mind reader and therefore has no clue what I really want. So he will get me things like expensive handbags, perfume, jewellery but he won’t know which exact one I was hoping for. So to avoid disappointment I buy whatever I want and then whatever he gets is extra.

This year I have bought myself:
Look Fantastic Advent Calendar
Michael Kors back pack
Lounge wear from Next
Cosy socks from Pavers
Sketchers cosy slippers
Laneige Lip mask
L’oreal Elvive at home glossing set
Red Dress to wear on Christmas day

Dizzierblonde · 22/12/2025 05:46

Got myself a new laptop with a delay repay refund from Avanti plus a £50 voucher from work! Only had to put £30 towards the cost. Not wrapped but I've resisted opening it and it'll be my Christmas pressie to myself.

So me and OH don't really buy for each other anymore as we don't really need anything. However, after reading this thread, I'm going to pop out and buy a couple of stocking fillers for myself and will pick up a couple of things for OH aswell. Nothing major, but something we like and will definitely use. Yes, I'll know what mine are, but I won't open them till the big day. Thanks for this thread and the relevation. Would never of thought of doing this before 😊

BeaLola · 23/12/2025 19:31

I have added to my "gifts" by buying the cocktail selection from M&S, make up from Lisa Eldridge range, a craft kit and something else I've forgotten about .....

Surely that’s a communication issue? Send him links 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bjorkdidit · 24/12/2025 11:04

But if you're sending links it's not a gift, its just making buying your own stuff more complicated.

Hence why I don't see the point. Just buy your own stuff as and when you want it and exchange little token consumables like chocolate, alcohol, nuts, cheese, flowers or whatever little things you like on special occasions.

No stress, no waste and you still get to choose something for your loved one to open.

Needmorelego · 24/12/2025 13:20

@Bjorkdidit but some people can afford more than others.
My mum can afford to gift me things I wouldn't necessarily be able to afford to buy myself.
So not everyone can just "buy their own stuff".

Heathotstuff · 29/12/2025 10:50

Brought myself a Apple Watch

But its rare you're exchanging gifts where you end up benefiting financially like that.

Gifts between couples are paid for out of the same pot one way or another. People generally reciprocate with friends and other family members so more often than not, you spend X to end up with an item you don't really care for. Or you exchange links which I pointless.

Just because some adults have parents with more disposable income than them doesn't mean exchanging gifts with other adults is always a good use of time and money.

That is very true.
Everyone just essentially swapping £30 is a bit daft (especially if it is literally cash 😁)
If I am getting something fairly neutral as a gift (for example bubble bath) I do try to get it from a shop that I know the gift receiver wouldn't usually shop at - so even though it's something they could just buy themselves it's getting something slightly different to usual.
