The Christmas Bargain Thread No 2 - The one where it all went very fast

Posting on behalf of @Reastie as I'm guessing she's busy and the last thread was almost full.

This post is a work in process and if you have any links you’d like to share or would be good to add then please do let me know. The general consensus for the thread is to share any bargainous links, ideas and/or discount codes or information. No affiliate links (is that the right word?) And any referral links to the separate thread linked below. This is a warm, friendly, kind and cosy corner of mn filled with Christmas cookies and hot chocolate - let’s keep it that way!

If you have any referral links then please post on this thread <a class="break-all" href="https://_[[//https//www.mumsnet.com/talk/christmas/5212180-bargain-referrals-thread-7" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/christmas/5212180-bargain-referrals-thread-7 and share around the joy/referral perks.

@WhiskyandWater the cushion sounds great, do you have a link of where to get it?

WhiskyandWater · 15/09/2025 18:34

@Livinginacatdictatorship it’s from uk.stoov.com it’s really lovely and I can recommend.
ETA they are NOT bargainous but worth it

Photo blanket or photo cushion has gone down well for relative in a care home. Hankerchiefs, luxury toiletries, hot water bottle.
or something like a voucher if there’s a regular hairdresser or similar that attends the care home.

Can anyone help me please with gift ideas for elderly ladies in care homes? Both have rapidly failing eyesight, so can’t really do the things they used to enjoy (reading, knitting, embroidery). They have limited space in their rooms, so nicknacks are out. One is a relative, so will spend a bit more on her, the other is an old family friend (who I know is already swimming in too many toiletries). Totally stuck🤷‍♀️ Thank you for any assistance or genius ideas. I have both Christmas and late year birthdays for both of them to make it doubly difficult!

Also, thank you @Reastie for these threads. I got so much from them last year, and I’ve just rejoined now for more inspiration and bargains from everyone. Thanks.

We always do up a gift bag of goodies for our elderly aunt. She not very mobile so very restricted in what she can manage, we get her favourite coffee sachets, cakes, the little cordial squeeze bottles in various flavours she likes, Kit Kats because they are her favourite too. We’ve had to cut a lot of her sugary treats out but there is always some werthers. It’s all practical things she loves that she can manage without getting up. We don’t do a hamper as it’s just not practical and she likes reusing pretty gift bags.

We then add a little extra, a nice tree decoration, she likes old knitted ones or we do a picture one, usually it’s a picture of the DCs with her during a visit. A small piece of dolls house furniture, she still has the dolls house from when she was a child and likes new things, but we limit to one item a year because she has so much, but also because she can’t organise it like she use to. We use to do porcelain dolls but she has too many. Same as Christmas broaches, she wears a different one each day in December.

edited - I forgot to add, a great gift she got last year from someone else was a touch lamp, she always says how easy it is to put her lamp on at night now.

Today will be a good day to go real life shopping in M&S if you can, as much of their own-brand sale stock now has 70% off. This includes children's clothes and toys, and ladies and mens wear. There was even some lego.

If you have patience you can also shop online. At the moment the extra sale prices don't show until click on the item. Many things which come up in a search are not available. Searching by brand (I limited mine to the M&S brands) and type of item works, but not size.
If a colour comes up as "out of stock" when you click on it, then it probably is. If not, even though the little colour icon may be crossed out, it's worth trying the various variations of sub-size, eg length or cup size, as some things then appear as available.

Not Christmassy, but I managed to find some basic school trousers for £5.19 instead of £17.

The non-M&S brands don't seem to be cheaper on Tuesday than on Monday, but there were bargains then.

Just working through the posts. Lakeland do loads of stuff that work with battery packs.
blankets, great big hoody things, cushions. All sorts.
