The Christmas Bargain Thread No 2 - The one where it all went very fast

1000 replies

RainbowZebraWarrior · 05/09/2025 18:32

Posting on behalf of @Reastie as I'm guessing she's busy and the last thread was almost full.

This post is a work in process and if you have any links you’d like to share or would be good to add then please do let me know. The general consensus for the thread is to share any bargainous links, ideas and/or discount codes or information. No affiliate links (is that the right word?) And any referral links to the separate thread linked below. This is a warm, friendly, kind and cosy corner of mn filled with Christmas cookies and hot chocolate - let’s keep it that way!

If you have any referral links then please post on this thread <a class="break-all" href="https://_[[//https//www.mumsnet.com/talk/christmas/5212180-bargain-referrals-thread-7" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/christmas/5212180-bargain-referrals-thread-7 and share around the joy/referral perks.

I'm just the messenger, it's an official Reastie sequel.

I know. But we still usually fill the current thread even if the other is started early! Xmas Grin

I thought Reastie only started the 3rd thread early as she wasn't going to be on her devices later on.

Here4the · 15/09/2025 09:40

There's a discussion about thread filling every year that reliably ends with half the people wanting to fill it and the other half saying that we'd get through loads more threads if we started a new one when we're only on 900 posts. So far I've yet to see a consensus. Probably best to leave to @Reastie to decide as it's her thread (maybe something to note in the intro?).

The other go to discussions to watch out for are the referrals one (there's a separate thread), and when someone inevitably turns up with some snotty comments about how we're all materialistic capitalists who need to grow up and focus on real issues like the effects of the gentrification of quinoa on the Peruvian economy (which obviously is a serious issue but not totally relevant on a Christmas thread). That usually gets quite entertaining.

You forgot about the lost posters complaining about discussing Christmas too early!

Can anyone help me please with gift ideas for elderly ladies in care homes? Both have rapidly failing eyesight, so can’t really do the things they used to enjoy (reading, knitting, embroidery). They have limited space in their rooms, so nicknacks are out. One is a relative, so will spend a bit more on her, the other is an old family friend (who I know is already swimming in too many toiletries). Totally stuck🤷‍♀️ Thank you for any assistance or genius ideas. I have both Christmas and late year birthdays for both of them to make it doubly difficult!

Also, thank you @Reastie for these threads. I got so much from them last year, and I’ve just rejoined now for more inspiration and bargains from everyone. Thanks.

@PudgeJudy

Nice food things they can share with visitors, a digital radio, lamps, no-burn scented candles or diffusers, a visit from a manicurist

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 15/09/2025 11:21

@PudgeJudy The RNIB website has a shop section with ideas from large print calendars, e-readers, puzzles/games. The website is faffy but worth a browse (if the link doesn't work properly, go to main menu and search for shop)

https://shop.rnib.org.uk/search?q=shop&options%5Bprefix%5D=last

A talking watch and talking alarm clock have previously been well received gifts to an elderly relative. Also some massive playing cards and dominos went down well too for playing games with grandchildren.

Otherwise what about something cosy and tactile like a nice dressing gown, throw or woolly socks?

Can I just ask about the heated throws, you have to use them plugged in? Can you get a wireless version?

I don’t know about blankets but I have a heated cushion that was a gift a couple of years ago, you charge it up and then it’s portable. From Stoov and it’s lovely and snuggly to lean on.

There are loads on FB marketplace

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 15/09/2025 13:16

@PudgeJudy I buy for my elderly neighbour who has just gone into a home.
I’ve bought in the past:
Patterned scented drawer liners
Scented sachets for drawers/wardrobe
luxury hand wash for the ensuite
Packet of patterned tissues
Bag of mints
Vintage pattern shower cap (TKMaxx has pretty ones)
I’m aiming for luxury items for everyday use. So far this year I’ve picked up luxury air freshener for the en-suite/room. Floris £16 on Amazon.
Maybe also slippers
bed socks
tin of fancy biscuits
cashmere fingerless gloves (my elderly Mum loves hers)
box of mixed greetings cards with stamps
If mobile, then a hand made voucher promising to take her out for a meal somewhere

Joiedepotato · 15/09/2025 13:58

@Here4the thank you, I wasn't trying to start WW3 (especially in this usually lovely corner of mumsnet) just trying to be helpful.. Personally if I lose the threads, it can take me a while to find them again!

IlovePond · 15/09/2025 14:14

@PudgeJudy - do they have/can they use mobile phones/or tablets? If so, they might enjoy an Audible gift subscription, (depending on whether their eyesight is good enough to access the menu):

https://help.audible.co.uk/s/article/gift-a-membership?language=en_GB

I think the previous suggestions of fingerless gloves/wristwarmers -maybe also fluffy bed socks or a woolly wrap to wear in bed/sitting in a chair are good ideas.

Monthly flower deliveries might be nice, (assuming the care home staff would be able to deliver them to the right rooms/be ok with doing so).

Available from here:

https://www.freddiesflowers.com/brighten-your-home-vase?

They also might enjoy a nice throw/small blanket for use on the bed/chair - as long as this wouldn’t get lost in the communal laundry system.

"Thinking about Christmas? In January?!"
"I know, it's when we stock up on Spode."

@Joiedepotato no wars started here, far too busy eating the Christmas chocolate they've started putting out in m+s 🤣

Have a good look at the size of these...they're huge lol!

I’ve had it on Amazon at good price. I add to camelcamelcamel and just price watch.

Londonmummy66 · 15/09/2025 15:32

@PudgeJudy - M&S do some lovely orchids in glass hurricane lanterns - always well recieved and they often have some unusual colors.

For those with slim young gym bunnies to buy for TK Maxx had a lot of sweaty betty leggings at about 1/3 of the new price. Sadly none that would fit my massive posterior.

SENsupportplease · 15/09/2025 17:09

Warning do not buy from Breathingbuddy.co.uk
its a crappy product clearly sent straight from china. I didn’t do my due diligence but don’t want anyone else to be taken in
