Thread 4 - the one with our Guylian best before fate

It was a toughie to pick the thread title this time!
Thanks to @RainbowZebraWarrior for the title Xmas Grin For those interested, our fate is best before June of next year and the offer was regarding Guylian choices at B&M.

Greetings and welcome one and all to a friendly and joyful corner of mn - the Christmas bargain thread. Here, we share Christmas present purchases, ideas, links and discount codes, with the aim to spread the Christmas magic and joy and reduce the financial stress.

It's a very busy thread, so see the tips below for helping everything run smoothly and avoiding repetitions of Cookiegate etc al. It's a lovely, friendly bunch and I'm so grateful to each and every one of you for building such a warm, fuzzy and generous spot on mn. I know I've save so much over the years and am so grateful to all of you for sharing.

Pull up a sleigh and relax with a mulled wine and mince pie, for Christmas has nearly arrived!

@ me if you need anything or you want to let me know anything - the thread moves so fast I can't always keep up so this really helps

A few pointers to make everyone’s life easier and the thread be as useful as possible:

  • It’s handy to put in bold the bargains so they’re easy to spot
  • No affiliate links
  • No need to place mark or post messages of hello or thanks at the start of a new thread - use the ‘watch thread’ button
  • Be nice or leave

The current referral thread for sharing referral codes https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/christmas/4940918-4940918-bargain-referrals-thread-6 . Please use this rather than this page to share referral links to make the sharing fair.

To make clicks links, you set it up like this only without any spaces apart from between the website and the word(s) you’re writing: www.bargainsahoyeveryonecomehere.co.uk

Thanks @RainbowZebraWarrior for the instructions below.
To make something bold, put this star * either side of the word you want to bold (with no spaces in between)

So starhellostar would look like this.

hello

Obviously use the * not the word star

Some of the below is copied and pasted from previous years, so do @ me if the links don't work

Went to Aldi a little while ago, most of the '"big ticket" items were gone, there was only one birthday cake, some macaroons and a few small grocery sets left. No signs of the caterpillar cake or such like. I did get a wooden washing machine which I'm pleased with as my 2yo will very much enjoy putting dolly's clothes in it, and for £20 I think it was very good value. The aisles were still very busy with disappointed looking people though so can't imagine the carnage at opening time this morning

Absolute chaos! There were people fighting over a wooden microwave 🫣

I hope everyone who wanted anything from the Aldi event was successful in their searches!

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 10/10/2024 11:50

I went this morning very early and it was chaos but I got most of what I needed. There are many items that are currently delayed so I’m guessing more will be coming.

Sorry hope its ok to ask on here, l just after some advice I have picked up some dunelm tickets for gifts and one of them is a teenage girl who would like bath stuff and hygiene products, I'm covered on the bath stuff but I'm wondering on the hygiene? In my mind that's deodorant, toothpaste etc. I don't want to get it wrong I want to put her together something she will really like. If anyone could give me any ideas I would be really grateful.

I wonder if she means period pants? Uniqlo or modibodi are my go to but M&S are pretty good as well.

@Bumblebeesince19 @Annie1290 do you actually mean a Nespresso or a pod coffee machine or coffee machine in general? I've gone through some of the options below.

Just in case you mean coffee machine in general I would suggest Delonghi or Tassimo and get one that's compatible with standard pods as vertuo are a pain to get hold of. I bought one quite cheaply from Argos a few years back but they are always on offer including for £1 with a subscription. This is cheapest upfront but pods aren't cheap.

However, you could also go for a bean to cup machine in which case Delonghi is good too and often does deals on eBay with refurbished ones from I think AO. Sage is nice for the experience as there's one that does press a button coffee or massive faff coffee depending on what you fancy. I found some good deals in Currys but would suggest a great place to look and feel but avoid like the plague for buying because customer service is shocking if something goes wrong. This is more expensive upfront but you're not then tied to a specific brand of bean so cheaper in the long term.

For the true coffee conneiseur I've also been recommended a Rok coffee machine which looks beautiful and apparently makes lovely coffee but you'll also need to get a burr grinder, milk frother, and then increasingly complicated and pretentious accessories and beans because by that point great but increasingly inconvenient coffee has become part of his identity. There are some reduced on their site currently. The advantage to this is your DH is now the designated coffee maker because no one else will be allowed to touch it, and he'll probably take it in the eventual divorce because he now loves coffee more than you. You can then start your new life with a bean to cup machine.

Thanks. We actually have an old Tassimo that's just died, prompting the Nespresso talk. The Tassimo we have is exclusively Tassimo branded pods and I don't want that again because they're now expensive. I don't drink coffee and refuse to make it unless it's a pod or instant 😂 plus for ease as DH does most of the school runs in a hurry, he suggested a Nespresso.

Sounds like I either want a subscription to a Vertuo or a Original that I can buy generic pods for?

I have my eye on a Sage for DH's big birthday next December I think.

@mickandrorty dry shampoo is a big thing with teens

Dry shampoo is a great shout

I'd have said Shampoo, Soap, Deodorant (solid) and maybe a body spray. Toothpaste and floss, Hand wash or mini hand sanitiser. Also reusable facial wipe pads and a face wash / simple cleanser.

Sorry that was to @mickandrorty 's original question

AndSoFinally · 10/10/2024 11:59

I was going to go to Aldi this afternoon, I really wanted the wooden checkout station till thing for DS. I may not bother then!

Did anyone see them while they were there? Did they look any good?

Maybe a nice wash bag containing all the basics but nicer versions IYSWIM? shampoo/conditioner, face cleansers, face masks, deodorant, body sprays, lip balms, exfoliators. A little pamper package, really?

hby9628 · 10/10/2024 12:03

@mickandrorty I agree with a previous poster that I would think period pants for
hygiene products. Primark do some too which are meant to be good.

Your post makes me realise how lucky my teens are that they just get these items automatically.

I would also add body sprays & lip balms as they are popular with teens. Maybe a couple of face masks? Somewhere like homebargains would be good as they do lots of dupes of the big brand. Think they have a dupe or sol de janiero in there at the moment.

Not a bargain - but Christmas related. Can anyone recommend a good (free please) app to keep track of what I’ve bought present wise and for who ? I’ve tried two and I’ve found them hard work not easy to use and gone back to notebook and pen…..but I need to go with the times and give my head a wobble and get something that’s on my phone really (trying not to be a dinosaur 🦕 although I am probably more the shape of this one 🦖)

thanks

Santa’s bag is brilliant.

ItWasOnAStarryNight · 10/10/2024 12:12

"Sorry this isn’t christmassy but thought you would be the best people to ask! Where is the best/most reasonably priced place to buy flowers? Need for next day delivery."

I don't think you can beat Bloom and Wild personally. Never had a problem. MIL loves her gift subscription each Mother's Day and my little Christmas tree is in its third or fourth year now! I've put referral code over on referrals board

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 10/10/2024 12:14

@AndSoFinally
they had quite a few of them left when I went. It looked strong, sturdy and like a child would get lots of enjoyment out of it. It’s a bargain either way. Hope you manage to get it.

Delahot · 10/10/2024 12:14

I’ve been asked to gift something for coffee pod storage. Any suggestions please? X

Excellent idea for a coffee machine for in-laws, thank you! Having a look online now and bit confusing - with regards to the Nespresso, does anyone know the difference between the Vertuo Plus or Pop?

Qwerty21 · 10/10/2024 12:28

No doubt that caterpillar cakes will be vinted by now, at a far higher price. Grrr

weebarra · 10/10/2024 12:41

Our Aldi was packed this morning and I arrived at 8.10. They didn't have the pictured track thing for my niece so wonder if it's been delayed too? Does anyone know?
