The 2023 Poncetastic Christmas Thread

Welcome to the 2023 Poncetastic thread. With a nod to Fellatio (wherever she may be) at the stroke of midnight, let the poncing commence.

"OK, first of all, I know it's still September by we need to start this thread now because as you all know, having a truly Poncetastic Christmas involves precision planning, strategy, bravery, heroics, and frequently martyrdom.

So, if you, like me, actually want to make the next twelve weeks of your life a misery by hand-crafting your cards, finding a huge bucket for Nigella's turkey in brine, pickling pears, shrivelling oranges in a low oven for those rustic au naturel decorations, dragging half a holly bush back from the woods, and just generally being a smug annoying jobs worth ponce, join me on this thread.

Feel free to post photos of previous tree-trimming, cake icing or table centrepiece triumphs, discuss this year's bauble colour themes, debate the merits of Delia versus Gordon, road-test a selection of canapés and cocktails, (all in the line of duty) and link to lovely inspirational photos/craft ideas for a truly Poncetastic Christmas.

Warning: If your idea of a good Christmas involves Pizza, ITV, gravy granules or anything with 'Aunt Bessie’s' on the packet, this is not the thread for you".

Hello, hello! 🎅🏻 🎄

We are potentially moving before Christmas which means I may feel the need to be uber poncy in the new house!

I need to start planning my Christmas food so I know what ingredients I need. Xmas Grin

ThreeRingCircus · 24/09/2023 14:37

Hello all! Looking forward to this year's thread. I haven't been doing much poncing yet other than collection the ingredients together for this year's Christmas cake, which I'll be baking next weekend.

Lwrenagain · 24/09/2023 14:37

This might be the most exciting build up to Christmas I have ever had.

LadyHester · 24/09/2023 14:39

Placemarking as this Christmas I am doing literally no compulsory entertaining so for once will be able to enjoy some serious poncing. Hand-printed wrapping paper here we come!

SusanandSoams · 24/09/2023 15:25

So glad to see the annual poncing thread! I'm thinking about colour schemes for this year. I'm leaning toward doing Quality Street colours this year.

DollyParsons · 24/09/2023 15:27

Placemarking! Bring it on Smile

mynameiscalypso · 24/09/2023 15:29

I've started tentatively thinking about Christmas this weekend so I'm definitely game! Last year, we moved the week before Christmas and then went to stay with family so I basically have two years with of Christmas in one. We're also hosting family this time so I need to start thinking about food! I've already bought a Christmas magazine and just waiting for a peaceful hour to start going through it.

WinchSparkle80 · 24/09/2023 15:30

Genuinely smiling with joy, I love reading this thread even if slightly rubbish at the ponsification

PerspiringElizabeth · 24/09/2023 15:32

Ho Ho Hello! Will be kitchenless this Christmas and very dusty and chaotic in the run up but I am absolutely going to try and glitter this turd of a house ha!

I usually make a massive GBHouse filled with chocs, and a fancy xmas cake, chocolate salami etc etc but obvs will have to forego this year so am going to mega focus on decorating what of the house is decoratable, and things OUT of the house eg trips! Need to get organising!

MyBedIsMySpiritualHome · 24/09/2023 15:34

I am crap at poncing around at Christmas, but I love this thread!
all the festive feels.

DaisyWaldron · 24/09/2023 15:37

Oooh, I love a nice poncetastic Christmas, although I've gotten less wholesome now that the children are teenagers. I've ordered a Siberian Spruce tree to be delivered in mid-December have and booked tickets for some poncey Christmas concerts and Cathedral services.

Trumpton · 24/09/2023 16:21

Raspberry Gin and Blackberry Brandy are soaking.
Christmas pud is made. Cake ingredients are in online shopping trolley.
I went to a craft fair today. Ooooh!

NoWordForFluffy · 24/09/2023 16:25

I have 4 fruity vodkas underway (rhubarb, raspberry, gooseberry and rose hip), so I'm sorted for vodka for the rest of my natural life, as that's 4 litres there, plus I bought a litre of plain vodka too! 🤣🤣

I made mincemeat ages ago as well.

My current Christmassy project is cross stitch cards. I'm on the 4th out of 6 now. I need to get a move on as I really want to finish a bigger one for my mum.

delishdelosh · 24/09/2023 16:42

Oh so excited to see this thread. We have moved house this year to a medieval house full of beams and it is going to look amazing once I have Christmased it. Mulberry gin is brewing, teasels are drying and Nigel slater is out. Can’t wait!

50fedup · 24/09/2023 16:42

😀I’m up for a poncetastic Christmas.
Detailed decor plan for each room is finished. Basically a cut and paste of last years’ plan with a few poncetastic tweaks. Colour scheme is glass, greenery, white and gold.
Gorgeous new glass baubles and bells purchased from The White Company.
Christmas food spreadsheet started.
2023 Pinterest board already has lots of pins.
Keeping an eye of the long term forecast threads as hoping for a white Christmas- it’s not looking good 🙁

Lalanbaba · 24/09/2023 16:43

Ohh I love this thread.
For us will be partly at home partly abroad as we are travelling this year to family.
Usually will get a real tree, but not sure will do well a week on its own.
I have gins (marmalade, gingerbread and damson) and blackberry whisky soaking.
I want to make some dry orange garlands and collect some greenery, sticks for the mantelpiece. (Suggestions of how early do this?)
I want to make some gluten free treats to take with us as one family member is coeliac, so testing various recipes/brands. Any suggestions for gluten free flour/recipes?
I have some naturally gluten free, but want a good buttery biscuit one

ThreeRingCircus · 24/09/2023 17:05

COOK have their Christmas range online now so I'll be browsing that this evening and deciding what we'd like, then I'm working on eating out of the freezer for a week to try and make space for all of the Christmas stuff!

What's the Cook stuff like? I was going to go to M&S, as usual, but it looks a bit more interesting and I like that a lot of it is gluten free (we've got a coeliac in the family)

Same!!

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 24/09/2023 17:40

Ooh lovely! I don’t post much but I look forward to this every year! Going to dig out the 12 days of Christmas felt kit I bought, and will start to think of ideas for decorating the Christmas cake. I always do it in all-white (although last year had a gingerbread house on it!) so will dig out some previous photos to post on here! Happy poncing everyone! 🎅🏼

Redshoeblueshoe · 24/09/2023 17:46

Lalanbaba I have just got Gluten Free Christmas by Becky Excell from the library, I've only just started reading it, it really looks brilliant. It covers everything.

ElephantGrey101 · 24/09/2023 17:49

Joining as I really want to have a good Christmas this year as DD was very poorly in NICU. We are also planning a first birthday party for her. I might get the scented candles out later on.

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 24/09/2023 17:52

First bake of the season... Christmas cake 😋😋 fruits have been soaking for the last 6 months in port (prefer port to brandy) one down 4 more to go. My kitchen smelt delicious yesterday.

How utterly poncetastic!!!

I no longer make Christmas cake because only me and my diabetic parents like it.

I spotted some sloes the other day and wondered about some gin.

I have already commenced the annual "Christmas trees look so much nicer without tinsel on" argument with my husband. I have never won this argument, despite pointing out numerous beautiful classy Christmas trees and noting that they are distinctly tinsel free. Last year I bought a small potted one as my own personal tinsel less tree but sadly this has died and I may be too mean to replace it.
