Christmas Bargain Thread 1 - the one where my dad is 17

Thanks @snowmanshoes for the title!

Hello everyone, so nice to see you all. Pull up a chair, have a mince pie and a peppermint latte and share your Christmas bargains and ideas. In message two are the links and info from last year - if anyone has anything they'd like me to amend or add, please do tag me and I'll update.

A reminder not to post affiliate links in the thread but that MN do change amazon links shared by posters into MN affiliate links.

Please do watch the thread rather than post to mark place to make it easier for everyone to keep up and find relevant info.

A massive thank you to those who have contributed and/or run the prequel threads this year. I can't believe it's another year! I started these when DD was a baby and she's just gone into Year 8!

Does anyone have a bead spinner recommendation? A lot of the Amazon ones have rubbish reviews

Froppysue · 10/09/2023 18:13

I’m late joining this year, hope everyone is well and enjoying lots of bargains!

feel a bit weird joining now as my kids are older and not even any little nieces/nephews any more, but hopefully find some ideas for my older teens and adult.

my youngest is 14 and loves anime/manga/gaming, I usually have things ordered by now as a lot come from Japan/america so need to get my bum in year.. unfortunately not many bargains on her things.

does anyone remember the Japanese dagashi (?) boxes? We got one last year and although dd didn’t like most of it, she keeps going on about these particular chocolate strawberries that were in there. Does anyone know where to buy individual Japanese candy rather than a multi box? Kicking myself I didn’t get the name of them though. Thank you!

This year, I’m thinking of putting together a 90s Xmas present for my sister - lots of small bits and bobs which will take her back to her teens. Would appreciate any recommendations of items and also places to source them - looking as thrifty as possible. So far I have considered:

The revlon shampoo and conditioner which smells of flex from Home bargains (I bought this for myself recently and it’s so nice 😀)
A mood ring (prob ebay or vinted)
A blockbusters video thing (badge or bag from Etsy)
Bottle of exclamation perfume
90s sweets or chocolate?

Any other ideas? Would love some dewberry something or retro body shop or ??? How to wrap this sticking to the theme? Help!

Not sure if the link has been done correctly.
Ichiba is a Japanese supermarket type shop in westfields London, they seem to also have an online shop. You may find the choclate strawberries there.

What a lovely idea! I’d include:

Impulse body spray
Pink shrimp sweets or ‘cigarette’ sweets
Monster munch or space raiders crisps
Vimto
A music cassette tape? I’m sure charity shops might have one?
Big scrunchie and/or Alice band

I was in tkmaxx smelling candles for autumn and there was a dewberry one that I told DD everyone at school smelled like this 😆. A Benetton rucksack of head bag for presentation?

Waterstones yesterday had a board game (I think movie themed) that was in a blockbuster video case

Bowlfullofmush · 10/09/2023 18:38

You can get old magazines on eBay. What about a Smash hits or Just 17?

Body/hair glitter and one of those ridiculous oversized flower hair clips (if you can find one), failing that a black velvet scrunchie! How fabulous we all thought we looked 😆

WetFlump · 10/09/2023 19:12

Lego custom cars book Amazon, bricks, 10 rebuild car options, over 260 stickers and 48 pages reduced to £8 amazon

poostinkywink · 10/09/2023 19:14

Brill suggestions - thanks all.
Sweet cigarettes, scrunchies! Benetton, dewberry candle, magazine (I used to the Clothes Show magazine 😁) all fab ideas. I just thought it would be a bit different - end up buying things for the sake of it sometimes but I think she will like this and can reminisce.

WetFlump · 10/09/2023 19:17

@poostinkywink An inflatable backpack 😂
bath pearls
tamigotchi
throw away camera
rubber bangles
choker necklace stretchy thing

poostinkywink · 10/09/2023 19:21

My gift to this thread is that the Blockbuster game suggested by Cuwins is actually reduced on Amazon to a bargainous £5.99. It’s actually Blockbuster Returns but you don’t need to have the first game to play this one. I’ve just got it for my 90s gift but the reviews says it looks good for any film fans. Thanks Cuwins!

Bath pearls! Where do I get some of those from these days? Good calls there - especially the back pack 😂

I often reminisce at Christmas about body shop fuzzy peach and dewberry even original white musk. Wish they would bring them back I used to love smelling the perfumes in the big glass bottles with the rods. Also kiwi lip balm reminds me of late night Christmas shopping.

wish they would bring taboo and cast away back that would be best Christmas ever.

how about an alcopop - wkd original iron brew or hooch lemonade from home bargains.

NoWordForFluffy · 10/09/2023 19:27

Bath pearls are bloody lethal as they make the bath slippery! You can get them though, as I googled them recently!

poostinkywink · 10/09/2023 19:31

How could I forget! I need a bottle of Hooch or something. Thank you!

poostinkywink · 10/09/2023 19:32

Ive just been onto the body shop site and they don’t do fuzzy peach anymore 😱

CamdenLurker · 10/09/2023 19:32

Impulse have relaunched the o2 fragrance, savers are currently selling it for £1.00, smells exactly as I remember.

CamdenLurker · 10/09/2023 19:33

Sorry this was in reply to the post about putting together a 90’s inspired box.

autumnangel · 10/09/2023 19:34

@poostinkywink if you have Instagram you should check out kneedeepinthe90s so many things have popped up that I remember fondly.

Also a coffee shimmer or heather shimmer lipstick by Rimmel were the only 2 colours to wear in the 90's!
