70s Christmas

Hi.
DH and I are doing a 70s themed Christmas this year. We're ridiculously excited about it actually. Grin.

Now, I've been getting the decorations in bit by bit. No problems with vintage fairy lights, baubles, foil garlands, daft looking fairies etc. But I cannot seem to find a silver tinsel tree ANYWHERE.

And I really want one.

Am I too early in the year? Does anyone have any idea where I might find what I'm after? All I've been able to find is tiny 2ft ones. I want 5ft at LEAST.

VictoriaBun · 29/07/2019 22:11

Cheesy footballs and Orange and Lemon slices.
You also have to watch Jason and the Argonauts on the TV !

70sWitch · 29/07/2019 22:12

Hehe. Not heard of that but we are getting in the .... BABYCHAM. (don't judge.) and the Cinzano Bianco.
Oh gawd!

I know @70sWitch, if I saw the ones we had as a child I would buy some and be very happy.

70sWitch · 29/07/2019 22:14

Disfordarkchocolate

I know what you mean. There are some things I'd love to have again, but can't find them.

We used to use my Dads socks for stockings and didn't have many presents. How will your husband cope with that sort of thing? And watching The Wizard of Oz like he's only seen it 5 or 6 times?

Redshoeblueshoe · 29/07/2019 22:19

Purple flares [santa]. I might just join you

CherithPonsonby · 29/07/2019 22:20

You’ll have to work your butt off, running round after everyone all morning. After your excellent lunch, when you finally collapse in front of Gone with the Wind on the telly, your ghastly MIL will make a snide comment, causing you to strop off to your room for several hours.

Your husband will be too drunk to notice/care.

Happened in our house. Authentic ‘70s Xmas.

Lots of Lego too!

Disfordarkchocolate · 29/07/2019 22:23

A machine that dispenser tiny bars of Cadburys chocolate for 2p and a Mr Frosty machine and you would have had my perfect 70'sChristmas.

Don't forget to write out your Christmas tv timetable from the Radio Times so that you know when to switch channels (no VCR)

Loveislandaddict · 29/07/2019 22:29

Have you got paper streamers, which you must pin from one side of the ceiling to,the other, by pinning them up with drawing pins, and half risking your ligpfe, when putting them up.

tinsel trees

Some tinsel trees in The Range

GrassIsntGreener · 29/07/2019 22:32

Our garden centre was selling paper decorations last year, the ones that open out and hang from ceilings. Love them! Maybe you'll find something like those local to you.

ToEarlyForDecorations · 29/07/2019 22:33

Home made crackers (buy a kit set) HOme made decorations. Kit set again.

Get that funny electrical adaptor thing for the fairy lights because for some reason, it was not a standard plug.

Buy a fresh tree. Then, for reasons I never did understand, leave it on the patio for a few days before bringing it in the house to be decorated.

Crappy paper decorations and garlands. Buy a few packs of paper chain decorations to make yourself.

Home made Christmas pudding and cake. Put coins in the Christmas pudding. So that they are red hot and will burn your mouth when the pudding is served hot. Failing that, put old an old 1970's 5p piece in foil in the bottom of each pudding bowl and put a serving of Christmas pudding on that. Cuts down on the choke hazard/burn risk. (You can tell my Nana was a nurse !)

Small bottles of pre-mixed snowballs. Baby cham too.

Buy plenty of chocolate i.e. Quality Street, Toblerone, Maltesers to eat in the afternoon whilst playing Monopoly or risk or Sorry or Travel Go.

Tea will be at 5.30pm. Come on, where's your stamina ?

GrassIsntGreener · 29/07/2019 22:35

Amazon sell huge tins of quality street nearer to December.

Don't forget the Black Lace party party mega mix on vinyl.

It's technically 80s but fuck it.

NewName54321 · 29/07/2019 23:37

You want to start thinking about getting the spouts on in the next couple of weeks so they are nice and soft by the big day Smile

You'll need ham for tea. And pickles. Lots of pickles. You should aim to have enough food in to ensure you can survive until New Year without going to the shops, as they will be mostly shut until then, and/or a 3-day power-cut.

Are you going to turn the central heating off for the authentic frost-on-the-inside-of-the-windows experience as you get up in the morning?

MrsMoastyToasty · 29/07/2019 23:57

If I'm good may I have the following from father Christmas?
A Bunty annual
A girls world hairdressing head
A stylophone

70sWitch · 30/07/2019 10:15

Haha. Some cracking ideas here. And some I'm less keen on 🤤.

Mrs. If you're VERY good you shall have a Bunty AND a Misty annual 😀. I shall have a word with the big man.

Don't forget to keep your nylon nighties well away from the fire in the morning. For extra authenticity, switch all the radiators off the night before.Wink
