70s Christmas

Hi.
DH and I are doing a 70s themed Christmas this year. We're ridiculously excited about it actually. Grin.

Now, I've been getting the decorations in bit by bit. No problems with vintage fairy lights, baubles, foil garlands, daft looking fairies etc. But I cannot seem to find a silver tinsel tree ANYWHERE.

And I really want one.

Am I too early in the year? Does anyone have any idea where I might find what I'm after? All I've been able to find is tiny 2ft ones. I want 5ft at LEAST.

70sWitch · 07/08/2019 19:09

@Tigger83. Yes. That's a definite contender. Thank you. Shall run it past DH later.

70sWitch, yes some of the ones on eBay are quite expensive. I got most of mine from my parents who just keep decorations until they break. Part of the 70s theme for me is about wanting to create the same 70s Christmas atmosphere I was born into for my own DC. I’m still looking for the perfect silver tree, but have made do with a white tinsel one for the last 15 years.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/08/2019 07:20

We had a silver tree in the 70s / 80s; it was very threadbare by the time it was done with! 😂

We definitely had baubles like your recent delivery too, @70sWitch!

When you say foul garlands, do you mean the ceiling ones? Are you also getting the collapsible paper / foil decorations which went into each 'triangle' on the ceiling?

Can you still get those stocking selection 'boxes'? I think that was the only stocking we had (it was a long while ago!).

Definitely nuts you crack yourself and orange / lemon slices. After Eights potentially too. We were given a little port and lemon as kids too. Xmas Shock

You need weedy tinsel too, not the lovely bushy stuff you can get now!

ExpletiveDelighted · 08/08/2019 10:42

We had a silver tinsel tree too, wouldn't be surprised if it was still in my parents loft.

70sWitch · 08/08/2019 23:03

Yep. Ceiling garlands and snowflake, bell, ball and star to hang in the quadrants. Got all that Xmas Grin. Was quite surprised they still sell them.

Maybe they're making a comeback.

I have a tinsel tree you can have if you want Op

Jenasaurus · 08/08/2019 23:05

It’s 6ft and a nice tree but I’ve gone for a snowy green one this year so you can have my silver tinsel one if you like

NoWordForFluffy · 08/08/2019 23:14

I need photos when you're done decorating!

ElevenOhFive · 08/08/2019 23:19

I assume you’ll be getting snow-in-a-spray-can to do the corners of the windows?

Oh and these are king of the retro decoration for me 😍

Doryhunky · 08/08/2019 23:45

Where did you get your fairy lights from?

VittysCardigan · 08/08/2019 23:47

Don't forget cocktails...

jessicawessica · 08/08/2019 23:54

Lots of candles. If I remember rightly there were lots of power cuts in the 70s.

PeriComoToes · 09/08/2019 00:03

OMG brilliant idea. Place marking for December when I shall read this thread and live vicariously through you. I might have a babysham whilst I do it.

AlunWynsKnee · 09/08/2019 00:12

We used to have a real tree in the 70s. It was alive so was ceremonially dug up each year and brought indoors. We moved and the ground was too frozen to dig it up (apparently) so we greeted Xmas 1980 with a two floor green tinsel monstrosity.
My family Christmas is a 1970s one with better drinks :)

AlunWynsKnee · 09/08/2019 00:14

Two foot not two floor!!! The horror encapsulated in two feet sized up to two floors would have been grotesque. Shock

NewName54321 · 09/08/2019 00:44

You need a Round Robin letter to put in your Christmas cards. Hang the cards you receive on a bit of string around the living room walls. No Facebook or SMS greetings this year - everyone gets one of two designs from a box of 100 cards - a puppy with a Santa hat or a stage coach outside an inn covered in glittery snow.

Your DP can get you a giant padded card in a box from the tobacconist, a bag of Pick 'n' mix (from the supermarket since there‘s no Woollies) and some chrysanthemums from the garage. And maybe something bling-y from Argos.

goose1964 · 09/08/2019 01:06

I hope you have young children as you will need to make paper chains,. You also need to make streamers, you will need 2 colours of crepe paper, don't unroll it but cut it about 3cm horizontal cuts, then you need to pin the ends together and slowly let out the strips turning so you get a twist.

crumpet · 09/08/2019 01:32

Chitty Bang Bang, definitely Morecambe & Wise. Also chocolate stocking. celery in a jar and Stilton for later in the afternoon. Bowl of walnuts. Doilies.

Pannalash · 09/08/2019 02:22

Advent calendars with glitter on the front and pictures behind the doors not chocolare.

Seahorseshoe · 09/08/2019 02:26

eBay has loads of different silver trees.

Kobr · 09/08/2019 08:22

Blue Nun
Top deck shandy
Buy a vintage tin of quality street off eBay and attempt to fill it with 5 plastic modern tubs

70sWitch · 09/08/2019 10:15

Haha. So this got busy last night. Sorry I missed it. Went to bed with a migrajne.

I'll agree to most of this but NO BELLS WHISKY .
You have to draw the line somewhere.

Of COURSE there'll be pics when it's all up. I promise. Fb will be plastered too.😂

Seahorseshoe. I've been all over eBay. Can't find a one except in the States with horrendous shipping costs . As I said though, I may be too early.

Xmas Grin
